Happy 12th Birthday Katie!

Our peek-a-poo, Katie, is 12 years old today!  It was Bob's birthday in February 1999 and he wanted a lap dog.  We saw an ad in the paper for peek-a-poo's and drove to Jackson and picked her out of a litter of puppies.  We were trying to come up with a name for her after we got home and the next morning we were watching the Today Show on TV and decided to named her Katie after Katie Couric.  She has really been a good dog but is getting a little feeble now.  Wishing Katie a very Happy Birthday and we will get a special treat for her on her New Year's Eve Birthday!  (Picture taken June 2010)

Vicksburg On The Hunt

Vicksburg resident Dwayne Wyatt bagged this 12-point, 250-pound buck at Wyatt's Hunting Camp.  He took it down with a .30-06 rifle from a distance of 100 yards.

Vicksburg resident Zane Flaharty killed a pair of deer this season.  He got this 150-pounder while hunting with his grandfather, Steve Reed, near Long Lake.

Spencer Davis, 11, bagged this 115-pound spike buck on Thanksgiving morning in Bovina.  It was his first buck, and only the second time he had fired a gun.  He made the 70-yard shot with a .243 Marlin rifle.  Spencer is the son of Cary and Donald Davis of Monroe, LA., and the grandson of Gene and Francis Jowres of Vicksburg.

Seven-year-old Vicksburg resident Carter Magee took this 10-pointer for his first buck.  He shot the deer, his third of the season, with a .243 rifle from a distance of 80 yards while hunting on private land in Yazoo County on December 12.  Carter is the son of Kevin and Beth Magee of Vicksburg.

Chance Williams' first deer was this 6-pointer.  He shot it on private land in southern Warren County while hunting with his father, Chad, on November 6.

Layne Tedder, 13, shot this 11-point buck on November 25.  It had a 16-inch main beam and scored 143.25 Boone and Crockett points.  My congrats to all the young hunters and Dwayne with his very nice 12-point buck taken in our great wild outdoors!

Back Home From Virginia

Back home from a delightful visit with my youngest daughter, Suzi, youngest granddaughter, Emma and son-in-law, Dennis, in Fredericksburg, Virginia.  We all enjoyed a white Christmas and was also joined by Emma's other Grandmother, Maw Maw and Granddaddy Sheldon.  It was a week of fun and relaxation for all of us.  In my haste today, I forgot my camera in my daughter's car and as soon as I get my camera back will share some photos that I took of my Christmas vacation.

A Virginia Christmas!

My youngest daughter, Marian Suzanne, Suzi, last Christmas in Virginia!

I will be flying out of Mississippi this afternoon heading for Virginia to spend the Christmas holidays with my youngest daughter, Suzi, son-in-law, Dennis, and precious granddaughter, Emma, who is 3-1/2.  Also, driving up today from Louisiana is Dennis' Mom, Midge and step-father, Sheldon.  We all should have a great time spoiling little Emma and playing in the snow!  I'm looking forward to our visit since I don't see them but once a year.  Hopefully, in the near future, they will move closer to home...Alabama or Georgia.  I want to take this opportunity to wish all my deer blogging friends a very Merry Christmas and see you when I get back!    :)

Christmas Cheer

Last night we had some family members over for a delicious meal and wonderful visit.  We also invited my former husband, Jesse, who always has a Christmas Party and invites us, but this year he decided not to have one.  Here are a few pictures that I took of our family get-to-gether.  It was a joyful occasion to have my family with us before I leave tomorrow for my trip to Virginia to spend Christmas with my youngest daughter, Suzy, and her family.  My husband Bob will be staying home to spend Christmas with his son and family.

To my dear blogging friends ~ May your Christmas be filled with many, many blessings!

My granddaughter, Victoria, with Jamie and my great grandson, Ina.

Left to right, daughter, Debra Ann, myself, former husband, Jesse and daughter Kathleen.

True Story

A man named Bob May, depressed and brokenhearted, stared out his drafty apartment window into the chilling December night.

His 4-year-old daughter Barbara sat on his lap quietly sobbing. Bob's wife, Evelyn, was dying of cancer Little Barbara couldn't understand why her mommy could never come home. Barbara looked up into her dad's eyes and asked, "Why isn't Mommy just like everybody else's Mommy?" Bob's jaw tightened and his eyes welled with tears. Her question brought waves of grief, but also of anger. It had been the story of Bob's life. Life always had to be different for Bob.

Small when he was a kid, Bob was often bullied by other boys. He was too little at the time to compete in sports. He was often called names he'd rather not remember. From childhood, Bob was different and never seemed to fit in. Bob did complete college, married his loving wife and was grateful to get his job as a copywriter at Montgomery Ward during the Great Depression. Then he was blessed with his little girl. But it was all short-lived. Evelyn's bout with cancer stripped them of all their savings and now Bob and his daughter were forced to live in a two-room apartment in the Chicago slums. Evelyn died just days before Christmas in 1938.

Bob struggled to give hope to his child, for whom he couldn't even afford to buy a Christmas gift. But if he couldn't buy a gift, he was determined to make one - a storybook! Bob had created an animal character in his own mind and told the animal's story to little Barbara to give her comfort and hope. Again and again Bob told the story, embellishing it more with each telling. Who was the character? What was the story all about? The story Bob May created was his own autobiography in fable form. The character he created was a misfit outcast like he was. The name of the character? A little reindeer named Rudolph, with a big shiny nose. Bob finished the book just in time to give it to his little girl on Christmas Day. But the story doesn't end there.

The general manager of Montgomery Ward caught wind of the little storybook and offered Bob May a nominal fee to purchase the rights to print the book. Wards went on to print,_ Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer_ and distribute it to children visiting Santa Claus in their stores. By 1946 Wards had printed and distributed more than six million copies of Rudolph. That same year, a major publisher wanted to purchase the rights from Wards to print an updated version of the book.

In an unprecedented gesture of kindness, the CEO of Wards returned all rights back to Bob May. The book became a best seller. Many toy and marketing deals followed and Bob May, now remarried with a growing family, became wealthy from the story he created to comfort his grieving daughter. But the story doesn't end there either.

Bob's brother-in-law, Johnny Mark's, made a song adaptation to Rudolph. Though the song was turned down by such popular vocalists as Bing Crosby and Dinah Shore, it was recorded by the singing cowboy, Gene Autry. "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was released in 1949 and became a phenomenal success, selling more records than any other Christmas song, with the exception of "White Christmas."

The gift of love that Bob May created for his daughter so long ago kept on returning back to bless him again and again. And Bob May learned the lesson, just like his dear friend Rudolph, that being different isn't so bad. In fact, being different can be a blessing.

Merry Christmas

Patrick ~ Biggest Loser!

Patrick House is the new "Biggest Loser" who won last night in Los Angeles, CA.  A week ago, about 400 people gathered with him at the Vicksburg Convention Center to watch as he clinched a spot in the live two-hour season finale in the weight-loss competition.  It is the first for a Mississippian in the shows 10 years on the air to win!  He will receive $250,000 and be under contract to the show for about a year.  He said that he really appreciates the city of Vicksburg for being behind him, and he also said that he really hoped he could bring the title back to us, and he did!  Congratulations Patrick!

Kirk's 11 pt. Buck!

John Kirk, my Godchild, sent me a picture with a nice buck that he bagged recently.  He said that the monster Kansas whitetail scored 155-1/2 and had 11 scoreable points.  He also wrote that he was in the perfect set up and was patient and really loves it when a plan comes together.  I'm so proud of Kirk not only of his hunting abilities but the fact that he is an Assistant Professor at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas.  Recently he and his wife, Melissa, had their first child, a boy, Kaleb.  Looking forward to seeing him, his wife and newborn son for the first time during the Christmas holidays.  My congrats to John Kirk on his fine harvest in our great wild outdoors!

Hunting Off Redbone Rd!

Walked by the horses enjoying a beautiful cold afternoon on the farm.

Shadow of me in deer stand.

What I saw to the right of me...

...in front of the stand

...to the left of stand.

Where I walked in to get on my stand.

We got to the farm around 2:30 and Jamie put Bob on the other side of the barn in the woods and I hunted the opposite side on a very cold and windy afternoon.  Got to my stand around 3:00 and got off about 5:25.  I did not see a deer but heard a lot of shots going off around me after 4:00.  Jamie picked up Bob in his truck and while going through the field heading back to the house, they saw 4 does and all of a sudden a big buck walked out and they just watched by the headlights.  Bob said it was an 8 pt. buck and that it was so huge that it looked like a boxcar! Now, that's a BIG BUCK!!  :)

Hunting This Afternoon

Bob and I will be going to the woods this afternoon to deer hunt at my granddaughter's place south of town.  It is very windy today but going to give it our best shot!  I have hunted on windy days and seen deer move, so we will see.  The high today will be in the mid-forties and down into the twenties tonight.  Will report my hunting story tomorrow!  :)

Two Photos Published

I was so excited to see that two of my photos were published today in the Classified Section of The Vicksburg Post.  The top one of the ominous clouds taken during a sunset near the Louisiana Overlook and the second one shown with the transformer taken after I drove to the nearest overlook closest to the bridges on the same day, November 15, 2010.  The caption under the photos said...Sunsets in Vicksburg during the past few weeks have grabbed the attention of more than one photographer in Vicksburg.  From left are two taken by Marian Love Phillips; above is one taken by Joseph Jackson.

I believe that these are the clouds that I took the same day as Joseph Jackson.  I just happened to be looking out my bedroom window and grabbed my camera and stood out on our back porch to take this picture.  Noticed at the bottom of photo you can see the stadium lights from the Vicksburg High School Stadium on November 28, 2010.

Picture that was taken by Joseph Jackson.

Vicksburg On The Hunt

I was so happy to see Wanda's picture in yesterday's paper about her harvesting not only one deer but two in one day!  I know her personally and she is also my friend on Facebook.  She bagged her first buck on November 20 in northern Warren County.  The buck was a 160-pound, 8-pointer with a 14-inch wide spread and 17-1/2 inch main beams.  She also bagged a 146-pound doe the same morning.  You go Wanda and my congrats again!  :)

Jack Wright, 5, took down an 8-point, 160-pounder for his first buck on November 7.  Jack was hunting with his father, Randy, at Rawhide Hunting Club.  Jack is the son of Randy and Jessica Wright.

Vicksburg resident Anden McClurg killed this 8-point buck on private land in northeast Warren County on November 15.  The buck had a 16-inch spread and 20-1/2 inch beams.

Larime Haynes Killed this 10-pointer while hunting in Hinds County.  The deer weighed 183 pounds, and had a rack measuring 15 inches wide with 20-1/2 inch-wide main beams.  Haynes made the shot from 100 yards with a .223 rifle.  Larime is the son of Julie and Larime Haynes of Vicksburg.  Congrats to all Vicksburg hunters in our great wild outdoors!

It's Christmas Party Week

This past Wednesday the Pi Alpha Kappa, Omega Chapter, had our annual Christmas Party at Jacques Cafe in the Park at Battlefield Inn.  We all enjoyed a delicious meal with our husbands and opened presents from our secret sisters from the past year.  I was June's (standing to the far left) secret sister throughout the year.  We also had several members that could not attend.  My secret sister is sitting to the far right end with her new hat and scarf on.  She also got a beautiful lighted copper Christmas tree that Bob, my husband, had made.  Before we left, we drew names for our new secret sister for the coming year of 2011.

Tonight the Vicksburg Senior Center is hosting a Christmas party at the Battlefield Inn with dinner and dancing.  We are looking forward to seeing our friends there and enjoy the festivities.  Wishing one and all a very Merry Christmas!

Dave Hunting In The Snow!

Some views from my hunting blind in Indiana last Saturday...

Hunting Blind you say...??

Hey, I'm 62 years old here, cut me some slack!!!

If I look tired in this picture, you're right, I am. I didn't get much sleep since my blood sugar took a dive and I was up half the night with that. Then I had a doctors appointment, followed by plowing snow, a nap, and THEN a few hours of hunting. I.E. Sitting in the woods enjoying the quiet and the snow...Griz

Alaska Photos of Sitka Deer

Published on October 8, 2010, a foursome of young bucks fell upon some good luck as they were pulled from the icy waters of Stephens Passage by a group of locals out to enjoy the last few days of recent sunshine.  These good Samaritans describe their experience as "one of those defining moments in life." A group of four juvenile Sitka black-tailed deer. They swam right toward the boat, then, they started to circle the boat looking up and looked like they needed help.

The typically skittish and absolutely wild animals came willingly and once on the boat, collapsed with exhaustion.  They recovered on the back of Tom Satre's 62-foot charter vessel, the Alaska Quest. All deer were transported toTaku Harbor and witnesses reported they all recovered from what appeared to be exhaustion and a bit of hypothermia.

One of the four Sitka black-tailed bucks pulled from the waters of Stephens Passage is seen being transported via wheelbarrow by Tom Satre after reaching Taku Harbor.

Once the group reached the dock, the first to be pulled from the water hopped onto the dock, looked back, then leapt into the waters of the harbor and swam to shore. He quickly disappeared into the forest. Two others followed suit, after a bit of prodding and assistance from the group.  What a happy ending for our 4-legged deer in the wild outdoors!
