Mississippi - One of Three Late-Rut States

A nice heavy 10 pt. buck!

An interesting article that I came across today was in Field & Stream online of bucks being on the move in three late-rut states - with Mississippi being one of them.  Check out the blog post by Eric Bruce on (1) overall activity status, (2) rub and scrape making, (3) chasing, (4) daytime movement and (5) estrous signs. Hopefully, this information will be of help in harvesting your buck in our great wild outdoors.  Wishing y'all GOODHUNTING!

Alex's Monster Buck!

An Opelousas, Louisiana hunter, Alex LeBlanc, ignored his buddies' chiding that it was too hot and humid to hunt, and the result was this pending state-record buck.  It has been green scored at just more than 204 inches.  Read all about this fabulous buck and hunt here at Louisiana Sportsman dot com.

Christmas Day Luncheon @ Granddaughter, Victoria & Family

My great grandson, Ian, with a Christmas gift from his Grandmother Kathy.

Ian was showing me his big playhouse his Dad and Mom got him for Christmas.  How do you like that stance?  He is 6 years old and will soon start the first grade in August 2014. He has been going to pre-school for several years.  His Mom said his playhouse will be moved to another spot on the property.

My granddaughter, Victoria and I.  She is such a sweet granddaughter.  I am truly blessed with four daughters, a step-daughter and step-son, six granddaughters, three grandsons, six-step grandchildren, two great grandsons, five step-great granddaughters, one-step great grandson and one-great great niece.

Ian showing off his first lost tooth to his Grandmother, Kathy.  He told me that he got a whole dollar bill from the tooth fairy.  Way to go Ian!

My daughter, Kathy, took this picture of us all together in Ian's new playhouse.  Ian will have so much fun playing in it.

Ian up in a loft that he calls his attic with his Mom!

Neil's Nice Buck!

My Facebook friend, Mike Snow's cousin, Neil Snow, harvested this really nice buck in Winston County, MS, yesterday and scored 161.  The buck weighed 205 lbs.  They have got pictures of this deer for the last three years.  His son, Gabe, saw him the day before and couldn't get a clean shot. They have very good management on the land. My congrats to Neil on his great buck in our wild outdoors! Way to go!

Here's a shot of some of their huge successes over the years!

Birds Of A Feather Do Flock Together

While on my quick weekend get-a-way to New Orleans, I stayed with family members that had ducks in their backyard with a lagoon and had a blast taking picture of them. Hope you enjoy the shots that I took!

The geese were eating and honking away!

Went that a way...

No, that a way!

I was told this was called a turkey duck!

I was surprised how close I could get to this duck and just stood there taking pictures.

Thinking about getting in the water.

Here goes...

Ahhhhhh!

Later in the afternoon I caught this turkey duck resting.

Then suddenly appeared this beautiful white duck!

Look whats swimming in the lagoon!

Beautiful Mallard Ducks!

Love the mirrored images of the white duck!

Hunting @ 94 Years

Ninety-four year old Paul Sersha's 2013 Minnesota doe.

Paul started hunting in 1934 and continues to this day. He uses the same gun he has used since 1958, a Remington .30-06, purchased for $59.00. What an inspiration he is and a true hunter.  He hunts for meat and not for a BIG rack.   Most of us that love hunting can only hope and pray that we can hunt that long...I know at 72 years of age I hope to be around a long time to keep hunting as long as I can.  My congrats to Paul in our great wild outdoors and what an inspiration he is to all hunters!  Way to go Paul!

Little Birdie

My picture above was on page 2 of The Vicksburg Post in yesterday's paper.  The caption under it read -

Marian Love Phillips shot this mockingbird perched and waiting with anticipation on a rotten stump for the impending storm and a grey looking sky over the Mighty Mississippi River at the Louisiana Circle recently.

The Vicksburg Post will only accept for publication ViewPoint photos that are current and of interest to the public and submitted electronically.  Submitted photos should be accompanied by complete caption information and include a phone number for the photographer.  Photos may be submitted to photos@vicksburgpost.com

I'm once again humbled to have had another one of my photos picked to be in our paper, The Vicksburg Post!  Thank you so much!

Rifle Or Bow Kill

I was contacted recently by a Facebook friend who wanted to know if I had heard anything about a buck being shot in my hometown recently and told him no.  He sent me a forum site that had the pictures posted and was shocked to know that a deer had been killed in a neighborhood in town. The guy that took all the pictures was in the woods looking for a meter that he needed to read when he found the deer.  He took the pictures and then when he came out, the guys were there to load the deer.  The meter reader called the game warden and had him on speaker phone when the guy told him about shooting it at night.  All the pictures were turned over to the game warden as evidence.  Not sure what has happened to the shooter or to the ones loading the buck into the vehicle.  Looks like to me if a high-powered rifle had gone off in the city someone would have called it in. Also, they were speculating on the forum that it may have been taken down with a bow by the looks of the exit hole.  Whatever the case may be it was still illegal to shoot a deer within the city limits, rife or bow!

The shooter!

Update:  Married friends of mine had this to say recently  - Last I heard the Mississippi Department Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks has the head.  We live close to East Avenue and thinking back we heard a very loud gun shot a few weeks ago in that direction. It was obviously not a pistol shot.  First words out my mouth was "that was a rifle shot".  It had to be around midnight, because I was in bed.  His wife, my best girlfriend, said she heard it also and was very loud.  She also said it probably came out of the Vicksburg National Military Park which is not far from East Avenue near Mission 66.
