Fireworks In The River City

Last night we had our annual fireworks show and concert in my hometown of Vicksburg, MS.  Our Mayor stated that he believed Tuesday's Fourth of July fireworks show in downtown was the biggest he had ever seen.

According to the estimates of the crowd size, he might very well be correct.

City and law enforcement officials estimated that between 10,000 and 14,000 people attended the 2-1/2 hour program.

The weather was in the 80s when the Freedom Band started playing at 7 p.m. at the Old Depot Museum.

The fireworks were shot off from a barge in the Yazoo Diversion Canal off the of Mississippi River behind the Old Depot Museum.

The Vicksburg Chief of Police Walter Armstrong said his department called in an additional 10 officers to supplement those already on duty Tuesday to help manage the traffic in and around downtown.

I parked across from the Old Court House Museum on Cherry Street and my sister and I walked down the hill on the north side of the museum.

The Downtown Vicksburg Drector Kim Hopkins said she agreed with the estimates of the crowd size, saying she "saw people everywhere." People were all the way from Walnut Street to the waterfront and on nearly every corner, in the parking garages and along every street.  It was packed.

People were standing in the street here to get a good view of the fireworks.

As I was walking back to my truck I looked up and saw the moon appearing behind some trees and snapped this picture of the Old Court House Museum which covers a whole city block.  It was built in 1858 and stands today as Vicksburg's most historical structure having withstood the Siege Of Vicksburg in 1863.   This is the north side facing of this impressive building. Hoping everyone had a great Fourth of July!
