Finally Fawnage!
FINALLY...WE HAVE ACHIEVED "FAWNAGE." !
My friend Dave, who lives in Indiana, sent me these pictures and said....I finally managed to get some good pictures of the fawns in one woods. Got a couple of bucks too, but one has a goofed-up rack. I'd love to remove him from the gene pool this fall!!! I notice also that the adults are already starting to molt and shed their beautiful orange coats in exchange for their dark, winter coat... This seems early to me. Hope it bodes well and doesn't become a bellwether for a bad winter...Dave

SAR - Search and Rescue
"Our Family Serving Your Family"
This 43 year old Lufkin, Texas blogger loves the outdoors so much that not only is he an avid hunter but also a volunteer for SAR, a Hudson Fire Department K-9 Search and Rescue team since 1984. He calls himself a "SARs" junkie! He tells stories as an insider of the unsung heroes who wait patiently for the next call to come to help others in time of need. His occupation is in law enforcement. He has a 9 year old son that he takes fishing, camping and hunting and teaches him just as his Dad taught him. He harvested his first deer when he was only 10 years old and he still can see the smile on his father's face and will never forget that day. He also has a hunting blog called, Hunting Texas Public Land and proudly displays our Outdoor Bloggers Summit banner. Go over and check out his two blogs and follow him throughout the great outdoors of hunting and of searching and rescuing.

Barges and Boats
Last Sunday we took a drive down near Diamond Jacks Casino just to sit closer to the river to see if a barge would come along. Across the river were 3 boats anchored on the sandbar bar and people swimming in the river. Nearby, a couple was getting ready to go ski boating on the river. All of a sudden here comes a towboat with a huge unloaded barges up the river and he made a wide turn in bend because another barge was coming behind and was close to where the people were on the sandbar. It was very interesting to watch and was very hot day. As we went back up the steep hill to leave, I stopped to take a picture of the bridge that was out and being torn down. This bridge has the Kansas City Southern Railway tracks under it. The 80-year-old bridge began coming down on August 7th in preparation for its replacement by a roadway-topped train tunnel expected to be completed by next summer. It has been close since January 2009 and is the lone bridge along the main north-south corridor connecting downtown and I-20. It has been a problem for motorist and business owners along Washington St. Kanzaa Construction of Tokepa, Kansas, holds the $8.6 million contract for the project. As we were going back home we saw another long barge making it's way up the river. It is something about the river traffic that makes everyone stop and look. To me it's fascinating. What I miss the most about the river are the three queens, Mississippi, Delta and American paddle steamboats that would dock at our riverfront and you could hear their whistle blowing as they were coming down the canal and started playing calliope music. Hopefully, one day they will put them back into service. If you are interested in towboats you can go to a towboat gallery and look at them.

You can't see the towboat pushing the barges...its so long!

Vicksburg's In The Running!

This is exciting that our Vicksburg National Military Park (VNMP) is in the running to be America's Favorite. The contest is sponsored by the National Park Foundation, the Coca-Cola Company and Dr. Ian Smith, a medical/diet expert on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club" and creator of the nationwide 50 Million Pound Challenge.
Through the America Is Your Park campaign, all national and state parks in the US are in the running to be named the most popular park, and a title that comes with a $100.000 case prize.
"The VNMP is the crown jewel of America," said park historian Terry Winschel. "We are the art park of the world."
The park was established in 1899, the 1,800-acre VNMP has about 1,350 historic monuments, markers and tablets. It also features the country's largest cemetery for Civil War burials, containing about 18,000 grave sites. The park's program include the Living History Program, which features live re-enactments of Civil War battles by volunteers, and Junior Ranger Day, a day for young children to learn about the park's history through interpretation and hands-on activities. Among the accolades, the park was named weeks ago by readers of AAA Southern Traveler, an American Automobile Association publication, as the South's second-best heritage attraction behind the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.
The contest winner will be announed via a news release a week after the voting window closes. A special event at the winning park will take place in September.
Please take time to vote for our beautiful park by logging on to http://www.livepositively.com/ and cast a vote for the Vicksburg National Military Park.

The Rogue Huntress
I noticed a new follower on my site yesterday and decided to check it out and see what it was all about. I saw that The Rogue Huntress is a hunting lady by the named of Laura and she lives in Manitoba, Canada. Her new blog is called The WhiteTailed Doe. Laura went on her first hunting trip three years ago as an observer and the next fall she went rifle hunting. She harvested three deer and was hooked. She said she received archery lessons as a gift for Christmas that same year and in the following fall of 2009 she hunted with her new bow. Since it was a warm season she did not get a deer. She is looking forward to this season in getting the buck she has been watching. She even bought her a new deer stand and was looking forward to this hunting season and have everything set up in time. But her luck changed when her hunting friend was assaulted and badly injured and will take months for him to recover. She is still trying to get her stand set up and find a good spot to hunt in time. I do hope things will work out for Laura and that she will find someone to help her since archery season opens August 30 and black bear on the 25th. Go over and wish her good luck and I'm going to encourage her to join our Outdoor Bloggers Summit so she can get a good support team going in her favor in our great wild outdoors.
The Rogue Huntress par excellence!

Another Picture Published!
Wow, it looks like I'm on a roll here...got another picture published today in our hometown paper, The Vicksburg Post! I had sent several in a few weeks ago and was surprised that they picked this one and very happy they did. I'm hoping they will published the one of a swamp scene that I thought turned out very well also. (From the swamp scene link, it was the top one)
Caption they put under my picture which reads...Marian Phillips and her husband were at a deer camp in the Mississippi Delta when she spotted this sunflower, one in a full field of blooms.
