Canadian Geese Patrol

Canadian Geese take over front yard suburban home in Asbury Park, NJ. The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) is a wild goose with a black head and neck, white patches on the face, and a brownish-gray body. Native to arctic and temperate regions of North America, it is occasionally found in northern Europe and has been introduced to other temperate regions. This species is native to North America. It breeds in Canada and the northern United States in a variety of habitats. Its nest is usually located in an elevated area near water such as streams, lakes, ponds and sometimes on a beaver lodge. Its eggs are laid in a shallow depression lined with plant material and down. The Great Lakes region maintains a very large population of Canada Geese. In recent years, Canada Goose populations in some areas have grown substantially, so much so that many consider them pests for their droppings, bacteria in their droppings, noise, and confrontational behavior. This problem is partially due to the removal of natural predators and an abundance of safe, man-made bodies of water near food sources, such as those found on golf courses, in public parks and beaches, and in planned communities. Due in part to the interbreeding of various migratory subspecies with the introduced non-migratory Giant subspecies, Canada Geese are frequently a year-around feature of such urban environments. Contrary to its normal migration routine, large flocks of Canada Geese have established permanent residence in Esquimalt, British Columbia, on the Chesapeake Bay, in Virginia's James River regions, and in the Triangle area of North Carolina (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), and nearby Hillsborough. Some Canada Geese have taken up permanent residence as far south as Florida, in places such as retention ponds in apartment complexes.

A Memorial Day Concert In V'burg National Military Park

Last Saturday I was invited by my nephew to go with him and family to attend the Vicksburg National Military Park Memorial Day concert by the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.  Here are a few pictures I took of a perfect evening of entertaining music.

This grasshopper hopped on top of the hood of my GMC Sierra and posed for this picture the other day.  He's looking pretty cool there!

Massive 725 lb. HOG By Bow

I took this massive boar with my Hoyt Carbon Spyder 30. It weighed in at 725 pounds! It obviously had not been feral for very long, but it was very difficult to track and sneak up on. It fed quite a few families in need as well! My goal is always to put an animal down as quickly as possible, and not have it suffer needlessly.

Thanking Two Grandchildren For Service To Country

This Memorial Day I want to thank two of my grandchildren for serving our country. Grandson Michael "Ethan" Kelly went into the service on October 2, 2012, and station at Pope Airfield, Fort Bragg, NC. He graduated basic military training on December 2, 2012, at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX and last year signed up for 4 more years. 

My oldest granddaughter, Sonya Michelle, a Navy veteran graduated from boot camp at Great Lakes, IL. She was stationed at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA and has an honorable medical discharged. I am honored and thankful for both my grandchildren for serving our country and for all servicemen and women who risk their lives every day to keep America out of harm's way. 



Remembering all those who paid the ultimate price with their lives serving and fighting for our great country.    May God Bless America!

Placing Flags In The Vicksburg National Military Park, MS

Here are some pictures that my Granddaughter Victoria took this morning of my Great Grandson Ian with his cousin, Kaleigh who volunteered to put out flags at the Vicksburg National Military Park Cemetery to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.  I'm so proud of my Grand-daughter making a difference in raising him right with his cousin in volunteering to help a worthy and patriotic cause.

Riverboats, Queen of the MS & American Queen In Town!

The Grand American Queen moored in the Yazoo Diversion Canal yesterday while her passengers toured our historic civil war town.  Riverboat, Queen of the MS was also at the waterfront for half-a-day with her passengers.  She left around 5:00 yesterday southbound.

The Grand American Queen is as big or bigger than the Old Depot Museum Building. 

Another picture I took of the American Queen yesterday afternoon around 3:30 when she blew her whistle. Maybe it's telling her passengers to start heading her way.  

Dawsyn's First Birthday Party

I was invited to my sister and brother-in law's home in Bovina, MS last Saturday for my Great Great Niece's first Birthday party.  It was held in their gazebo.  Everyone had a great time!

Civil War Era Dr. J. Hostetter's Bitters Bottle Found

My Granddaughter Victoria found this bottle "Hostetter's Bitters" in Paces Bayou on her property yesterday that runs to the MS River.  She found out by searching online that Hostetter's "Celebrated" Bitters was a nostrum developed by Dr. Jacob Hostetter of Lancaster, PA back in 1853 and became a national best-seller.  During the Civil War, it was sold to soldiers as a positive protective against the fatal maladies of the southern swamps and the poisonous tendency of the impure rivers and bayous.  She was so excited to find the bottle that is in good condition and wanted me to share with you.

American Queen For The Day!

Picture of our "New" Farmers Market with a walkway and stage.  You can see an American Queen stops signs that are placed all around town for tourist to visit historical sights of interest. 

The American Queen at our waterfront for a full day of sightseeing for her passengers and will be leaving at 5:00 p.m. The American Queen buses take passengers around our historic town to tour the sites or they walk the hills of Vicksburg.  You can also see a mound of sand that has been placed at the Old Depot Museum with the anticipating rise of the MS River again.

Riverboats America & American Duchess Moored All Day!

Today, riverboats "America" and "American Duchess" were moored all day while their passengers toured our historic civil war town of Vicksburg, Mississippi.  To the right is the Jesse Brent Lower Mississippi River Museum and Interpretive Center.  You can also tour the towboat M/V Mississippi IV that is landlocked on site.

I took a picture of the children playing at Catfish Row Children's Art Park splash fountain on a sunny day that was in the mid-'80s.  A great way for the kiddies to cool off and have some fun in the sun.
