Bill Worrell's World

The Maker of Peace!

A STATEMENT FROM THE ARTIST ABOUT THE DEDICATION AT SEMINOLE CANYON STATE PARK on MAY 21, 1994
Having held a personal reverence for the artists of the Lower Pecos region for a number of years, it is a wonderful privilege to have been given the opportunity of honoring them through my own creative expression, The Maker of Peace. As many of you know, I have had a heartfelt desire to sculpt a monumental tribute to this people whose art, painted on the walls and cliffs of these river areas, gives us a glimpse of our little known prehistoric Texas heritage. Their pictographs are an art form that deserves to be recognized and preserved. I am grateful for being a part of this effort to do both these things through The Rock Art Foundation and the many, many, unnamed others who have been instrumental in making this dream a reality.
It is my desire that you find you own special sense of the meaning of this sculpture and that you do whatever you are capable of doing to help protect the thousands of paintings that still exist not only in this area, but in all ancient rock art sites, wherever they may be.

Here is an explanation of Worrell's work and how it all got started. He has sculptures, painting, posters, books, wearable art and has recorded songs and much, much more. A very interesting person who has established his on inventive love of nature.

A Celebration of Love

After the ceremony Bob danced with his daughter, since Ron was playing on the keyboard, with his band, High Altitude. I also danced with Bob and Bill Worrell. A very special evening to be remembered by all.

Another special guest speaker was cartoonist, actor, Vic Lee. Vic Lee grew up the son of actors who recognized at an early age that their boy was saddled with a huge sense of curiosity, talent, and rebellion. It was clear that this combination was not going to point him in the direction of any traditional career fields.

An All-American soccer player, Lee left college early to pursue a professional career, which was cut short due to a debilitating on-field injury.

The next 10 years were spent as a bartender and stage actor in Seattle. It was this occupational duo that helped form Vic's skewed and ironic view of the world. He later combined these views, his love of health, and three business partners to create a series of athletic clubs in San Diego.

As the appointed "marketing director", Vic chose to go against the typical health club marketing grain and use cartoons as a way of getting people to read the advertisements. "I tried to find a local cartoonist," confesses Lee, "that could convey the idea of fitness and humor to an educated market week after week. After months of searching, I gave up and decided to give it a shot myself."

After winning three Nova 7 Awards for Marketing (Health & Fitness Industry) and building a small legion of fans of his cartoons - including his future wife – Vic decided to sell his shares in the gyms and develop his insightful sense of humor and cartooning skills. A short time later, he was syndicated by King Features.

"Pardon My Planet" is distributed to nearly 200 newspapers. Since the launch of his comic strip/panel, Lee has become a prominent oil painter, who goes by the name St. Victor. His oil painting work has been exhibited at art galleries in La Jolla and San Diego and can be seen online at http://www.stvictordiaries.com/.

Vic and his wife Lisa spend their time perusing the country looking for new environments from which to study human nature and record these observations in drawings, writings, and photographs.

"I can't help but view the world through the eyes of a bartender - with a morbidly detached curiosity, and have concluded that life is most fun when served straight up."
In 2006, New York Arts Magazine and World Arts Media included Vic on the prestigious list of "Top 500 Artists Worldwide."

Vic and Lisa currently live in Santa Fe, NM with their many animal children. They are the proud proprietors of the Laughing Branch Ranch at Good Dog Mountain, a dog rescue sanctuary.
Fans of Pardon My Planet can email Vic at: pardonmyplanet@hotmail.com

One of the very special guest speakers for the renewing of vows was Bill Worrell, a warm and friendly outdoorsman with a flair for humor and satire, Worrell is energized by the elements in life that surround him. He maintains two full-time studios, one in Santa Fe and one in Texas. His studio on the banks of the Llano river in Art, Texas is a synthesis of New Mexico, Texas, and designs inspired by his life-long passion for archeology.

He is presently writing a book about his years of educational, business, emotional, and spiritual dealings in the fascinating world of fine art and is continuing such writings as appear in his book Voices From The Caves - The Shamans Speak. To read more about Worrell go to his site at Bill Worrell.com.
We received this cute invitation to come help celebrate their ten year renewal of vows on Saturday, September, 22nd at 2:00 p.m. They survived torrential rain, blending of children, a cattle drive and they still wanted to do it all over again. From left to right; Jessica, Brandon, Karen, Ron, Kristina and Brittany. A real sweetthing!

These flowers are called pecos sunflowers and were at a winery where we stopped on our way home from eating lunch by the Rio Grande River. Actually, these flowers were all along the roads and highways. Wild flowers everywhere. Charming, Just Charming!

A Great Vacation!

We stopped and ate lunch at this neat restaurant on the Rio Grande River. It was a nice scenic spot and we ate outside to enjoy the beautiful view. About 15 minutes after we finished eating another thunderstorm came through. We timed that just right!

Some pretty flowered brush along the way.
I thought this was very unusual to see the clouds above and below the mountain. It was a beautiful scenic drive.
Ron got the tarantula to crawl up on some driftwood and I took this picture from inside the truck. He said that the tarantulas are migrating now back to where they were born.
As we were leaving for a trip to Taos, NM, Ron saw this tarantula crossing the road not far from the house and he got out to catch it. Karen took this picture before Ron picked it up.

A beautiful picture of the sun going down the day we got there on September 19, 2007. The next day we had thunderstorms and that was awesome sitting up on top of the world!
Here is a picture I took of Karen (Bob's daughter, my step-daughter) and Ron in front of their home.

We stayed in a two million dollar adobe home with walls 12 inches thick and over 5,000 sq. ft. It is a grand home with a 360 degree view of beautiful mountains and rolling hills of pinon and juniper bushes, flowers, etc., on 10 acres of land. You can view the sun coming up and the sun going down. The home took over a year and half to build and in January of this year the family moved in. A really nice place to stay!

We're Back Home!

We are back home from a wonderful trip out west to Santa Fe, New Mexico to visit our family. The rest of the week I will be posting pictures of our vacation along with art and interesting people we met while there. My step son-in-law, Ron, is part owner of three Artisan stores (Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Taos) which is the art supply store of the southwest. He is also an accomplished musician and has a band called the High Altitude Band and has recorded a CD. He organized the May IAPS 2007 (International Association of Pastels Societies) expo. There is a YouTube video of Ron explaining the rich learning opportunities that you can achieve by networking with other artists.

We did have an interesting trip home yesterday and was delayed for two hours in Albuquerque, NM, due to a radar breakdown in Memphis, TN. Bob, having to be transported by wheelchair, was boarded on first only to be stopped twice at the door of the cockpit and returned to wait with other frustrating travelers on a full flight to Atlanta. The third boarding was the charm! We were lucky that our layover was four hours (minus two) and we did not miss our connection coming home. In the moment you have to just go with the flow and enjoy the journey/adventure along the way.

Passing along for what's it's worth!

I wanted to share this with you from a friend who sent this to me today.

I have a friend who has a friend who is president of his homeowners' association in the Washington, D.C. suburbs. They were having a terrible problem with litter near some of his association's homes. The reason, according to Wallace, (my friend's friend), is that six very large, luxurious new houses are being built right next to their community. The trash was coming from the laborers working at the construction sites and included bags from McDonalds, Burger King and 7-11, plus coffee cups, napkins, cigarette butts, coke cans, empty bottles, etc. He went to see the site supervisor and even the general contractor, politely urging them to get their workers not to litter the neighborhood, all to no avail. He called the city, county, and police and got no help there either. So here's what his community did. They organized about twenty folks, named themselves the "Inner Neighborhood Services" group, and arranged to go out at lunch time and "police" the trash themselves. It is what they did while picking up the trash that is so hilarious. They bought navy blue baseball caps and had the initials "INS" embroidered in gold on the caps. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand what they hoped people might mistakenly think the letters really stood for. After the Inner Neighborhood Services group's first lunch time pickup detail, with all of them wearing their caps and some carrying cameras, 46 out of the total of 68 construction workers did not show up for work the next morning, and they haven't come back yet; it's been ten days now. The general contractor, I'm told, is madder than hell, but can't say anything publicly because he could be busted for hiring illegal aliens. Wallace and his bunch can't be accused of impersonating federal personnel, because they have the official name of the group recorded in their homeowner association minutes along with a notation about the vote to approve formation of the new subcommittee. And besides, they informed the INS in advance of their plans and according to Wallace the INS said basically, "Have at it"!

Isn't it nice to hear good news once in a while? :)

An Address in Heaven?

I received this e-mail from a friend yesterday and wanted to share it with my fellow bloggers.

In Jackson, Mississippi we have a weather anchor lady by the name of Barbie Bassett on Channel 3TV. Her brother Doug died of a massive heart attack while enroute via helicopter to Oxford, MS on August 10, 2007. She wanted to share his life-after-death experience - this is her converation with her brother.

Doug said the last thing he remembered while in the ambulance helicopter was hearing the pilot say, "Six minutes out" (which indicated they were six minutes away from reaching the hospital in Oxford, MS). At that point, everything went black. Doug said he was immediately in what he described as a peaceful place with whitish/gray matter surrounding him. He said this resembled clouds. He saw the brightest, most fluorescent light ahead. Doug said it was ten times brighter than the sun and illuminated everything with the most beautiful, pure color of light. Although Doug said he was walking straight toward the light, he could not feel anything touching his feet, nor did he look down at his legs--he just had the sensation of walking. (I asked if he felt like he was floating and he said no. He was walking). Doug said the temperature was perfect and that sticks out in his mind. He said he knew exactly who the light was and was being drawn towards it. Doug said the first person he kept telling himself he wanted to see was my grandfather. (My grandfather was such an instrumental leader in our family, always giving spiritual insight and was a wise man). I asked my brother if he realized he was dead or if he missed his family (this is a question I've always wondered--do people in heaven KNOW they have died and do they miss everyone they left behind?). Doug said no. He had no knowledge that he had died and did not think about his children or his wife. I guess that's what the Bible means when it says there are "no tears in heaven". However, he was determined to keep walking to the light and to seek out my grandfather. The next thing he knew, the stretcher was shaking as the paramedics were taking him out of the helicopter and a doctor asked him if he knew who he was. Interesting things to note: Doug said although he was dead for only a short while, he said it felt like he spent hours in heaven. We also talked about a family member for whom we've been praying for and how burdened his heart is for this family member to come to Christ. "I've been to heaven and I want to go back," Doug said with tears in his eyes. "I want to make sure everyone knows it is real. I do not want anyone to experience the alternative."I love how Philippians 3:20 puts it, "our citizenship is in heaven". Yes, we have an earthly residence, but as Christians, we have an address in heaven, too. I am so thankful to have my brother here on earth. But knowing Doug has an address in heaven is a much greater blessing. Do your family members have their heavenly address?
