The Vicksburg Post reported today that a deer hunter was shot and died in the Sharkey forest.
An Itta Bena man described by family as "a good man who worked hard" was shot and killed while hunting Tuesday afternoon in the Delta National Forest in Sharkey County. Lester Barnes, Jr., 47, was on horseback with four others for a New Year's Day deer hunt when he was shot about 12:41 p.m. The group was hunting in the Sunflower Wildlife Management Area in the national forest. The shooting appeared accidental and was being investigated by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. A full report is expected in the next day or so. He worked as a mechanic and as a part-time electrician, and leaves a wife, two children, three step-children and 12 grandchildren. The Sunflower Wildlife Management Area covers about 60,000 acres of forest and is a prime hunting location for deer, waterfowl and other game. Everyone, please Hunt Smart and Think Safety!
That's a real shame - accidents like this are so preventable! Hunter Safety 1A.
