Hunting Heroes

A county boy can survive:  Knowlege of guns and concealment provides a good basis for soldiering.

Bob, my husband, recently showed me an article that was written up in Outdoor Life a few years ago about hunters making better soldiers.  It went on to say that if you want to become a great hunter, consider joining one of the military's elite Special Forces units.  The skills taught to those soldiers work as well on deer hunts as they do on combat mission.

Likewise, if you hope to become a great soldier and you grew up hunting, your're already got a leg up on other new recruits.  Retired army major Herman Harke, a former Special Forces Qualification Course insturctor, says country boys and hunters make better soldiers from the start.  Likewise, Hugh Bartrug, a longbow hunter and recently retired SEAL, says his training pays hugh dividends when he is deer hunting.  -Ken Perrotte

Why Hunters Make Great Soldiers -
*  They're more at home in the woods.
*  They've honed basic stalking skills and the use of camouflage to remain concealed.
*  They know how to sit patiently for hours.
*  They've looked down the barrel at a living, breathing animal and pulled the trigger.

Why Soldiers Make Great Hunters -
*  They're taught advanced tracking, map-reading and movement skills.
*  Training improves shooting skills, including how to better lead a target.
*  They're taught to move stealthily in the dark and set up ambushes where the quarry is comfortable.
*  Training helps them develop the ability to read terrain, patiently still-hunt to a desired location, control noise and use backdrops for cover.

Bob served in the U. S. Army and the U. S. Army Reserves and fired expert.  I wanted to join the WAC/WAVES when I graduated from high school but my mother would not hear of it.  At least now I can get out in the woods and enjoy the great sport of hunting.
