Watermelons and More Watermelons!

After we left Rex Sunday morning, we headed towards Okolona, MS, to visit some friends there before heading home the next day.  Gerald, "Rooster", and Bob used to work together at Anderson-Tully Lumber Company in Vicksburg.  Rooster worked as an inspector grading lumber and my husband was Director of Labor Relations for the company when they became good friends.  Bob is retired now but Rooster works at a sawmill in Mathison, MS, still grading lumber.  Actually, Bob and I hunted behind the sawmill and really had a great time a few years ago.  Rooster grows his vegetables on some land which backs up against the Natchez Trace Parkway, where he and his wife used to live and he still deer hunts there as well.  He sets up his produce stand near the garden and sells on his off time.  We were able to bring home some fresh vegetables and a nice size watermelon.  We really enjoyed seeing both our friends in Water Valley and in Van Vleet near Okolona, MS.  It was a wonderful and relaxing get-a-way for both of us.

  1. Hi Marian
You all are getting close to our old home place near Ackerman---"Chester" southeast of Mathison. Have you all reached the 100 degree mark down that way? I am ready for cooler temps and some fall bass fishing. I know you guys can't wait for deer season.

  2. Yes, we have reached the 100 mark several times...while in our truck it had read 106 outside and the heat index has been up to 115. I will be ready for cooler weather and deer season for sure and I know for you fishing! :)

We got off the Natchez Trace at Mathison and from there to Winona to I-55 south. I love the Natchez Trace Parkway...it is such a beautiful drive...oh, and we saw some turkeys along side the road. Was nice to see! :)

  3. I bet your vegetables and watermelon will be very tasty...Cold,juicy watermelon ranks right up there for summertime treats in my opinion. ;)

  4. Next time you all are down that way go by the Jeff Busby Park on the trace and go up on the mountain. You can take the trail walk at the top of the mountain and head to the spring in one of the lower sections of the mountain. We use to got there some on the weekend and my Mom would fix a picnic lunch and we would eat on the deck near the spring. The water is ice cold. You may already know about this place, our old home place is about 3 miles south of there. Have a great weekend.

  5. cdgardens - got the watermelon nice and cold ready to be eaten today and had fresh eggplant last night...yummy! Have some banana peppers, tomatoes and okra also. After I got home and loaded the pics...saw the cantaloupes on the ground...they had given us some at the house and was so delicious.

Bill - next time we are in the area will check it out. Never heard of Jeff Busby Park...sounds like you have a lot of fond memories there with your Mother when you were young. :)
