Flooding On Hwy 61 North

My husband, Bob, took most of the pictures here and the one above is showing the MS Yazoo Valley RR Depot going underwater.  As I drove north on old Hwy 61, Bob took pictures of the water coming close to the roads edge.  We passed a lot of dump trucks hauling dirt and sand up and down the road.  This highway will eventually be closed.

Here we are coming up to the intersection of old Hwy 61 at the bypass which will soon be underwater.

At the intersection you can see the dump trucks getting ready to make a turn going back towards old Hwy 61 South.

Heading back towards town on Hwy 61 bypass.

At the bottom of Lee Street, not far from our home, is Golding Barge Lines offices and as you can see it is surrounded by the river.  This is a family business and has opened temporary offices about a block east.

We headed back over to the Vicksburg Riverfront Park and the prediction is for the river to get up to the perimeter of the crossties.  Al Roker of the Today Show, who is in town broadcasting, said that the current of the river is moving so fast it could fill up the Superdome in 30 minutes.  What we don't need is more water but rain is in the forecast and could last four days straight.

I took this picture of some love birds who are not concerned about the river but enjoying a nice breeze in the shade with towboats going up and down the Mighty Mississippi!

  2. Thanks JDP! We should be safe but a lot of people are having to find a place to stay until they can get back to their homes if anything is left. Been in one flood of 3 feet in the house from a creek backing up in the subdivision after a hard rain. It's no fun!

  3. Marian I do not know what we would do if our home were to flood. We live in a creek bottom and have flood insurance but I sure would not want to have to go through that. Stay Safe!
