This past Tuesday I went by the Louisiana Overlook at Vicksburg to see if anything was coming and could not see a towboat pushing two empty barges until it cleared the trees to the left. It was a very cloudy day and the clouds really looked ominous.
It's good to see the sandbars out after the Great Flood of 2011.
Up close view of the Maritime towboat.
I saw this one come out from the Yazoo Canal as I drove up around the circle.
The General towboat must have dropped off a load of grain at the Port of Vicksburg since the barge is now empty.
Passing in the wind and on the mighty Mississippi!
The General going under the bridges with a train passing overhead with...
...another towboat with loaded barges getting ready to make the wide turn in the bend going south.
Thanks DeanO...have been on at least two big towboats but not pushing barges. It is an awesome ride being on the river. You really have to respect it because it can be very dangerous. We have a small boat called, The Sweet Olive, that takes passengers out and have been on it a few times. What I like is going under the bridges. At one time workmen were on it painting the bridge and they were waving at us as we passed below. They acted like they were so glad to see us. I also got a picture of an empty barge up close an personal as we were coming out of the canal near the waterfront. It was huge and awesome! :)
ReplyDeleteI saw some towboats when I went there with the Swedish Navy school ship. We stayed for 2 days in New Orleans. I have good memories New Orleans.
ReplyDeleteNice pictures Marian!
That was nice that you got to come to the US at the Swedish Navy school ship. New Orleans is where my Dad was born and moved to Vicksburg when he was 9 years old. His Dad worked for the Illinois Central Railroad as a telegraph operator. I still have relatives there and have good memories of it also. Glad you liked my pictures and have more that I have posted off and on before on here. I love the river and the riverboats. Thanks for coming by! Marian :)
