A Spike Camp Hunt

This was the first time for me to hunt this stand and was told by Rex that it was one that I could easily get in.  Burney took me to the stand on the 4-wheeler and dropped me off and helped me with my bag and .270 rifle.  As the morning came alive I could see what a beautiful hunting site it was. Unfortunately, I did not see a deer or hog but got some great pictures of the area.  Picture above was in front of me.

To the left.

This tree caught my eye in front of me.  I have never noticed or paid attention to it before in the woods and saw these bright yellow balls on the (Christmas?) tree and on the ground.  I was thinking horse apples!  It was so cool looking.  I remember when riding through the property for the first time, Rex showed me one but it all did not register until now.  I later found out by talking to Burney, when he came to pick me up, that it was a Bodock Tree.  He later cracked one open for me (Osage orange) and it had a nice citrus smell and he uses it as a scent deterrent on his boots. By the way, this is what Rex's blog is named after - http://bodocktimes.blogspot.com (Deer Camp Blog).  Clever!

Behind me to the left as the sun was coming up...beautiful and peaceful!

  2. Another pretty setting you got to hunt at the Christmas Place. Interesting about the Bodock Tree.I recognize the name Osage orange though, we had them in our grove when I was a kid.

  4. Thanks guys...yes, it is a beautiful place to hunt and with that goes beautiful pictures. I don't know how many stands are on it but I do know their are 11 Indian Mounds on the hunting land. A paradise on earth for sure and a lot of pride and hard work by the owners to enjoy the fruits of their labor. I consider myself very lucky to know them and blessed that they let me hunt on the land. :)

  6. It is and I can see you there Rick! I know you would be welcomed. I guess we can dream on, can't we? :)
This is why I take pictures because one day I may not be able to hunt again and I can go back and relive those moments by looking at the pictures! :)
