Coming down Jackson Street Boulevard towards Washington Street as flooding continues to get closer to the main street.
Water surrounding the MS Yazoo Valley RR Station. A lot of people stopping here to take pictures. This is the most visual place in town to get a better view of the rising flood waters. Water is already getting on the lower end of Washington Street a block away.
A new flood wall trying to save the murals and Cat Fish Row Art Park for the children. I found out during the afternoon news that Jim Bakker, a pioneer of Christian television, was reporting the flood at this site. I saw the news truck but did not know who it was.
First time ever to erect this huge floodgate that was built across the road to connect with the exiting flood wall. This was the truck route but had to be detoured. It is a matter of time before the old Hwy 61 North will be closed to all vehicular traffic.
Water is still leaking through the Entrance and Exit floodgates.
Barge traffic on the river is limited to daytime hours and 25 barges per tow. The river's navigation channel between piers 3 and 4 on the Old U. S. 80 bridge is the gap of choice due to more clearance for vessels. Clearance is 63 feet for pier 4 and 62 feet for pier 3, bridge per superintendent Herman Smith.
A couple looking at the Mighty Mississippi at the Mississippi Welcome Center.
A train making its way across the old Hwy 80 bridge from Louisiana to Mississippi.
I am sure everyone wants to watch the level of the encroaching river.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting pictures. We can see how it is changing from day to day.
Marian, since our daughter and grandkids moved to the Atlanta GA area 6 years ago, we have made the trip to see them from the Dallas area 4 to 6 times a year and always stayed at the Diamond Jacks casino in Vicksburg. This week we looked for pictures of the flooding in Vickburg and found plenty on your blog. Thank you so much for the pictures and links you have posted. As the flooding gets worse, hopefully, you will post more pictures showing the impact on DJs. Of course, we will look at and appreciate all the pictures you post. Our hearts go out to the wonderful people of Vicksburg and the State of Mississippi during these difficult time. Leland Payne
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your comment Leland. As long as I can get in and take pictures I will keep posting them. With the closures of highways north and south of town, I'm glad I got pix when I did. I do not live far from Diamond Jacks and will keep you posted. AmeriStar is still opened and has a nice hotel as well but not on the riverfront. Riverwalk Casino where my daughter is a supervisor, the MS river is inches from the building and parking lot. They are operating on a day to day basis now. Thanks so much for coming by.
