Park Closed - Wild Boars?

Yesterday we drove by the overlook and saw that no one was at the Riverfront Park! As I exited the overlook the gate to the right was locked.  I later found out that wild boars was reported crossing the MS River near the Riverfront Park yesterday morning, forcing the evacuation of people using the playground and picnic facilities. My husband has killed a wild hog up in the Delta and I have been trying to shoot me one and never in my wildest dreams thought they could be 8 blocks from our house or closer.  Got my .270 loaded and waiting for them! :)

At the foot of Lee Street not far from our home, Golding Barges Lines offices that was built on a raised hill, is completely surrounded by water now.

The most photographed building in town, MS & Yazoo Valley RR Station, slowing going underwater.

The water is almost halfway up the hill at the lower end of downtown Washington Street.

A closed street sign has been moved again one more block into town.  Highway 61 North and South at the Big Black River towards Grand Gulf Nuclear Power Plant at Port Gibson, MS, is closed. The flood wall and gates are still holding back the flood waters on the upper part of town.

As you can see from this old photo back in 1927, no flood wall had been built at the City Front.  The Great Flood of 2011 will crest here May 19 at 57.5 feet.  The 1927 crest was 56.2 feet.  Flood stage is 43 feet.

  2. Glad to hear you have the .270 loaded. Can't be too careful when there are water snakes, alligators and wild boars all looking for a high spot.

This Spring seems to be setting all kinds of weather related records everywhere. Hope any additional rain doesn't add up to very much in your part of the country.
