Old Man On The Wall

Gregory Brewer had a very proud moment today!  He got this old man on the wall!

What a nice buck!  The mount is awesome.

He shot it in God's country in Flora Mississippi on 12/22/19 at 1:30 pm sitting on a tree in the rain.  Check out that smile!

My congratulations to Gregory on a very nice buck in our great wild and wonderful Mississippi outdoors!  A buck to treasure with fond memories for the rest of his life!

Up On The Rooftop!

Megan Resoff of Kodiak, Alaska posted this recently on Facebook and wanted to share it with you, if you did not see it.

She said her dad heard noises on his roof today and the neighbor told him, hey you have a deer on your roof.  Thanks to his neighbor for the picture.

"Up On The Rooftop, Click, Click, Click."

The deer got down safely because his back neighbors yard is leveled to his roof.

Father Of My Children Died Early This Morning

Early this morning I received a call from my daughter that her Dad, Jesse Aaron Boyd, Jr., passed away in his sleep.  We were married for 14 years and had five children together; four daughters and a son that passed away with lung disease 19 hours after birth.  This picture was taken while we were dating.  He was 86 years old, never remarried and was a devout Catholic.  He will be missed by the whole family.  Rest in peace, Jesse.

Jesse A. Boyd, Jr., died Wednesday, March 18, 2020.  He was 86. He was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School (Class 1952).  Jesse was employed by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was the son of the late Jesse A. Boyd, Sr., and Minnie Miles Boyd.  He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, William David Boyd.  Survivors include his daughters, Theresa Bryant, Kathleen Day, Debra Seage of Magee, MS and Marian Nicholas of Fredericksburg, VA; six granddaughters, three grandsons, and four great-grandsons.  A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2020, at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Father Rusty Vincent officiating. Fisher-Riles Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wyoming Trail Cam Video

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has been using remote trail cameras to assist in wildlife monitoring activities for at least the last decade. The wolf monitoring program uses remote cameras specifically to monitor wolf pack composition, including pup presence and numbers. The presence of additional wildlife captured on screen is likewise added to databases that aid the Department in monitoring these species.

Poachers Conspire & Illegally Killed Nearly 100 Turkeys

A group of South Mississippians believed to have killed nearly 100 turkeys during the 2019 season have been charged and arrested. These arrests follow an 11-month investigation by the
Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) Conservation Officers resulting in approximately 280 wildlife violations being issued to 14 different subjects.
The following individuals have been arrested:
  • Kenneth Ray Britt, (39 of Wesson, MS); charged with 142 wildlife violations.
  • Tony Grant Smith, (25 of Wesson, MS); charged with 68 wildlife violations.
  • Allen Shelton Morgan, (48 of Brookhaven, MS); charged with 28 violations.
  • Breanna Jeanine McKay, (26 of Wesson, MS); charged with 5 violations.
This group is believed to be responsible for poaching nearly 100 turkeys and trespassing on 15 properties in Claiborne, Copiah, Franklin, Jefferson, and Lincoln counties. It was discovered during the investigation that the illegal activities were not limited to Mississippi. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is also conducting an investigation of the illegal out-of-state hunts.
“This is the most blatant disregard for Mississippi’s conservation laws I have seen in my thirty-three years of service with this Agency,” says Colonel Steve Adcock.  “The primary mission of the MDWFP Law Enforcement Bureau is to detect and hold accountable those persons who jeopardize our rich hunting heritage by committing lawless acts such as these.”

Jack's Awesome Turkey Trophy

Jack Faulkner killed a trophy of a lifetime recently in Monroe County, Smithville, Mississippi.  This is a domestic turkey called a Royal Palm and one of the few turkeys not primarily selected for meat production.  It is best known as an ornamental bird with a unique appearance, largely white with a band of metallic black.

He should definitely have this beautiful bird mounted and the good news is...it will not count towards his three bag limit.

Check out the shadow from his hat on the tree...looks like a bird and who has who?  My congratulations to this young man making some fond memories that will last a lifetime in our great wild and wonderful Mississippi outdoors!

Awesome Artwork By Bill Worrell

This is a shout-out for my Facebook friend, Bill Worrell.  I met Bill in Santa Fe, New Mexico through my former daughter and son-in-law back in September 2007 at their home outside Santa Fe.  Happy to say I even danced with him during a celebration of renewing their wedding vows of 10 years.  I have also been to his art studio in Santa Fe.  I have blogged about him several times and this is one of the links.  I love his artwork and I'm so glad I got to meet him.  He is a very humble man!

While ancient Egyptian workers were building the first pyramid, primitive people across the ocean were living in rock shelters along the Lower Pecos River and the Middle Rio Grand River. They had already lived in these shelters for 6,000 years. When Moses crossed the Red Sea and led the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage some of the Lower Pecos River pictographs were already 200 years old. The most famous of the Trans Pecos pictographs is the White Shaman Mural. It was painted about the time Jesus was being crucified. The Trans-Pecos pictographs are the oldest known pictorial art in North America and are considered to be among the world’s most important ancient art. Since 1979 this has been the primary source of my artistic inspiration.

Not Your Average Hunter

Thorp, Washington:
Gordon Blossom is not the average hunter.
"I always say I'm growing old. Now I change that. I am old,” Gordon says.
He's nearly 104 years old, and he's been hunting for almost a century.
He tells Action News he loves the outdoors.
"I think I was 10 years old when my folks bought me a .22 single shot."
He says the shells for the gun cost about 15 cents at the time.
"In those days, a dime would get you a pretty good meal,” Gordon says.
His parents made him work for the money.
"I think it was five rabbits that I had to get with each box of shells before they'd give me the 15 cents to get another box."
Ever since then, Gordon has been hunting and achieving the goals he sets for himself.
He has shot three elk in the last four years.
"I just love to hunt,” he says.
When asked why he loves it so much, he says, “It seems like every time you go, there's something unexpected and it makes you feel good."
Gordon says he loves life and looks forward to each day.
"It's just nice to be alive.”
He says the secret to living a long life is having good friends.
"Make friends and have friends and once you get a friend keep him."
My congratulations to Gordon Blossom on harvesting his elk at nearly 104 years old!  Not sure that I will be hunting that long but I do love hunting in our great Mississippi outdoors!

Mississippi River Above Flood Stage @ Vicksburg, MS

I went by the Louisiana Circle yesterday to take pictures of the swollen Mississippi River at Vicksburg looking towards Delta Point in the curve of the MS River.  You can also see the WaterView Casino/Hotel and the entrance to the Yazoo Diversion Canal and the Port of Vicksburg.

This is looking towards the bridges at Vicksburg.  Today's plot forecast of the MS River is 47.97 ft. with a -0.18ft drop.  Tomorrow's forecast is 47.50 ft.  This time last year the river stage was 50.59 ft.  The flood stage is 43 feet.

This is looking down towards the Vicksburg Riverfront Park which has been closed because of the hill sliding into the MS River from all the recent rains almost every week.

The picture was taken from the side top stairs of the Jesse Brent Lower Mississippi River Museum of the riverboat "America" making her debut for the first time this year.

America will return next Thursday, March 12th with the American Harmony cruise ship.

This picture was taken looking down towards the Catfish Row Children's Art Park. You can also see the Vicksburg Riverfront Murals on the floodwall.  America is moored in the Yazoo Diversion Canal for a full day of sightseeing for her passengers.

I really like this skull mount that Daniel Brower of Kenner, Louisiana has in his home.  It is made of pecky cypress wood and looks really great.  An eye-catching and different way to show off your harvests in our great wild outdoors!
