Eat Crow?

Kolton Cook and his hunting friend of Holly Springs, MS, shot 53 crows over the weekend.  I did not know that you can eat crows.  Someone commented that they marinate the breast then wrap them in bacon and put it on the grill.

Another comment made that it takes skill in killing crows and it's not about a meal.  It's about selective harvesting to reduce crop predation.  

One other comment said - Good job killing the crop of those turkey nest robbers.  He said a lot of times calling hen notes with a turkey caller, the crows will fly in looking for a nesting area.  

My congratulations to both hunters in our great wild and wonderful Mississippi outdoors!  You learn something new every day.  You eat what you kill!

An Old Squirrel In Mississippi

Missing My Blogging/Hunting Friend

It's still hard to believe that my blogging/hunting friend, Rex Dean Howell, has passed away.  He was only 62 years old and died on January 31, 2021, the last day of hunting season in Mississippi.  His Deer Camp Blog (a satirical periodical) is silent now but I can go back reliving all his stories and memories at the famous Christmas Place Plantation Hunting Club on the edge of the Mississippi Delta. 

The picture above was taken most likely in September during a work weekend and had taken time to relax and enjoy the moment.  This is one of my favorite pictures with Rex.  Just before this picture was taken, Rex put the t-shirt on that was given to us by my former stepdaughter, Karen, and hubby, Ron, co-owner of Artisans in Santa Fe, NM.  He was pleased to get it and of course, had to get a picture of him wearing it.

Winter Weather Finally Melting Away

We have had a whole week of sleet, ice, and snow.  Lights went out, water at a dribble but we are still here.  Lights back on. Stores are out of the basic needs.  Eighteen-wheelers bumper to bumper on I-20 west here in my hometown of Vicksburg that can't get to stores to deliver the goods.  Gas stations are out of gas.  A complete nightmare but conditions will be improving in the next day or so and temps will be back up in the '60s.  I haven't seen weather like this since '89 when I re-married in '88 and living in my second husband's home.  Here are a couple of pictures that were taken from my apartment on the 3rd floor of a tree that was iced over in front of my window.

Yesterday, my Granddaughter Victoria Leigh sent me this picture on my phone and said she is ready for the Olympics and a pro skier now.  Way to go, Victoria!

Historical Snow Storm & Ice In Hometown Of Vicksburg

My hometown of Vicksburg, MS, is having a major historical event.  It is not over with and another wintry event is coming this way again bring freezing rain and ice.  I was lucky to have electricity with the first round but not sure with the second round coming in today.  We will see.  Actually, most of the southern states from New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee heading east are getting slam dunk with this unprecedented weather.  Looks like 2021 is getting off to a bad start as well.  

In the photo above the trucks are at a standstill.  What a mess.  I only live a half-block from I-20.  Where the red cab truck to the left and the brown building, I turn there to go home on the south frontage road.  This picture was most likely taken from the Wisconsin bridge from above.

I will be glad when we can get back to some kind of normalcy since we are not having mail delivered or trash pick-up because of the treacherous condition with Vicksburg filled with hills and hollers.

Hometown on Lockdown

Looks like my hometown of Vicksburg, MS, is on lockdown (to support emergency response efforts) per Mayor. No one can be out on the roads in the city limits from 12 noon today until 12 noon tomorrow. We have a lot of snow here with hills and hollers. Still have electricity and that's a blessing.

Some pictures I took out front and outback at the apartment complex where I live for now. It's still snowing at noon.

Please stay off the roads unless it is absolutely necessary. If you must leave the house, wear multiple layers, take extra blankets, and bottled water. If you have a mechanical failure or accident, it could be a while before emergency assistance can reach you.

Here is the status of operations in the City:

1) Clinton Parkway bridge is closed until Tuesday morning.

2) I-20 is basically impassable and traffic is blocked EastBound near the Natchez Trace with cars backed up to Bolton due to mechanical failures.

3) City streets are experiencing significant ice cover. Public Works is working to keep major thoroughfares clear, but melting agents are less effective as temperatures drop to the low 20’s.

4) CPD and CFD are attempting to get people home if they become stranded. Interstate travelers are being directed to local lodging until the roads clear.

No. 2 is about my hometown area and only live 1/2 block from I-20.

A Newborn Fawn

 

Justin Hoffman said while scanning a cornfield with the binoculars early one June, I spotted a doe, a yearling, and this newborn fawn. As I watched, the doe started kicking at last year's fawn, ultimately chasing it across two fields and out of sight.

It left the newborn, which I photographed from a distance with the zoom. I've always wondered what that blood trickle is on its face is. A mosquito bite perhaps?

EDIT - I should add. This is normal behavior for whitetail deer. A doe needs to banish its yearling in order to nurture its newborn. This is a yearly occurrence and is done to ensure, or at least increase, the chances of survival. A yearling will attract the attention of predators, which would be lights out for a new fawn(s). So, this isn't a sad image. It is new life.

I loved sitting by the campfire at the famous Christmas Place Plantation Hunting Club on Christmas Road near Eden, Mississippi.

Enjoyed sitting around talking.  Herschel (Rex's Dad) and Bobby (striped shirt) are gone now.

Riding the gator together going to the North Cornfield Stand.  I asked Rex how he found me and he said on a deer forum.  He saw a post I had made from my website address (A Dixie Lady Deer Hunter) and came and signed my guestbook on January 29, 2007.  I always thank the person who signs my guestbook and that is how our friendship began.

We Will Go To Camp

Last weekend my dad (Mark) and I (John) took Carson to his hunting camp (Christmas Place Plantation & Hunting Club). The whole way down there we talked about Rex (my hunting friend of Deer Camp Blog) and all the great times that we have had. While putting our things up after we arrived, dad looked over to the corner of the room. All of Rex’s hunting gear was stacked there just as he left it. Dad paused for a minute and then he said something that I will never forget. He said after Mrs. Peggy died everyone asked where we will go. Rex said we will go to camp. After Mr. Hershel died everyone asked where will we go. Rex said that we will go to camp. That is where he is right now. He is at camp with Mr. Hershel, Mrs. Peggy, Mr. Bobby, and all the other members that have gone before us. They are sitting around the council fire. I pray that when we all leave this earth that we too get to go to camp.

My Hunting Friends ~ Rex & Mark ~ January 2019

This picture was taken in January 2019 at the famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club where I got a doe after not being able to hunt that morning because of a storm.  Picture of me with my hunting friend, Rex, and his best friend, Mark.  Here is the story of my hunt and a picture of me with Rex and my doe.  

Rex and I with my muddy doe that went down a steep hill and had to be drugged out by Rex and Tim Crosby.
