In Memory Of Tricia My Former Next-Door Neighbor

My former next-door neighbor, Patricia "Tricia" Reid, moved to Columbia, SC, about 5 years ago to be close to her son and his family. She was living in a complex that ended up her having bedbugs. A week ago, she moved into a lovely apartment building where the above picture was taken and her last shot.  

She is responsible for my blogging. I used to read her blog, 

Tricia Dishes, and thought, why don't I start a blog? I enjoy deer hunting, so this is how this blog started. It was a website at one time, and later I transferred it into a blog called Marian's Hunting Stories, etc., so my website was called A Dixie Lady Deer Hunter. I still have it, but I post mainly hunting memes, etc.

It was so sad to hear from her son, Christopher, that she had passed away sometime Monday morning in her sleep.  

Imagine they will bury her here in Vicksburg since she most likely will be buried next to her husband, David. If so, I will post her obituary here at a later date.

August 18, 2022 (Christopher Reid) Son

Hello again, all. This is Christopher once again. I wanted to update you since a few folks have reached out asking about service and funeral arrangements. My mother wanted to be cremated, so today, we worked with the funeral home to make these arrangements. In light of this, there will be no immediate services for now. Still, we will plan to hold a celebration of her life sometime in the next few months, most likely one here in Columbia, SC, and another in Vicksburg, MS. We will make sure to update everyone once we get some details hammered out. Thank you all for your kind words and memories. It's so lovely to see the love for our mom.

Patricia Reid was born February 4, 1954, in Vicksburg, MS, where she lived most of her life. She died peacefully in her sleep on August 15, 2022, in Columbia, SC.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Christopher and Katie Reid of Columbia, SC, and their kids Caleb (12) and Safi (5), her daughter and son-in-law Erica Reid Gerdes and Fuzzy Gerdes of Chicago, IL, and her sister Linda Antoine of Vicksburg, MS. Tricia was preceded in death by her husband David in 2007 and her parents George and Juanita Bane.

Tricia loved her family, friends, classic rock, Jason Momoa, and all animals--especially cats. Called Mama Reid by many, she and David provided a safe space in their home for many friends of Christopher and Erica in Vicksburg. in the 80s and 90s. They were especially known for their New Year's bonfires and for taking their kids to see live music.

During the last week of her life, Tricia made many new friends and ate many delicious meals. She was excited about the future.

Christopher and Erica take comfort in that their parents are now reunited and are likely making each other laugh, which was their favorite activity in life.

A memorial will be held at a later date.

Bear Cub Transported to Rehab Facility After Hit By Vehicle

Units from the Warren County Sheriff's Office responded to a report from a driver who said they had hit a bear cub on Saturday at about 4 p.m on Highway 465 near Eagle Lake.

It occurred while the area was experiencing torrential rain.

Sheriff's Department units and Lt. Lee Harvey of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks arrived on the scene.

The bear cub was recovered by Harvey and transported to a wildlife rehabilitation expert.  Sheriff Martin Pac said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Velvet Buck Season Permits On Sale For September Hunt

 

In the 2022 Legislative Season, House Bill 1035 was passed, establishing a velvet buck season in Mississippi. To participate in this season, hunters must obtain a special Velvet Season Permit. These permits will be available to purchase on August 1, 2022, at anywhere you can purchase a hunting and fishing license.

Here’s what you need to know to be ready to hunt this September:

When: September 16-18, 2022

Where: Private Lands Only

What: Only legal bucks for the respective Deer Management Unit may be harvested. Find your Deer Management Unit here.

With: Archery Only – Longbows, recurves, compound bows, and crossbows. There is no minimum or maximum draw weight. There is no minimum length arrow. Fixed or mechanical broadheads may be used.

Price: Unless exempt or have a lifetime license, all hunters must possess a valid Velvet Season Permit. The cost of the permit for residents is $10.00. For non-residents, this permit is included in your $50.00 deer permit.

Additional Rules to note:

• Bag Limit – The bag limit is one (1) legal buck, and this buck will count towards your annual antlered deer bag limit.
• Mandatory Harvest Reporting – Hunters (including license-exempt hunters) must report their harvest by 10:00 p.m. the day of harvest. Hunters can report via the MDWFP Smartphone App or MDWFP web portal.
• Mandatory CWD Sampling – All harvested bucks must be submitted for CWD sampling to an MDWFP CWD Drop-off freezer or to an MDWFP participating taxidermist within 5 days of harvest.

Bear Cub Hit By Car On 465 North of Town

 

Saturday afternoon about 4 p.m., a driver on 465 near Eagle Lake struck a bear cub on the roadway.

The driver stopped and returned to find the bear Cub, who it appears did not survive the hit. MDWFP was contacted along with Warren County Sheriff’s deputies.

Before officials could arrive, the driver alerted them the bear had survived the impact and was coming out of it.

Lee Harvey with MDWFP took control of the scene and established a safe perimeter from the cub. It was unclear if the mother was still in the area or if the injured cub would lash out. Several people were asked to move from the area.

The Vicksburg Daily News will update on the condition of the cub as more information becomes available.

MS Man Pulled a Massive 104lb. Catfish From River

A  Brookhaven man Christopher Halley pulled a massive 104lb. Catfish from the Mississippi River at Natchez on a trot line over the weekend while learning how to fish with his mother-in-law, Sandra Case, and father-in-law, David Case.  My congratulations on a catch of a lifetime.  Some good eating for sure for the whole family.
