Moose Looses
According to The Anchorage Daily News, dated, January 23, 2012, an 85-year-old Alaskan woman, used a grain shovel to fend off an agitate moose that was stomping her husband.
George Murphy says his wife saved his life.
Her husband, 82-year-old pilot, who flew for three decades for the Iditarod Trail Dog Race, was hiking with his golden retrievers near the Willow airport. He saw the moose and dove in the snow, but the moose started stomping him.
His wife, Dorothea, who is 5 feet tall and weighs 97 pounds, grabbed a big shovel and hit the moose in the body and head. She then ran for help, and Murphy was rushed by medical helicopter to an Anchorage hospital. He was in good condition Monday with a 6-inch-gash to his head and a big wound on his left leg from the attack.

Working On The River
After we left the hospital Friday afternoon for my husband's appointment we drove to the overlook again to see if there was any river traffic coming our way. In the distance I saw something white while sitting in our truck. I zoomed in and was surprised to see it was a towboat coming in. Usually, there are so many leaves on the trees that you could not see the river at this point. The towboat was the M/V Louis Develle. In front of it was another towboat getting ready to make the wide turn in the MS River. It was the M/V John H. MacMillan, Jr. towboat with a very large load.
I climbed up on the hill at the overlook to get a wide angle view of both towboats coming in.
The M/V John H. MacMillan, Jr. towboat pushing a huge load of barges.
I drove down to the Vicksburg Riverfront Park to get a closer view of the M/V John H. MacMillan, Jr., as it made the wide turn in the MS River at the park.
M/V John H. MacMillan, Jr. as it was passing by the Riverfront Park. The towboat was built in 1964 by St. Louis Shipbuilding, Inc., St. Louis, MO and owned by American Transportation Co., St. Louis, MO.

Here comes the M/V Louis Develle towboat.

The sun was so bright that I decided to get behind a tree to block the sunlight and got this neat picture of the M/V Louis Develle towboat heading under the bridges.

It's My Birthday Today!
I received this pretty wildlife Birthday Card from my deer classmate, Kay, who lives in California and wanted to share it with you on my special day! It says ~
What do you know?
Another birthday is here...
What else can we say but,
Oh deer, oh deer, oh deer!"
The name of the picture on the card is named, "Deer and Pines" by Joe Hautman. Joseph Hautman was born into a family of artists and was instilled early with a love of nature. He studied art at the University of Minnesota, but switched to physics and eventually received a doctorate in theoretical physics from the University of Michigan. Well into a career in research, Joe was encouraged by two of his brothers, who are wildlife artists, to go back to his early interest in painting. He decided to compete in the prestigious Federal Duck Stamp competition and, after winning, retired from his scientific career to paint full time. His richly detailed and impeccably accurate wildlife paintings are a meld of his scientific mind with his creative and artistic skills. (Leanin' Tree)

A Windy Blooming Day
While I was out yesterday running errands, I decided to go by the Louisiana Overlook to see if there was any river traffic and it looked like I had just missed this one going north. I thought it was moving but was just sitting there and most likely waiting for grocery supplies, etc.
When I looked south towards the bridges a very dark cloud was forming. In fact, we were under a tornado watch for the afternoon and evening but came through just fine.
I was lucky to see a boat making it's way north as I pulled up and got out to take this picture of the "City of New Orleans" towboat. It was not pushing barges...not sure what it was...but it looked like a working platform of some kind.
A scenic view of the City of New Orleans getting closer to the turn in the bend of the MS River.
I zoomed in to let you see how choppy the MS River was with the wind blowing so hard yesterday.
It has been so unseasonably warm lately that the Japanese Magnolia trees are in bloom. Yesterday it was 73 degrees in the middle of winter! This house is located on Drummond Street, not far from our home.
Also, our Japanese Magnolia tree in front of our home is putting out blooms. It's crazy weather for sure!

Bigdogs's Buck
Dr. Walter E. Johnston, Jr., our doctor, took this very nice buck at Old River north of town on January 2, 2012. He has had a very good hunting season! You can see how happy he is to have harvested this very nice buck after taking pictures of it in our great outdoors. Our congrats to a great physician, an excellent hunter and an actor who plays "Big Mike" (a dance hall proprietor) in Gold In The Hills melodrama. You go Dr. Johnston!

Vicksburg Youth On The Hunt
Drake Douglas shot his second buck of the season - and second in less than a week - while hunting with his father, Shea, on New Year's Day at the family hunting camp in Scooba. The 8-pointer was taken with a .270 rifle. Drake's first buck was a 7-pointer that he shot on December 28 with the same rifle.
My congrats to Drake on his two bucks in our great wild outdoors!

Happy Birthday Kathy!
Today is my daughter, Kathleen Love Day "Kathy's" birthday and she is 46 years old. Kathy is the only daughter out of my four daughters that love to hunt. Debra (with John) and Suzi (with me) have gone to the woods but have not picked up a gun to shoot a deer.
Here is a picture of Kathy taken down at Homewood Hunting Club in Claiborne County, when we were members. I really enjoy hunting with Kathy and have great memories of all our hunts!
Wishing my daughter a beautiful kind of day that she deserves for being such a wonderful person.
Have a Wonderful Birthday Kathy! Love you so much! MOM xxoo

An Old Cemetery Statue and A Camel
On January 14, 2012, I met my sister and nephew at the Vicksburg Cedar Hill Cemetery to visit our brother/father's grave. It was his birthday and he would have been 67 years old. Before we left I took the picture above and did not know that I had captured a bird-in-flight until I downloaded it on my computer. Below, my nephew showed us the spot where "Douglas", the camel, headstone was in the cemetery. I have heard about "Douglas" but did not know the actual place of the headstone. It so happened that my nephew helped put the marker in the ground to commemorate a "war hero" of the Civil War that was fought during the Siege of Vicksburg.

Post Number 2,000
Today, I’m proud to say that this post is number 2,000!
I want to give a lot of credit to my mentor and good friend, Rex, over at Deer Camp Blog, also a native Mississippian, for encouraging/challenging me to keep blogging back in January 2007. I started my blog in November 2006 and made only four posts and quickly loss interest. I had a website at the time called, A Dixie Lady Deer Hunter and just recently made it into a blog. Rex came by at that time and signed my guestbook. I wrote him back and thanked him and realized he had a blog also. He then made a point for me to keep my blog going and told me that I would be an inspiration to other lady hunters wanting to take up the sport.
Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club - September 17, 2011
It has indeed been a very rewarding experience blogging and I've met so many hunters, men and women alike. Blogging has also served as an outlet for me since I am a Caregiver for my husband who has numerous health issues. Now, I’m looking forward to reaching a new goal of 3,000 and making “new” blogging friends along the way.
My thanks to everyone taking the time to stop by for a visit to my site. I really do appreciate you!

A Monster Missouri Buck
I get the Outdoor Life Magazine via my email and in it was a picture and a story behind a monster buck that was taken in Missouri back on November 4 during archery season. The lucky hunter was, Bill Pulse, getting an incredible 23-point buck.
As the story goes, Bill is a father of 3 boys (ages, 5, 7 and 18) and does not have the luxury of being a trophy hunter. His main objective is to fill the freezer.
He is a firefighter/paramedic and has a good amount of time to hunt the woods outside Parkville, Missouri, near the Kansas border. He had already killed two does and now the rut was on and was waiting for a nice buck to walk out.
On November 4, he was perched in a tree in the bottom of a wooded bowl and had already seen two nice bucks earlier in the year and was going to try and draw them in by rattling. He soon spotted a buck up the ridge and then another smaller one but then out of the corner of his eye spotted a huge tine 40 yards away in the timber.
He blew into his grunt tube and urged the buck into rage. The deer thrashed a tree and then came in grunting.
"I've never seen something so nasty," he said "I had no idea how big this deer was, other than it was the biggest deer I'd ever seen in my life."
The buck came in on a line and Pulse drew his bow, a Darton that was made in 1988 (Pulse fondly calls it his BowTech Banjo).
He picked a softball-sized opening in the brush below his stand and when the buck tromped through it, he squeezed the trigger on his release.
But the arrow hit a branch and sounded a harmless 'thud.' It was one of the most depressing sounds Pulse had ever heard.
"My heart hit my shoes when I saw my arrow in the tree," he said.
But the buck didn't totally spook. He started making his way up the ridge, while Pulse knocked another arrow. At 40 yards Pulse fired again as the buck quartered off. This time his air was true and he hit the
deer square. After a short tracking job he found the buck dead, 40 yards up the ridge.
"He looked like a rocking chair tipped over," Pulse said.
While the deer's rack is incredible, his body size is perhaps even more impressive. Pulse never got his buck weighed, but you can see just how enormous he is in this picture below. For reference, Pulse stand 5'10" and weighs about 200 pounds.
He had a buddy to help him get the deer out of the woods and quartered because in two days the Missouri Youth Hunt was coming up and he wanted to take his seven-year-old son, Garrett hunting. As you can see below, like father like son with the camo face, his son took down a 9 point buck. This was Garrett's first deer!
My congrats to both the father and son in our great outdoors! What an awesome and terrific hunting stories to tell for a lifetime!

Happy Birthday My Dear Friend
Today is my BESTEST friend in the whole wide world's birthday! Jeanette, on the left, and Janice (sister) share the same birthday, being twins. Also, wishing Janice a very Happy Birthday!
I met Jeanette back in the early 70's while we were working together at the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District. She and I have become the closest of friends and I'm so fortunate to have had such a good friend in my life. We have shared tears of joy together, sadness together, and have leaned on each other throughout the years. She has always been there for me and we share a very close bond. Her oldest son, Charlie, was born on my birthday and the middle son, John Kirk, is my Godchild. The baby bed that I used for my four daughters (my mother gave as a gift), she used for her three sons who are college graduates, married with their own families to raise. She was also my Matron of Honor at my second marriage. I consider myself pretty lucky and blessed with her friendship. May your birthday bring you lovely memories, joyful moments, and glorious dreams. You deserve it Jeanette! Thanks many times over for being my friend. It means the world to me! With love and hugs! Marian

An Afternoon Hunt
When I got out of my hunting club, Jasper Bottom, after 25 years, I had my deer stand moved to my granddaughter and her hubby's land south of town. Have hunted it several times but have never seen a deer off of it. My grandson, Carl, did see one but missed it a couple of years ago. Yesterday, was the same, no deer, but it was alright. I enjoy just sitting on my stand and watching nature go by. I only saw two squirrels playing and a lot of birds and that was it. While on the stand I did hear a few shots from some lucky hunters. Bob, my husband, hunted on the edge of a creek bed on the opposite side of the land in his one-man stand. He did not see anything either but we both enjoyed a sunny afternoon hunt. Afterwards, we visited with family and watched my great grandson, Ian, roasting marshmallows with his two playmates on the front porch. He was having a blast!
In front of me...
Where the squirrels were playing going up and down this tree in front of me.
To the right side of me...
Behind me where I walked in...
Looking through my scope hoping for the squirrels to come down and play some more! ;)

My Photo Published
Marian Love Phillips had just finished hunting and, while waiting for her ride, decided to shoot a photo of the night sky over MS Delta.
I was happy to see my recent sunset picture published in our paper, The Vicksburg Post. It was taken on December 28, 2011, after hunting and seeing two nice bucks and eight does. We were invited to hunt at the famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club (Deer Camp Blog) after Christmas and as usual had a wonderful time hunting with the Howell family and their friends.
The Vicksburg Post has a criteria for accepting photos submitted by their readers. It should be current and of interest to the public, either because of their subject matter or their oddity, or the photographic skill shown.
I'm always humbled by the fact that they like my picture enough to publish it in our hometown paper!

Vicksburg Youth On The Hunt
Emily Phillips, 12, killed this 6-point buck while hunting with her father in southern Warren County on December 28. She made the 60-yard shot with a .243 rifle. The buck had a 14-inch inside spread, 20-inch main beams and weighed 220 pounds. Emily is the daughter of Chad and Zena Phillips.
Hannah Wilder shot her first deer in Claiborne County. The 100-pound doe was taken with a 7mm-08 from 30 yards away. Pictured with Hannah is her brother, Laken Wilder.
My congrats to our two young huntress in our great outdoors!
