Happy 3rd Birthday Oliver!

Today is my Great Nephew, Oliver Love's 3rd Birthday!  He had a really nice one with a big red fire engine truck showing up in front of his house today.  He got to blow the horn, siren and played with the big water hose. What a treat for a little 3-year-old!  Below are some pictures I took at his Birthday Party with cake, ice cream and presents galore!  I love you, Oliver!  Great Aunt Missy

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday, dear Oliver, Happy Birthday to you!

Happy 19th Birthday, Lucy!

My Granddaughter, Lucy, turns 19 years old today and I want to wish her a very Happy Birthday!

When Lucy was younger she was in an art class at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center and later her art work was displayed permanently at the Catfish Row Children's Art Park in downtown Vicksburg, MS, near the waterfront.

I'm so proud of Lucy and next year around Spring she will give me my 3rd Great Grandchild. Below is a picture and link to her story that I posted back in August 2007.  I love you very much, Lucy and I hope you have a very Happy Birthday and many more to come! Gran Gran

This is Lucy today!

M/V Capt. Buck Lay Coming Around The Bend

Around 10:10 this morning the M/V Capt. Buck Lay made a sharp turn in the Mississippi River bend at Vicksburg, MS, called Delta Point.  I took these pictures from the Louisiana Circle heading southbound towards the two bridges.  Towboat pilots dread coming through Vicksburg southbound/northbound because of maneuvering around the sharp bend and the bridges which is a big challenge in itself.  I'm sure they breath a sigh of relief after passing through here. (Click on pictures to enlarge)

Up-close of M/V Capt. Buck Lay.

Another shot of M/V Capt. Buck Lay putting the pedal to the metal.

Heading straight for the bridges of old Hwy 80 and I-20 at Vicksburg, MS.

It does not look easy to me...

...but he made it.

You can see the scars on the pillars of the bridges from the towboats that have hit it because of the swift current of the Mighty Mississippi.  In January of this year we had a towboat to hit the bridges and some containers sunk in the MS River because it was at flood stage and the current was so treacherous that he lost control.  I'm sure it's a towboat captain's nightmare!

Video Of Riverboats By Marty Kittrell

The picture above was taken last Friday by myself of the Grand American Queen leaving town in the Yazoo Diversion Canal to the MS River northbound.  I love taking pictures of riverboats just like my Facebook friend, Marty Kittrell.  The riverboats come to our historic civil war town to tour our Vicksburg National Military Park and points of interest. Recently, he made a video of pictures taken of several riverboats that have visited our hometown. Enjoy the video below and you can see what a great photographer he truly is.

Half-A-Day Visit By The Grand American Queen

The Grand American Queen moored at our waterfront for a half-a-day of sightseeing for her passengers. Also, you can see Catfish Row Children's Art Park and splash fountain with the Vicksburg Riverfront Murals on the flood walls in my historic civil war town of Vicksburg, MS.

I placed a frame around The Grand American Queen for today!

American Queen paddlewheeler getting ready to leave town.

Taken from the rear of my truck window!

Took this picture on top of a parking lot looking down at The American Queen getting ready to leave my hometown of Vicksburg, MS.  She will not be back until November 2nd to spend a whole day.

The smoke stacks and the pilot house peeking through the tops of the trees heading south in the Yazoo Diversion Canal towards the Mississippi River to go northbound.

There she goes...

A closer look as she is northbound to MN.

Have a safe trip American Queen and we'll see you in November!

Virginia's First Hunt

Chuck Stogdill of Oskaloosa, Iowa said that Tuesday his wife, Virginia shot her first kill ever.

She wasn't raised around guns and has always feared them because of the lack of gun education, he said. He finally got a gun in her hands this past weekend and started her target shooting. She went hunting for the first time and with one shot got this rabbit.

Someone commented that you have nothing to fear but fear itself. Now you will be able to feed yourself and your family if the need arises.  But Chuck now says he fears a woman who knows how to shoot a gun!!!

Congratulations to Virginia in our great wild and wonderful outdoors.  Now you are a hunter...so be very proud of yourself!

Louisiana Deer Carcass Ban

Louisiana won't ban the importation of dead deer carcasses until March 1, after this winter's hunting season.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission pushed back the start date of the proposed ban in a Thursday meeting.  Louisiana is hoping to keep chronic wasting disease from infecting the state's deer.  The fatal disease causes deer to have tremors and other movement problems and lose weight.

Commissioners also approved an amendment allowing bone-in meat to be brought in.

The earlier proposal banned importation of any bones.  It would remain legal to bring in deboned meat, antlers, hides or deer stuffed by a taxidermist.
