A Fun Last Weekend Hunt

Bob and I got to the famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club around 3:30 Friday afternoon and got all our things put away in our (Paul's) room and sat down to visit.  Around 5:15 we looked towards the feeder and several deer had appeared. Soon a nice buck showed up to enjoy the feast!

We watched and took pictures for about 15 minutes and then the buck took off.  It was so nice that Rex invited us to come back up for the last weekend of deer season.  We had a wonderful time seeing and visiting with his Dad, his friend Dorothy, Trent, Bobby, Mark, Burney, Austin, Davin and Dean at the camp.  You can check out Bob's blog, Two Dogs Tall, for more pictures of the hunt.

He's gone!

Thankful Wishes and Hunting Trip!

My daughter, Kathy, surprised me with a beautiful birthday cake and a pretty pair of earrings.  It was a fun filled day opening birthday cards from family/friends, phone calls, flowers/balloon and lots of wishes from my Facebook and Blogger friends.  My daughter, Debra, also made us a home made meal to enjoy!  Later, Bob took me out to eat at our favorite Mexican Restaurant, El Sombrero.   I was surprised when three waiters showed up at our table and put a Mexican hat on my head and started clapping and singing Happy Birthday to me in Spanish!  The whole day was very memorable and I appreciate all of you who took the time to come by and congratulate me on my 70th.  My sincere thanks!

Today, we have been invited by our friend, Rex (Deer Camp Blog), to come deer/hog hunt at his famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club, for the last weekend of primitive weapons.  We are looking forward to our get-a-way and to visit with him and his family/friends.  It's shaping up to be a beautiful sunny weekend and hopefully we will bring back a deer plus a hog!

My 70th Birthday!

Today is my 70th Birthday which was announced in the Old Post Files of our newspaper, The Vicksburg Post.  It's hard to believe that I'm 70, but Thank The Lord that I made it this far and hope to make it to the next milestone in my life.  Have made plans to spend the day with family and go out later to celebrate.

Interesting and True

An Obituary printed in the London Times:

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
       - Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
       - Why the early bird gets the worm;
       - Life isn't always fair;
       - and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.
     He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
          I Know My Rights
          I Want It Now
          Someone Else Is To Blame
          I'm A Victim
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing

An Honor for Vicksburg

In December was an article on the front page of The Vicksburg Post about the selection of a new US quarter which makes Vicksburg almost unique - because only Vicksburg has the CAIRO!  The USS Cairo had been a commissioned federal warship less than a year when Lt. Cmdr. Thomas O. Selfridge, Jr. guided the gunboat on the Yazoo River 148 years ago in December, to clear the channel of mines and attack Confederate batteries on shore.

After helping capture Memphis, the Cairo had been dispatched to Helena, Arkansas from where it was sent to the Vicksburg theater.  The gunboat made it 16 miles from the Mississippi north of the city when two mines, or torpedoes, ripped open the hull.

No lives were lost, but the Cairo sank in 36 feet of muddy water in just 12 minutes.

Just over 100 years later, in 1964, the Cairo was raised from the mud, restored and moved to its current site at the Vicksburg National Military Park, where it attracts about 300,000 visitors a year.  The famed gunboat will receive another kind of lasting recognition this year when it is depicted on Mississippi's coin in the U.S. Mint's "America the Beautiful" set, one of five state quarters that will be issued.

Tim Kavanaugh, supervisor of the Interpretive Ranger Division and licensed tour guide for the military park stated,  "It's not a Southern coin but a United States coin.  If it wasn't for the Cairo and ships like her, they would not be distributing a U.S. coin in Mississippi."

About the Cairo:
- The Cairo was built at Mound City, Ill. and its engines were made in Pittsburgh, Penn.
- The Cairo was order in September 1861 and commissioned Jan. 15, 1862, becoming part of the Army's Western Flotilla, but commanded by Navy Lt. Nathaniel Bryant.  The ship was transferred to the U.S. Navy ownership October 1, 1862, 10 weeks before its sinking.
- A crew of 175 manned the gunboat.
- It cost $101,808 at 1861 valuation.
- The Cairo carried an armament of 14 heavy guns.  The hull and casement weighed about 350 tons.
- Its maximum speed was six knots.
- On December 12, 1862, the Cairo became the first warship ever sunk by a "torpedo," or underwater mine.
- The sunken gunboat was located in the Yazoo river in 1956, and in 1964 it was raised and subsequently restored.  It is on display at the Vicksburg National Military Park along with an adjoining museum.

Happy "45" Birthday Kathy!

Today is my daughter, Kathleen Love Boyd Day's, 45th birthday!  She is the second born of my four daughters and the only one that is a deer hunter like her mother.  Kathy works for Riverwalk Casino and is a supervisor.  She is a very sweet, compassionate and lovely daughter who is a mother to two daughters, Candace and Victoria and a son, Carl.  She is also a grandmother to my great grandsons, Tidus, who lives in Montana and Ian, who lives here in Vicksburg.  I will be baking her favorite lemon cake on her special day.  Happy Birthday Kathy, With Love and Hugs, Mom   xxoo

A Foggy Mississippi River

Yesterday afternoon, Bob and I drove over to the overlook at the Mississippi River and took this picture above of a tree that normally has so many leaves on that you can't see the bend in the river.  It looks like it was taken with black and white film. All of a sudden we saw a fog rolling in over the river.  We left and went to Diamond Jacks Casino's parking lot to get a closer view near the river's edge.

Diamond Jacks Casino's parking lot with tugboats docked near the edge of the Mighty MS River.

Fog came in so thick you could not see the river.

The Importance of Walking

Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old
to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing
   home at $7000 per month.

My grandpa started walking
five miles a day when he was 60.
    Now he's 97 years old
and we don't know where he is.

   I like long walks,
    especially when they are taken
    by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking
is so that I could hear heavy breathing again
.

I have to walk early in the morning,
before my brain figures out what I'm doing..

I joined a health club last year,
    spent about 400 bucks.
    Haven't lost a pound.
Apparently you have to go there.

Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise',
I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

The advantage of exercising every day
is so when you die, they'll say,
'Well, she looks good doesn't she.'

If you are going to try cross-country skiing,
    start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise
    the last few years,......
    just getting over the hill.

We all get heavier as we get older,
because there's a lot more information in our heads.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

   AND

Every time I start thinking too much
    about how I look,
I just find a Happy Hour
and by the time I leave,
    I look just fine.

Jeanette's Birthday

Today is my bestest friend (in the whole wide world) birthday! She and I have been friends for over 40 years. We both worked for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and she's still there working part-time for the Vicksburg District.  We have been through a lot of stuff together and have cried on each others shoulders through the years.  She has three grown sons, who are all college graduates and doing very well in life.  Her three sons and my four daughters even shared the same baby bed that my Mom and Dad bought for my first born, Theresa.  I'm so fortunate to have her as my dearest friend and I want to wish her the very best on her "60" Birthday. May she have many more birthdays to come!

Happy Birthday Jeanette!

Hunting At Kennison Creek

Got to the camp around 8:45 and waited inside for my brother-in-law, Chris, to come out of the woods.  He has a Geo-Tracker and we took off headed to a deer stand near the power line on the east side.  I did not know that they had land behind the camp and also off of Hwy 61 South to the east and west.  He put me on a deer stand and he hunted down from where Bob had hunted last week.  We got off around 2:00 and neither one of us saw a deer so we headed back to the camp for a short break,  The next stand he put me on was on the west side.  As we were driving almost a mile and a half back up into the woods we jumped a young buck that was lying near a four-wheeler that they keep in this area, next to the swamp, to pull deer out if it gets too muddy.  He put me in a tent stand that was built up on a platform attached to a trailer.  You could also drive your 4-wheeler on it if you planned to move the whole thing to another area he said.  Chris and another guy built it and was in a very good area with lots of acorns.  Chris left and went to the other side of the swamp to hunt.  He said he saw a shooter right before dark, that was feeding, but could not get him to come closer by using his call.  It was too far to shoot and was in a food plot in the distance.  I did not see anything but around 5:20, I heard a twig snap but nothing walked out.  I did see some ducks flying near me and enjoyed watching them.  There is a slough that the duck hunters hunt and it's plentiful.  He invited my husband and I both, within the next couple of weeks, to hunt for a day during muzzleloading season that will last until the end of January.  It sure was great to be outside in the wild outdoors!

To the right...deer cross right behind the first pole.

Nice size deer scrape.

Buck leaving a scent on branch above the scrape.

Looking out in front of me where I saw the ducks.  Noticed the bent over tree to the far left.

To the left...

To the right where I came in.

Behind me.

Chris took a picture of me with his camera standing beside the stand and you can see what I was talking about.  It's somewhat different!

Heading To The Woods!

My brother-in-law, Chris, has invited me to hunt with him today at his deer camp, Kennison Creek, on the Big Black River in Claiborne County.  I am looking forward to enjoying the day with him and hopefully to see/harvest a deer.  I'll be taking my camera and will post pictures tomorrow of my deer hunt.  Wish me luck!

On Our Brother's Birthday

Today is our brother, Marion "Buster" Love's, birthday...but sadly he is not with us.  He passed away on October 31, 2010, of complications from diabetes.  My sister, Laura, and his family miss him so very much.  He would have been 66 today.  May he eternally rest in Our Dear Lord's arms!

Bear Climbs Deer Stand

As a bear was climbing up a tree stand...it was being recorded on a cell phone camera by a hunter on September 8, 2010, near Newfolden, MN.

Even if you’re not a hunter, this will give you a moment of pause. A deer hunter is up in his stand, atop a ladder. Instead of a big buck and a freezer of steaks coming around, a huge bear wanders into view and curiously begins to climb up the hunter’s ladder.

What would you do?

Would you be this cool?

Would you realize that a simple question would send the bear packing?
