Got My Santa Wish!

Dear Santa, where is that invite to the Famous Christmas Place? Marian

Posted by Rex at Deer Camp Blog on Monday, December 24, Letters to Santa!

I'm so fortunate to be on my way in the morning to the Famous Christmas Place to harvest a deer on the edge of the Mississippi Delta. It has been a wonderful year getting to know Rex, Denise (his fiancee) and his fine family and friends. Bob and I are looking forward to a fun time and bringing in 2008! I will be offline till after the New Year and wish all my friends here a safe and prosperous New Year! This is a sweetthing!

Gas Tank Info

I have been driving (legally) for a long time. One would think I would have noticed the little secret on my dash that was staring me right in the face the whole time. I didn't and I bet you probably haven't either. Quick question, what side of your car is your gas tank? If you are anything like me, you probably can't remember right away. My solution is to uncomfortably stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look. If you don't do this in your own car you definitely have done it in a borrowed or rental car. Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the gas station or put your neck at risk of uncomfort or injury. If you look at your gas gauge, you will see a small icon of a gas pump. The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the pump. If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left. If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo above). It is that simple! I don't know how you feel right now but when I found out this morning I felt cheated! Why don't the dealers share such important information with car buyers? I don't understand why this isn't in the drivers manual? I don't get why any mechanic I have ever been too or know has even thought of mentioning this to me? The only possible explanation can be that all these people probably don't even know! Go out and share the worlds best kept auto secret with your friends as this is information is way too important to be kept secret. Charming, Just Charming!

A Christmas Ride

Greg took his Dad (Bob) for a ride on John's go-cart. It was a fun afternoon with the family. After it got dark, Eleanor's brother, James, had set up a telescope in the driveway and we were able to view the planet Mars!

My step-son, Greg, took this picture coming around from the back of the house to the front.

Got my first ride in a go-cart today. My step-grandson, John Gregory, got a go-cart for Christmas. He took me for several spins around the house. It was pretty cool and lots of fun!

Under the mistletoe

It's Christmas!

Bob had a nice fire going in the fireplace when I got up!

Katie with her new toy that Santa brought her!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Eating Tips For The Holidays!

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door where they're serving cheese balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can and quickly. You can't find it any other time of the year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an 'eggnog-aholic' or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it!!!! Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand-alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do NOT have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello???

6. Under NO circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10 pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at the buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple, pumpkin and mincemeat - have a slice of each. Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

9. Did someone mention FRUITCAKE? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but AVOID IT at all cost! I mean, have SOME standards!

10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party, or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Reread tips. Start over. But hurry...January is just around the corner!!!Remember this motto to live by: 'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, 'WHOO-HOOO what a RIDE!!!'- Merry Christmas Everyone!!! - Marian and Bob

Vicksburg On The Hunt

Baylee Wallace, 13, was hunting with her dad when she made a 90-yard shot to take down a 150-pound, six-point buck. Baylee was hunting south of Vicksburg on Saturday.

Six-year-old Grayson Woodruff bagged his first deer when he used a .223 from about 50 yards. He is the grandson of David Wright. Congratulations to all our young deer hunters!

Vicksburg On The Hunt

Brett Oldenburg, 8, killed this 8-pointer using a 7mm.08. He was hunting with his dad, Johnny Oldenburg, in North Warren County.

Jon Edward King, 7, killed this nice 7-point buck on December 15 while hunting in North Warren County with his father, Eddie King. Jon Edward used a .243 to fell the deer.

Missed 10-pt. Buck!

This is Kelle Griffith who was hunting with her Dad, Andy. Kelle is 11 years old and last season harvested two does. Yay, another upcoming huntress! I took her picture while Andy and my grandson, Carl (who's 17 years old), were looking again for his deer he shot at. It was an 10-point buck off of my stand on the top field! He said around 5:00 p.m. he was getting cold and decided to come off my stand. As he was stretching, he turned to his left and saw a buck coming up out of a bottom, which probably came off of Mill Pond, which is another club next to our camp. As the buck was about to cross the road, Carl said he got the binoculars out and counted the horns and saw it was a 10-pt. He said he whistled at the deer to make him stop walking. It was a 140 yard shot but there was a lot of overhanging tree limbs from him to the deer. After he shot, he got down to look for the deer, but no luck. We all surmised after helping him look for the deer again, that the bullet was deflected by a branch. Carl was disappointed that he missed and so was I, but it was exciting that he saw a 10-point buck. I enjoyed hunting with my grandson, even though he did not get the big one, but the time spent together was priceless!

I took this picture of me while hunting. Bob and I have the same face mask, which is attached to the hat, that we use. It's made by Advantage Timber and very concealing.
This is looking to right side of the stand where I came in on the four-wheeler. A good area to hunt, but nothing walked out.

This is what I was looking out at on the left side of my stand (F-4) which is the same one I was in for the film documentary(posted Dec. 17). To the right is another camp called "Homewood" that is backed up against my camp, Jasper Bottom Hunting Club. I heard a shot off of Homewood about 5:15.

How The Fight Started!

I rear-ended a car this morning.
So there we are alongside the road and slowly the driver gets out of the car. . .
and you know how you just get sooo stressed out and life-stuff seems to get funny?
Yeah, well, I could NOT believe it . . he was a DWARF!
He storms over to my car, looks up at me and says, "I AM NOT HAPPY!"
So, I look down at him and say, "Well, which one are you then?"
. . . and that's when the fight started . . .

(This was too cute not to pass along)

A Christmas Breakfast Pizza

I want to share with you a recipe that I fix quite frequently for breakfast. It would certainly be a hit come Christmas morning with your family and loved ones. Happy Holidays!

1 pound deer sausage or bulk pork sausage

1 (8-ounce) package refrigerated crescent rolls

1 cup frozen loose-pack hash brown potatoes, thawed

1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

4 eggs, beaten

1/4 cup milk

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Pimiento (optional)

Fresh or dried oregano (optional)

Cook sausage in medium skillet until brown; drain and set aside. Separate crescent dough into 8 triangles. Place with elongated points toward center of greased 12-inch pizza pan or dish. Press bottom and sides to form crust; seal perforations. Spoon sausage over dough.

Sprinkle with hash brown potatoes and cheddar cheese. Combine eggs, milk, salt and pepper; our over sausage mixture. Bake at 375 for 25 minutes. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and bake an additional 5 minutes.

Garnish with pimiento and fresh or dried oregano. (The oregano makes the pizza) Yields 6 to 8 servings. Enjoy!

Warning - Polar Bear Attack!

These are pictures of an actual polar bear attack in Alaska. These pictures were taken while people watched and could do nothing to stop the attack! Reports from the local newspaper say that the victim should make a full recovery. This is not for the squeamish......

A Film Documentary

Cathryne and I before she left to fly back to New York, New York.

Cathryne on the deer stand filming me hunting at Jasper Bottom Hunting Club.
(An 11-point buck was harvested yesterday on the opposite side of field)

Bob and Cathryne at the Senior Center/Some Place Special Christmas Dance

(Cathryne filmed me dancing - one of my hobbies)

This weekend was an incredible one for me!

Producer, Cathryne Czubek, came to my hometown of Vicksburg, MS, to film me in my home and hunting environment. She is from New York, New York, and she came across my post recently on Kim Hiss's/FS Huntress blog. Kim is a friend of hers and has participated several times in her documentary on women and guns, a project she began in 2001.

She wanted to speak with me about my experience with hunting and my interest in sharing my story for a project. She looked at my website and blog and was very interested in my passion and involvement with firearms and hunting, and how I decided to share that (in the blog and website) with the female hunting community.

It was a wonderful experience that I shall never forget. I want to thank my mentor Rex over at Deer Camp Blog for the link to FShuntress blog, his support, encouragement and friendship; to my husband Bob (my hunting buddy), who took the time to teach me the skills of hunting in a sport that is mostly dominated by men; to Cathryne Czubek, who is exploring the passions of women and firearms through her film projects. This undoubtedly is a sweetthing!

Remembering David Reid.....

.....who never lost the melody

This is the article that Charlie Mitchell wrote about David, our next door neighbor. It is truly wonderful.

We met in elementary school.

After those days our encounters were rare and brief. They came at predictable intervals as we aged, in grocery store aisles, at back-to-school nights for our own children, reunions.

Exchanges with David Reid always went past, "Hi, how are you? Fine and you? Fine." He always had something wry, something personal, something sincere to say.

David made an impression, a good impression. He was consistently upbeat.

It was good that the Post had David on the front page a few weeks ago,"outing" him to the world for what was probably the most outlandish deed of his life. David was one of four Hinds Community College commuters from Vicksburg who in 1973 carved, in giant letters, "Remember Duane Allman" into an earthen wall along the then-new Interstate 20 near Bovina. Prompting the news story was a performance in Vicksburg by Gregg Allman, brother of the legendary guitarist who had been killed in a 1971 motorcycle wreck. The carved memorial lasted for years, becoming an icon to I-20 travelers.Gregg told David and his co-conspirators the family had seen photos and appreciated the gesture. That meant a lot.

Anybody who knows anything about music--and David knew a lot about music--will tell you that Duane Allman, though a rocker's rocker, always kept the melody, never lost it to the noise.

And so it was with David.

He was keenly intelligent, with an excellent memory, but he didn't care whether anyone knew it or not. Impressing others wasn't something he desired to do. David was as casual as the Hawaiian shirts and wide-brimmed hats that were his stock-in-trade.

He and his classmate, Tricia, equally smart and warm in her friendships, formed a marital partnership in which they derived pleasure from being considerate of one another. Money didn't matter. Having a posh house didn't matter. Having the newest car didn't matter. What other people thought, did, cared about or worried about didn't matter. People mattered. Relationships mattered.

Together, David and Tricia infused their ideals into their children, Erica and Christopher, talented and creative children who have become talented and creative adults. The Reids equipped their daughter and son with roots and wings the way great parents do--a grounding in values plus decency plus yearning to explore, learn, serve.

Word that David had cancer came years ago. Tricia, an Internet blogger before that term was even invented, wrote about it the same as she had everything else. Both were realistic, prayerful, confident, scared, accepting the challenge. What choice did they have?

They won a hell of a lot of battles, but, as the cliche goes, not the war.

Just a few weeks ago, a backache sent David to the doctor. It wasn't a pulled muscle. It was another malignancy. The verdict: David would die in a matter of weeks.

They say hospice nurses are compassionate, which would be expected. But they're also pretty seasoned. After David's nurse had her first private meeting with him, telling him how things would go, I'm told she left the room in tears.

The end came last Sunday night just as forecast, family and friends all there. A free spirit became free.

Encounters with people like David Reid are brief and rare. When they happen, listen for the melody. They've learned to sustain it through the noise.

Deer News Near Cornith, MS

This one was harvested last weekend and is a cousin of one of the firefighters that works with Gary, her husband. As soon as I get the story on this hunt, I will post it for you. What a monster!
I have a MySpace friend from Cornith, MS, that sent me these photos to my site. She said she had a little news from her neck of the woods, that her friends cousin killed the first buck over this past weekend and also found locked up bucks. Actually, both not far from the same area near Walnut, MS, where we were for the Thanksgiving Day. The other deer was taken around Dumas about 15 to 20 miles from her. She said I needed to come back up north and hunt! You don't say! She's all excited, because she is a lady hunter also! Hopefully, she will get a deer soon.

Vicksburg On The Hunt

Logan Sanders killed his first deer while hunting in Fayette. The son of Mikey and Haley Truesdell and Richard Sanders is one smiling, proud outdoorsman.

Hunting must run in the family as Mayson Wade also killed his first deer while hunting in Warren County with his dad, Ben. The 125-pound, 3-pointer was taken down with a 7mm-08.

Madison Wade used a 7mm-08 to bag her first deer, a 100-pound doe she killed on November 24 while hunting with her dad, Ben Wade. Madison made the shot while hunting in north Warren County. A brother and sister hunting. This is a sweetthing!
Posting some more great pictures of our youngest hunters in the great outdoors! Congratulations to all of them!

Our PAK Christmas Party

Pi Alpha Kappa Sorority Sisters!

Barbara and her new wind chimes!

My secret sister, Myrtle and I.
We had our annual Pi Alpha Kappa Sorority, Omega Chapter, Christmas Party tonight at Jacques' Cafe at the Battlefield Inn. I finally found out who my secret sister was for this whole year. It was none other than one of my former classmates. We have known each other since the first grade. (Actually, there are five of us in this sorority that I have known since the first grade). My secret sister was Myrtle and her husband was my boss at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ERDC). He has since past away. She gave me a lovely Santa that will look great in front or to the side of my fireplace. My secret sister for the year was Barbara and she loves anything outdoorsy around her home, so I got her some wind chimes. She has a real estate business that keeps her very busy and two Chow Chows to take care of. We really had a wonderful time. Unfortunately, two of our members could not attend. Our husbands were also invited, but Bob was not feeling well, so he stayed home.
