Kareen's Lucky #13 Hog

My Facebook friend Kareen of Alpine, Texas got hog #13 over the weekend. Here is the story of her kill in her own words.

I was out by 7:55 p.m. Some deer were there but ran off when I walked up. Then some javelinas came in and a short while later they all ran off. I looked to my right and could see a boar coming in from the other pasture since there is enough moonlight to see. He flitted around but would never settle down and ran off. I told myself that some other hog could come in so I waited. Sure enough, a short time later I could see the shadow of a hog. He finally came in and I really wanted to shoot him in the lungs but he presented a headshot so that is what I took. Down he went but he was still breathing although I knew he would not get back up. I waited a few minutes and then put one point-blank in his head and he did his death dance and was done. He was a neat looking hog, had some light coloring underneath. That makes 13 for the year and 183 in total. Awesome! I shot him at 8:45 p.m.

My congratulations to Kareen on lucky #13 in great wild Texas outdoors!

Happy 7th Birthday To Oliver Love

My Great Nephew, Oliver Love had a nice birthday party this past Saturday with a BarB-Que meal with all the trimmings, and ice cream, and cake.  A lot of his friends showed up and his family.  There was a huge waterslide in the backyard with a jumping room.  Oliver is sitting down at the bottom while his friend is flying into the slide.

Oliver opening up his presents with Mom overseeing.

Checking out one of his presents.

I heard he got more money than presents.  Racked up $275.00

Getting ready to hit the pinata!

Oliver the first one up to bat!

Dad and Mom watching over him.

Almost busted the pinata open.

Kids taking turns trying to hit the pinata.  The young boy with the blue towel around him ended up busting it and candy went flying everywhere and kids too!

Time to get down to business, make a wish, and blow out the candles.

I hope his wish comes true.

Oliver trying to eat his ice cream cake that was so hard.

Oliver struggled with it and I told him I love him and he said he loved me too!

Happy 7th Birthday, Oliver!

Why Lee Lakosky Quit his Daytime Job

"Literally October 1st walked into work and quit... I'm just not happy doing that." It's no doubt that Lee Lakosky harvests big deer year after year. But, it all started with a dream, a risk, and a whole bunch of hard work. Here's the story.

A Great Find

Chris Mann of Amory, Mississippi, an outdoor writer for Our Tupelo on Facebook was scouting for deer recently along the Tombigbee River and found this pipe washed up in the sand. After cleaning it up, it has the French flag on one side and the British flag on the other. He was not sure what time period it is from, but think maybe the 16th century? It is made from clay and the bowl is oblong instead of perfectly round indicating hand made. The French flag appears to have been hand-drawn with a stick or something. It was a cool find! Any anthropologists or archaeologists with insight? #MississippiHistory

My congratulations to Chris on a great find in our historic and wonderful Missississippi outdoors!

Running Loose

John Scarborough of Richton, Mississippi took out this guy with a pellet gun while running loose around the hunting camp.  This was a non-poisonouse water rat and now the hunters at the camp feel like their lives are over with because of John's kill.  I do wonder if they will have it mounted.  Congratulations to John on a job well done in our great Mississippi indoors!

Twelve Hogs and Counting For Kareen

My Facebook friend, Kareen Beinhauer who just shot Hog #182 and 12th for the year so far.  Here is her story in her own words from the Hog Queen herself of Alpine, Texas!

I'm back in from sitting out and I figured I wouldn’t see anything. The usual javelinas came in but all of a sudden they ran off. A few seconds later a boar wandered in so I slowly put my earplugs in and took my safety off. I thought about taking a lung shot but he offered me a perfect headshot which I took and he went down. 182 total, 12th for the year which I didn't think I would even get to, Yay!

I went to drag that hog off and took my measuring tape with me because on a hog hunting page somebody posted a picture of a chart. You measure the hog right behind the front legs and run your tape around the hog. The measurement will tell you how much they weigh within ten pounds. Before I measured I guessed he weighed about 250 and sure enough, he measured 45 inches which is 250. What a handy thing to have and now I will know how much they weigh without Roy having to bring the backhoe over.

My congratulation to the Kareen on her 12th hog for the year with a total of 182 in our great wild and wonderful Texas outdoors! I'm so proud of you!

Apple Snails Are One Of the World's Worst Invaders!

Stephanie and Kenric Ladner of Hancock County, Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, young son is holding an apple snail and said in the 39 years they had never found a snail this big in the freshwater of the Jourdan River and found two of them.

One had eggs recently.  Apple snails are opportunistic feeders that consume a variety of aquatic vegetation, fruits, and vegetable, algae, remains of a decaying organism, and other snail eggs.  Because of damage to crops, the channeled apple snails are listed as one of the world's worst invaders.

There are millions of them in the Louisiana swamps and in south Florida.  Kill everyone you can and the only way to do that is to scrap the eggs into water and they will die.  This is another non-native that should be reported and/or destroyed.

Keeping The Legacy Going

Seth Cook of Tupelo, Mississippi said his Remington 1100 did the trick Sunday morning.  His great grandfather left him this shotgun when he died 23 years ago.  It has killed many birds while he owned it.  Now it's his turn to keep the legacy going.  One day he will pass it on to his son.  He calls this bad boy, Odis!

My congratulations to Seth on a job well done during our MS dove season and I'm sure his great grandfather would be so proud.

"MASSIVE 700 lb HOG" Awesome Bow Shot!

I took this massive boar with my Hoyt Carbon Spyder 30. It weighed in at 725 pounds! It obviously had not been feral for very long, but it was very difficult to track and sneak upon. It fed quite a few families in need as well! My goal is always to put an animal down as quickly as possible, and not have it suffer needlessly.

AMAZING HEAD SHOT: Texas Hog Bowhunt

Have you ever wondered what to do if a wounded hog is about to charge and all you have is a bow? Should you take a headshot? Check it out!

I killed a 180lb. sow while it was eating in an open field. I was in a deer stand called the Taj Mahal and was deer hunting when I turned around and saw about 12-15 hogs. There were three big hogs and I put my .270 on her head while eating and dropped her in her tracks and put another round in and shot another hog running. It was an awesome hunt at the famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club in the MS Delta that I will never forget. Brought it home and had it processed and ate off of it for a year. Nothing like hunting in our great wild Mississippi outdoors!

Very First Alligator Hunt @ Christmas Place Hunting Club

This is the very first alligator hunt at the famous Christmas Place Plantation Hunting Club on the edge of the MS Delta where I hunt every year.  Berney Howell organized it and they caught two.  My hunting buddy Rex Howell of Deer Camp Blog sent me these two pictures of the alligators.   The camp has a 40-acre lake on 2,500 acres of hunting land. My congratulations to all the guys at the camp on a successful hunt in our great wild and wonderful Mississippi outdoors.

Berney Howell is on far-right and I don't know the other hunters.
