Sunday Brunch @ Historic Anchuca

I was invited to a Sunday brunch today by a friend that I used to work with at the Corps of Engineers. It was so delightful to see her again and we had a lot of catching up to do while we enjoyed our meal together.

Anchuca is a Choctaw Indian word meaning "happy home," and is one of the most significant antebellum homes and the first historical Bed & Breakfasts in my hometown of Vicksburg, MS.

A Greek-Revival mansion that was built in 1830 by J. W. Mauldin and was standing during the Civil War and was converted into a make-shift hospital and said that some of the men who suffered and died there are stilling hanging around.

Anchuca
Built in three stages from 1830 to 1855, this Greek Revival style mansion was originally built by J. W. Mauldin and sold to Victor Wilson in 1840.  Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Anchuca was Vicksburg's first antebellum residence to open as a tour home.

Walking to the back entrance of Cafe Anchuca.

Love the hand-made brick walkway.

The owner, Tom Pharr, greeted me in the courtyard.

The bathroom door!

Some pictures I took while waiting for my friend to arrive.

Owners bobtail cat relaxing in the courtyard.

My friend, Mary Louise Nosser, who's retired now, works part time at Anchuca and wears an antebellum gown while greeting the tourists off the American Queen, America, American Eagle and Queen of Mississippi riverboats and/or guests.  She has also been a tour guide for the Vicksburg National Military Park.

A lovely couple from Dallas, TX, staying at Anchuca, took our picture together.

Soothing sounds from the courtyard fountain to enjoy!

Getting ready to get out of my truck to buy some tomatoes.

This will hold me for awhile and make a lot of tomato sandwiches!

Alligator Killed During A Closed Season

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement division agents have cited a 49-year old Sunset man for allegedly killing an alligator during a closed season.

The department said in a news release, agents cited Kenneth Acreneaux for taking or possessing an alligator during a closed season and intentional concealment of illegally taken wildlife.

The agency says agents responded to an anonymous complaint against Arceneaux.  Agents showed up at Arceneaux's home on June 10 and learned that Arceneaux had harvested a six foot alligator in Cameron Parish earlier that morning.  The alligator season for Cameron Parish doesn't open until the first Wednesday in September.

A Deer Attack!

Mentor-On-The-Lake ~ An Ohio woman says she feels like a "prisoner" because a deer has been attacking her near her home.

Cindy Frost says she's called police about the doe and asked for assistance in walking her dogs near her suburban Cleveland home.

Frost says the deer charged her last week while she was taking her dogs out.  She says she had to fight the doe off with a dog leash and her fist, and tried to zigzag back and forth.  Frosts says the deer slipped on the black top allowing her to safely return inside.  She says the deer then circled her home.

A Wedding Anniversary & Historic Tour

I was so happy yesterday to finally see my first cousin Becky from Alabama after 65 years and to also meet her husband, Larry.  It has been such a long time and they decided to come to Vicksburg for their 49th Wedding Anniversary and tour our historic civil war town.  They are shown above at the Vicksburg Riverfront Murals that is a must see while here.

Afterwards, we went to eat on the rooftop at 10 South in downtown Vicksburg where you can see the Yazoo Diversion Canal, Lake Centennial and the mighty Mississippi River in the background and the bridges.  The Grand American Queen was in town for half-a-day but they missed her.  It is a great place to take pictures of sunsets as well.  You can barely make out the Mississippi River in the background because the tarp was in place and was raining. Otherwise, it is an opened enclosure.

Sharing a view from 10 South Rooftop taken last week when the Queen of the Mississippi and the Grand American Queen were in town with their passengers touring.  You can see the Vicksburg Riverfront Murals on the flood wall and also Children's Art Park at Catfish Row.

The rain finally stopped and took pictures at the Mississippi Welcome Center with I-20 and old Hwy 80 bridges in the background.

Cannons with American and Confederate flags down in front of the building.

Another shot of the bridges!

My first cousin, Becky and myself together again after 65 years.

Standing on the porch looking at the Mighty Mississippi.

A cannon at the Navy Circle adjacent to the Mississippi Welcome Center.

Today is their 49th Wedding Anniversary and they will be touring our historic town and the Vicksburg National Military Park.  My congratulations and wishing you both a very Happy 49th Anniversary and enjoy your stay!
