The Iowa State Memorial

Today I took the south loop to our Vicksburg National Military Park for an afternoon walk and took some pictures of the Iowa State Memorial.  My mother used to live in a house behind this monument when she was little and she told me she used to play on it. This side of the park loops real close to I-20 and also Mission 66, a road through town.

Spring Hits Vicksburg

Spring is only a few days away but Vicksburg is showing off it's flowering fruit trees, etc., already.  You can see the grass turning green while the woods are beginning to put on a new spring coat as well.  Today the high was only 40 degrees but according to the weatherman, we will have temps in the low 70's for the rest of the week and 78 degrees by Friday. Looks like Spring has sprung here in my hometown.

My Photo Published In The Vicksburg Post

Last Tuesday the Queen of the Mississippi showed up at our waterfront and I was able to get this nice shot of her on a cloudy day.  I was also happy to see that it was worthy of being published in our Sunday paper, The Vicksburg Post.

A Walk In The Park

Monday it was so nice and warm that my daughter called and we met up in the Vicksburg National Military Park to enjoy a walk in the park together.  Here's a couple of pictures she took of me in front of the Mississippi Memorial.

Then on Thursday I took off to the park for a short walk.  Stopped by the memorial of Lt. General William F. Vilas, who was in the Battle of Champion Hill and the Vicksburg Campaign.

I stopped to rest at the picnic tables in the park.

I looked down and saw a flower (weed) growing through the concrete cracks.  As soon as I took this picture a bee showed up!

A Busy Tuesday MS River Traffic

I drove by the Louisiana Circle after I took some pictures of the Queen of the Mississippi docked at our city waterfront.  It looks like I lucked up on some passing towboats going south towards the two bridges at Vicksburg.

Savannah's Buck Fever

This video was uploaded on September 12, 2011 by Savannah's Dad, Jason Ashment, of her first deer hunt. She shook hard for about 5 minutes after...not cold...it was her adrenaline pumping.  She was 9 years old and had begged to go with her Dad since she was 5 years old. Since this time she has hunted Nebraska with her dad and has 6 deer kills of her own.  Dad said, "Teach your kids to hunt and fish and you won't be hunting and fishing for them when they are in high school."

My congrats to Savannah on her very first buck in our great wild outdoors.  This is what it's all about!

A Young Hunter's Accomplishment

This was posted by my Facebook friend, Sportsmans Hub, that was posted by David C. of his son.  The young man is a survivor of a severe head trauma caused by a wreck with an 18-wheeler.  This is his first solo kill since his accident and is a major milestone for him and his family.  The buck is an eight point and was killed with a 30/30 on Arkansas's first youth hunt. My congrats to this young hunter and his accomplishments in our great wild outdoors!

Ian's Very First Fish

I'm so proud to announce that my Great Grandson, Ian, has caught his very first fish recently. Congrats Ian on your first fish and I'm so happy for you!  You will never forget your first fish. I can't want until you get your very first deer.  Glad your Dad is a hunter and hope one day we can hunt together.  That would be awesome!  Love you, Great Gran Gran

Carter's Big Fish

Britta Strom said that her son Carter caught this 7 pound bass in their pond this past weekend.  His ugly stick was about 3 feet long and set real lose.  Needless to say, she said, he beat out his Pawpa on the first cast.  It was so big he couldn't even hold it up hardly.  My congrats to Carter on a fine looking fish in our great outdoors!

Respect

Nearly half of the runners in a charity run for the Pat Tillman Foundation, which provides scholarships to military veterans and their spouses, stopped to pay their respect to Joe Bell, a 95-year-old WWII veteran clapping and cheering on the participants.

Respect for heroes will never get old!

Berry College Eagles

At Berry College in Georgia is a pair of eagles in their nest with a 24/7 camera.  Only one eaglet hatched recently and the other egg did not.  The male eagle buried the egg yesterday.  I thought you might enjoy checking in on them from time to time on their website and for the latest updates on their Facebook page.  If you did not know, the bald eagles mate for life!
