A Dixie Lady Deer Hunter

Article by Fred Messina, editor of "On Target Outdoors" from The Vicksburg Evening Post on Friday, January 19, 1990. Photo by Bob Phillips.

Bob Phillips came up the other day with a photo of his wife Marian and a deer she got on Brown's Point New Years Eve. The deer was an 8-point with 16 inches of inside spread that weighed in at 190 pounds. A nice trophy in anyone's book. However, the tale Bob told is that this was Marian's fourth deer this year and he claimed that he would have done better than he did if he had not spent so much time hauling Marian's deer out of the woods. Come off it, Bob. We all know who the hunter was.

Vicksburg Youth On The Hunt

Vicksburg resident Sean Hinson, 7, took this 125-pound 3-pointer for his first deer.  He was hunting with his uncle, Wayne Gerrard, on private land in Warren County, when he shot the buck on November 6.  Hinson is the son of Nancy and Randy Hinson.

Braxton McCurley shot his first deer, an 8-pointer, on November 6 at Buckmasters Hunting Club in Vicksburg.  The 160-pound deer was shot with a 7mm-08 rifle.  Braxton is the son of David and Tammy McCurley.

Karley Whittington shot her first buck while hunting on youth weekend.  The 8-pointer weighed 175 pounds.  Karley is the daughter of Daryle and Traci Whittington.

Brandon Steed's first shot turned into his first kill - the red squirrel.  The 7-year-old bagged it with a .410 shotgun while hunting with his father in southern Warren County on October 16.  Brandon is the son of Ray and Tammy Steed.  Congratulations to all our young Vicksburg hunters in our great wild outdoors!
