A Dixie Lady Deer Hunter

Article by Fred Messina, editor of "On Target Outdoors" from The Vicksburg Evening Post on Friday, January 19, 1990. Photo by Bob Phillips.

Bob Phillips came up the other day with a photo of his wife Marian and a deer she got on Brown's Point New Years Eve. The deer was an 8-point with 16 inches of inside spread that weighed in at 190 pounds. A nice trophy in anyone's book. However, the tale Bob told is that this was Marian's fourth deer this year and he claimed that he would have done better than he did if he had not spent so much time hauling Marian's deer out of the woods. Come off it, Bob. We all know who the hunter was.

Barely Missing the Buoy

Pictures were taken, Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the Louisiana Circle overlook, Vicksburg, MS.
I have never seen a towboat come in under the bridge so near the Louisiana side headed north before. He came very close to the buoy and thinking that he should have been on the other side of it.  As soon as he passed the buoy he pushed outward towards the middle of the river to get ready for the turn in the bend. This is what you call cover top hopper barges per Dennis who rode this towboat under the name of Navigator up and down the Mighty Mississippi.

Pushing his empty cargo of containers!

A little tugboat was following behind.

Thank you so much Blessed - I really appreciate that! :) I have lived here all my life and just now getting interested in the river traffic. Just so happened that I took a picture of a towboat that has never been published on a towboat site and he will be using my pictures. I'm really excited about that. So glad to see you come by for a visit and will get over to see you soon. Take care and have a nice week.

Marion,
I am a chief engineer who has rode this boat many years. she use to be the navigator when I rode her. When you talk about these types of barges they are cover top hopper barges . Just trying to help so you know what your writing about. keep up the pics I enjoy them very much. Dennis ,South East Ohio

Thanks so much Dennis - I did not know the correct name of the barges. I appreciate you letting me know and thanks for visiting my site. It's a pleasure to know that you rode this same towboat under another name down the mighty Mississippi. I will keep the pix coming. :)
