A Walk In The Park

Monday it was so nice and warm that my daughter called and we met up in the Vicksburg National Military Park to enjoy a walk in the park together.  Here's a couple of pictures she took of me in front of the Mississippi Memorial.

Up-close picture of lady on the Mississippi Monument.

Then on Thursday I took off to the park for a short walk.  Stopped by the memorial of Lt. General William F. Vilas, who was in the Battle of Champion Hill and the Vicksburg Campaign.

This is a killer incline...got to get back out here and get in shape.

I stopped to rest at the picnic tables in the park.

I looked down and saw a flower (weed) growing through the concrete cracks.  As soon as I took this picture a bee showed up!

A Busy Tuesday MS River Traffic

I drove by the Louisiana Circle after I took some pictures of the Queen of the Mississippi docked at our city waterfront.  It looks like I lucked up on some passing towboats going south towards the two bridges at Vicksburg.

M/V Karen Ann

I did not get the name of this towboat pushing a container as it makes it's way under the bridges.

M/V Karen Ann headed towards the two bridges at Vicksburg, MS.

There they both go headed towards their intended destinations to deliver their goods on a cloudy but very nice and warm Tuesday.

Savannah's Buck Fever

This video was uploaded on September 12, 2011 by Savannah's Dad, Jason Ashment, of her first deer hunt. She shook hard for about 5 minutes after...not cold...it was her adrenaline pumping.  She was 9 years old and had begged to go with her Dad since she was 5 years old. Since this time she has hunted Nebraska with her dad and has 6 deer kills of her own.  Dad said, "Teach your kids to hunt and fish and you won't be hunting and fishing for them when they are in high school."

My congrats to Savannah on her very first buck in our great wild outdoors.  This is what it's all about!

A Young Hunter's Accomplishment

This was posted by my Facebook friend, Sportsmans Hub, that was posted by David C. of his son.  The young man is a survivor of a severe head trauma caused by a wreck with an 18-wheeler.  This is his first solo kill since his accident and is a major milestone for him and his family.  The buck is an eight point and was killed with a 30/30 on Arkansas's first youth hunt. My congrats to this young hunter and his accomplishments in our great wild outdoors!

Ian's Very First Fish

I'm so proud to announce that my Great Grandson, Ian, has caught his very first fish recently. Congrats Ian on your first fish and I'm so happy for you!  You will never forget your first fish. I can't want until you get your very first deer.  Glad your Dad is a hunter and hope one day we can hunt together.  That would be awesome!  Love you, Great Gran Gran

Carter's Big Fish

Britta Strom said that her son Carter caught this 7 pound bass in their pond this past weekend.  His ugly stick was about 3 feet long and set real lose.  Needless to say, she said, he beat out his Pawpa on the first cast.  It was so big he couldn't even hold it up hardly.  My congrats to Carter on a fine looking fish in our great outdoors!

Respect

Nearly half of the runners in a charity run for the Pat Tillman Foundation, which provides scholarships to military veterans and their spouses, stopped to pay their respect to Joe Bell, a 95-year-old WWII veteran clapping and cheering on the participants.

Respect for heroes will never get old!

Berry College Eagles

At Berry College in Georgia is a pair of eagles in their nest with a 24/7 camera.  Only one eaglet hatched recently and the other egg did not.  The male eagle buried the egg yesterday.  I thought you might enjoy checking in on them from time to time on their website and for the latest updates on their Facebook page.  If you did not know, the bald eagles mate for life!

Trophy Buck For Christian

When 10-year-old Christian Lancaster ended deer season by killing a huge buck, he was unaware of the significance of his kill.

On January 25, while enjoying a morning hunt on his family's property with his stepfather Sonny Pell in Pattison, east of Port Gibson, a massive buck ran out in Lancaster's sight in pursuit of a doe.  Lancaster took careful aim and found his mark.  The 10-point buck had a 17-inch spread, 23-1/4-inch on the other.  The antler bases measured 5-1/4-inches and it weighed 210 pounds, with an estimated age of more than five years.

Lancaster said that he kept calm as he pointed his 7 millimeter-08 at the buck, while his stepfather's excitement got the best of him.

"I just saw the deer and I shot it in the shoulder.  My step dad made a noise that made the deer stop.  He was so excited when I shot the deer that I had to tell him to calm down," Lancaster said.

Lancaster has had a love for hunting since age four.  To him, shooting deer isn't only thing that excites him about the sport.

"I enjoy blood-trailing the deer, skinning the deer and I like to walk through the woods whenever it's muddy, Lancaster said.  "I like to help my step dad put out the feed for the deer.  I also like helping him put up stands and bringing them back to the house.  It's really fun."

Lancaster's mother Ashley Peel was impressed with the size of her son's trophy buck.

"The pictures of the deer don't do it any justice," Pell said.  "When my father-in-law saw the pictures of it, he didn't think it was that big.  But when he saw it in person, her thought it was huge."

Lancaster's hunting season was on the downside before he nabbed the burly buck, the only deer that he killed this season.

"I had a rough season.  I shot 18 times and didn't kill anything before this,"  Lancaster said, hopeful of another big trophy.  "I hope that I can kill one that's either the same size as this one or bigger."

Flowers Busting Out All Over

While walking in my sisters yard today I noticed a lot of flowers that are busting out all over.

Daffodils everywhere.

A big Camellia bush loaded down with these beautiful pink blooms.

Took a picture of "Kerri" watching me.

Kerri is a good old dog and a great watchdog.

Flowers in a hanging basket with thorns and I have no idea what the name of it is.  Looks like a face mask to me!

PS:  Flower is a bougainvillea plant/vine.

Towboat In The Fog

My brother-in-law, Chris Ables, took this picture with his cell phone of a towboat making it's way under the bridges at Vicksburg, MS, a few days ago around 8:30 in the morning.  You can barely see the top of the towboat as it makes it's way north.  He periodically reads instruments on the banks of the Mississippi River measuring the ground movements.  On this particular morning he was repairing and installing new instruments.

Vicksburg Youth On The Hunt

Connor Bottin harvested this 8-point buck while hunting with his father, Bobby Bottin, on Paw Paw Island in the 2012-2013 hunting season.  He also got a 9-pointer in the same season. Connor was 12 years old when the bucks were taken.

Siblings Colby and Carlyle Smith had some happy hunting for Christmas.  Colby, 13, killed this 6-point, 220-pound deer near Valley Park on December 23.  He was hunting with his grandfather, Jerry Smith, and uncle Jason Smith and used a 7mm-08 to make the shot.  His sister (below), 11-year-old Carlyle, shot a 10-point, 180 pound buck three days later while also hunting with their grandfather Jerry Smith and a 7mm-08.

Carlyle Smith with her 10-point buck!

My congrats to all our young hunters in our great wild outdoors!  Way to go guys!

An Icy Day

Last week we had an ice storm through Vicksburg but was not as bad as I have seen it.  Here are a few pictures I took and hope you enjoy them.

A very cold meal!

A cold icy perch!

I put a filter over my camera lens to catch the sun rays and this is the affect I got.
