Youngsters On The Hunt

Siblings Max and McKenzie Carlise have had a busy season.  Max, 7, below, bagged a 7-point buck for his first deer while hunting in Warren County on December 20 with his father and family and family friend David Smith.  McKenzie 12, above, took down a 10-pointer that scored 131 points while hunting in Warren County.  Max and McKenzie are the children of Brad and Misty Carlisle.

Caroline Williams, 12, bagged her first deer, an 8-point, 190-pound buck in south Warren County.  The deer had a 15 1/2-inch spread.  Caroline is the daughter of Chad and Wilda Williams of Vicksburg.
Madison Kendall, 11, shot this 8-pointer while hunting with her father, Tom Kendall, in Hinds County.  It was her first deer, and she took it down with a .44 Magnum rifle.

Matthew Newcomb bagged this 6-point buck with his bow on December 8 in the Bovina area.  It has a broken antler and was his second deer of the season.  He also killed a 110 pound doe the previous weekend in Issaquena County.

Joseph Ertle, 8, killed his first deer, this 225-pound 8-pointer with a 17-1/4 inch inside spread, on November 14.  He was hunting with his grandfather, Charles Ertle, in Yazoo County.  My congrats to all our young hunters in our great wild outdoors

Heading To Christmas Place

Bob and I have been invited up to the famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club for the last weekend of gun season.  We are looking forward to visiting with Rex (my friend/mentor) and his family and friends.  We hope to harvest a deer or two and maybe a hog.  Mark (mailrider) and Tony (two-gun) will be there.  It will be good to see them again.  Should be a lot of "SHOOTIN" going on this weekend in the MS Delta!  Charming, Just Charming!

Before The Snow Hit

We were running late getting on my stand last Wednesday because we had to get Bob situated first, which was a good ways across from me and he was going to go back and hunt near Bob.  Gerald had me cross a steep creek bed.  I had to sit down to slide down a hill and almost never made it up to the other side...this was suppose to be a short cut to my stand!  Well, got on the stand and no deer walked out but enjoyed being in the woods and watched a beautiful sunset.  The last picture may be a little crooked but it looks like the forest is on fire.  The next day it snowed.  (See pictures below)

Happy "65" Birthday To My Brother

Happy 65th Birthday to my only brother, Marion "Buster" Love.  My brother has been in the hospital since New Year's Day and now in ICU.  This is really not the place to be on your birthday but hoping that he will get better soon and back home.  This picture was taken while he was standing near the Statue of Liberty in New York, NY, when he was real young.  My mother and brother were there visiting my grandmother who was sick at the time.  Getting ready to go and visit him and give him a big hug and kiss!  Love you so very much, Big Sis

This and That

A few pictures I took while we ran out to shop while in northeast MS.  Here an Amish family parked at Wal-Mart - first time I have ever seen this. Above bales of snowed covered hay that I thought was very pretty.

Frigid Deer Hunt

I only hunted the afternoons because it was so frigid cold while Bob and Gerald hunted both mornings and afternoons. I was taken to a site that was just off the Natchez Trace near Camp Takatoka, which belong to some friends that owned the land. I walked in with Gerald and got up in a two-man 15 foot ladder stand. He went down below me pass the field and got in another two-man stand. Here are some pictures that I took around me last Thursday evening - a field behind me with two lanes in front of me and a creek bed to my right. The deer mainly crossed over the two lanes headed to water and if you couldn't get that shot, then you wait for the deer to step into the next lane. I saw no deer that afternoon in our great outdoors. The ladder stand was attached to a pine tree and the wind really picked up that afternoon and I was swaying in the frigid breeze! Burrrrrrr

Baby...It's Cold Outside

I took this pretty picture of a frozen creek bed on the Natchez Trace coming home yesterday afternoon from our truck. It was a winter wonderland while visiting our friends but was so bitterly cold. We really had a great time but saw no deer while on our stands. We were located about 20 minutes from Tupelo, MS, the birthplace of Elvis Presley. We got about an inch of snow and was able to deer hunt for the first time in the snow. Will be posting some pictures tomorrow of my hunt. The temps remained mostly in the twenties and teens!
PS: Many thanks Rex for posting for me while on my hunting trip...What do I really want? How about a deer, a hog and a good hunt with great friends! Bob and I are looking forward to seeing y'all at the famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club this coming weekend.

What Does She Really Want?

Marian has gone with Bob on a hunting trip and it is going to be cold, cold, cold. Next week they are coming to the famous Christmas Place for a last hunt, but what does she really want? A big buck or a great big old wild hog.
Something about Bob getting his hog has her all stirred up.
She has always been excited about shooting a big buck but recently she has just seemed to glow with the thought of blasting a hog. You know, that wild look like Phillip gets before he heads out and the same crazy eyes that Bob gets.
Mark Stewart gets that look too (it is creepy on him)and I think it may not be safe to be around them when they get it. Even so, if Marian wants pork chops I am going to do my best to help her out. It looks like she has her aiming problem fixed.

Hunting Trip

We have been invited to our friends home in north MS, off the Natchez Trace, to come and deer hunt the rest of the week. Snow has been forecast for MS Thursday and really cold, cold temps. My mentor and deer friend, Rex, over at Deer Camp Blog will hold the fort down until I return. We hope to bring home a deer or two! :)

Fawn and Bobcat

A friend sent me this by email and wanted to share with you today. This bobcat kitten was rescued near Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneggers ranch, where it was dehydrated and near death. The fawn was rescued during the Jesusita Fire in Santa Barbara, CA. Although wild animals, especially of separate species, are never placed together due to regulations, in this emergency situation, they had no choice. During the mayhem of the fire, they were forced to put animals anywhere they could, since they had run out of crates large enough for the fawn. The kitten ran to the fawn, and it was instant bonding. They snuggled together for several hours under a desk at the Santa Barbara County Dispatch Office. Charming, Just Charming!

Harvested A Doe!

Photo taken by Shiela Allen Mauldin-Brown
Where the doe crossed at the far end of the road to my left.
Small opening where the first deer came out and crossed at the very end to my right.

Got to my stand around 3:15 and all the other hunters were on their stands. I decided not to hunt my stand, instead I signed in for F-6, a field stand. I walked in, settled in and waited. Around 4:45 I saw a deer walk out to my far right and turned around to get set up, but by the time I did, it was gone. There was only a small opening in the curve of the road where we go to other stands. At 5:00 to my left a doe stepped out in the road that I came in and she just stood there grazing. I put my gun up to check her out and I had seen deer crossed here before in this same area but knew it was a 200 yard shot. I decided to take her since I have not harvested a deer this season and we needed the meat. BOOM! She dropped in her tracks. After the hunters came out of the woods...in fact...two hunters were to the right of me came by and help me load my doe on their 4-wheeler. Got to the camp, weighed her and was 125lbs. Since it is under Anderson-Tully leased-land management we had to take out the jawbone to age and record. She was 4 years old. Took to the processor and was very thankful on my way home for a good harvest in our great outdoors!

GONE HUNTING!

Taking off to go to my deer camp, Jasper Bottom, for an afternnon hunt...hope I bring home a deer! :)

Deer Befriends A Decoy

I have a scanner in my kitchen and while walking through I heard the dispatcher come on to say that a call had came in about a deer that was in a backyard. The policeman came back and said, "DEER"???...and the dispatcher said, yes, DEER. So the Vicksburg police came out to Frank Holifield's home to shooed away a spike that had visited his backyard on Drummond Street, which in about 5 blocks from our home. It looks like the spike attempted to befriend a decoy target. This picture was posted in The Vicksburg Post a few weeks ago under Photos By Our Readers. About two months ago while Bob and I were headed home, a big buck came out from below a hill on Confederate Ave., near a Confederate Monument, crossed in front of us and went down a hill on the other side. This was only 3 blocks from our home. All you could see was RACK! It was awesome! You don't have to live in a rural area or go to a deer camp...they are right under your nose in the city limits! Charming, Just Charming!

Youngsters On The Hunt

Kathleen Barnes shot a 180-pound, 8-point buck while hunting with her dad, Stanley Harris, on November 23. She shot it from 200 yards away with a .270.

Cody Pearson, 8, killed this spike deer in northern Warren County using a .44 Marlin. The deer weighed about 110 pounds.

Brothers Carson and Brandon Lynn have both been happy hunters this season. Carson, 7, left, bagged his first deer on youth weekend while hunting with his father at Capitol Hunting Club. The 9-pointer weighed 223 pounds and had a 15-inch spread. Brandon, 13, was hunting on private land near LeTourneau when he took this 9-point, 210-pound buck with a 17-inch spread. Brandon and Carson are the sons of Billy and Beverly Lynn.

Sisters Ebony and Olivia Tilden, each got their first deer this season. Ebony, left, killed a spike with a youth .243 from 200 yards on Thanksgiving morning. Olivia, above got a doe with her youth .243 on November 22. Both girls were hunting with their father, Clay Tilden, on private land.

My congrats to our young hunters in our great wild outdoors!

I Am The New Year 2010!

I stretch unused, unspotted, without blemish.

I stretch before you three hundred sixty-five days long.

I will present each day in its turn, a new leaf in the

Book of Life, for you to place upon it your imprint.

It remains for you to make of me what you will;

if you write with integrity & honest firm steady strokes,

my pages will be a joy to look upon when the next New Year comes.

If the pen falters & is overcome by hate, uncertainty, doubt

or if transgressions should mar the page, it will become an unfortunate day,

that will be remembered with pain & regret...

I am the New Year;

During each hour of three hundred sixty-five days,

I will give you 60 minutes, white and pure,

that have never before known, the use of man.

I present thee...

It remains for you to fill them with sixty jeweled seconds of

Hope for Peace, Love, Patience, Fruitful Endeavor,

And trust in God.

I am the New Year: I am here - but once past,

I can never to be recalled.

Make me your best.

Back Home From A Snowy VA

My adorable granddaughter, Emma, that I love and miss so very much!

My youngest and beautiful daughter, Suzi, that I love and miss so very much!

Suzi took this picture of me in her backyard. Deer have been seen from her bay window she said.

It was real Christmassy flying into Richmond, VA, at sunset with all the city lights in the fallen snow last Tuesday. I made it back home yesterday with more sleet and snow that's predicted for tomorrow in VA. I came home with a cold but trying to shake it off so I can hopefully go deer hunting this coming weekend. While in Virginia, I was offered a hunting trip by blogger/outfitter friend, Kevin Paulson, of HuntingLife.com, after he found out that I was in town. I really appreciated his offer but told him I will take him up on a hunt my next trip up. Many thanks to my deer mentor/friend, Rex, for taking over my blog while I was gone. Here are a few pictures in the backyard after a downpour of rain, a few days after I got there, which almost melted all the snow. It's good to be back home in Mississippi and hope all my bloggers/friends had a wonderful Christmas as I did.

Marian Is Snowed In

Word from the Washington area was that about 2 feet of snow had fallen over the Christmas break. Marian is probably snowed in till Spring. In the south we love snow as long as it is gone in a couple of days but 2 feet is ridiculous. You are not even allowed to hunt here if the snow is too deep.
Here is a pic of Marian and your friendly neighborhood blogger relaxing at the Christmas Place in front of the fire. Hope she will make it back for a last hunt or at least for the end of year Great Hog Hunt.
