Vicksburg Farmers' Market Grand Opening was held Saturday, June 14, 2008, from 8:00-11:00 a.m. at the corner of Grove & Levee Streets in downtown Vicksburg, near the Catfish Row Art Park.
My friend Ellis has led a fascinating and colorful career. As vice president of artist relations for MCA Music, he participated in the development of Tim Rich and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar and the careers of The Who, Elton John (supervising his American debut and first U.S. Tour), Bing Crosby, Rick Nelson, Bill Cosby, Neil Diamond, Loretta Lynn, Brenda Lee, Conway Twitty, Crystal Gale, Florence Henderson, classical guitarist Andres Segovia; and, independently, the careers of disco diva Gloria Gaynor, soul diva Millie Jackson and Broadway composers Jerry Herman and Stephen Sondheim. Ellis coordinated tours headlining Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Peter, Paul & Mary, Al Hirt, Peter Nero, Connie Stevens, Julie London and Bobby Troupe. His first interview was with Bob Hope. He's a veteran of The New York Times and New York Daily News. Ellis provided the entire spoken word elements of the hit revue Always, Patsy Cline, which is an international hit; and has adapted his book into an original "Broadway" musical with the Patsy Cline hits and an original score with music by George Leonard. He has written the lyrics. Ellis also conducted numerous creative writing seminars. He has endowed the University of Mississippi with the Mamie and Ellis Nassour Arts & Entertainment Collection, presently housed in the John D. Williams Library, in memory of his parents. Also, a performance by Maria Adona who sung three of Patsy Cline's songs and sounded just like her. Today Ellis will have a book signing at Lorelei Books store downtown Vicksburg of his updated third edition of his book, "Honky Tonk Angel: The Intimate Story of Patsy Cline." Later he will head to Jackson, MS, to tape a segment to be on the News and doing another signing with entertainment at the spanking new Barnes & Noble. Tomorrow we will all gather together with Ellis and friends in Mound, Louisiana for a fun get-together before he goes on to another book signings in Monroe and Shreveport, LA and then on to Atlanta. This is a sweetthing!

Vicksburg native Ellis Nassour will be in town Friday, Saturday and Sunday to visit with friends and to share his updated third edition of his book "Honky Tonk Angel: The Intimate Story of Patsy Cline."
Nassour, who lives in New York City, will lecture Friday night at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center, where he will be accompanied by Vicksburg local and Patsy Cline-style singer Marie Adona. On Saturday, he will sign copies of his book at Lorelei Books on Washington Street.
The book features interviews with people who knew Cline well, including her mother and second husband.
"I consider the book to be an oral history from all these people who knew Patsy," Nassour said. "You have to be careful though (about firsthand sources); my main ideal as the biographer was to be objective. Patsy certainly wasn't perfect."
Nassour grew up in Vicksburg and attended St. Aloysius High School and the University of Mississippi. His father, Ellis, owned a grocery store, and his mother, Mamie, worked for Charles' Department Store. His Mississippi background prompted colleagues at MCA to assumed he had an interest in country music, but " I didn't," he said. "As much as I hate hillbilly music, I grew to love Loretta Lynn" and later Patsy, said Nassour.
The book has been transformed into a musical. After over 10 years of development, "Pasty...Honky Tonk Angel" will debut in July in Cline's hometown of Winchester, VA. The musicals is the effort of Nassour and composer George Leonard.
"I learned how to write songs and how to use music to tell a story," said Nassour. "I think when you try to turn something into a musical if sort of cries out to you where a song should be." He is working on another book -- one about the Hollywood women who appeared in MGM musicals -- and has a Mississippi musical in the works. "I hope I can develop a musical about Mississippi, and sort of about Vicksburg. There must be something in the Mississippi water for writers. Look at all our great writers," he said, citing literary greats such as William Faulkner.
I'm looking forward to seeing and visiting with Ellis while he's here in Vicksburg. Ellis danced with me at my Senior Prom at St. Francis Xavier Academy (1959) and we also worked together at the Strand Theatre after graduation (1960). I remember telling him one day that he will go far in life and make a name for himself, and he truly has! We are so proud of our native Vicksburger, Ellis! Charming, Just Charming!
A friend of mine sent me this photo of a turkey hunt…which of course did not look right! So I e-mailed him back to see what the story was behind it. He told me that the turkey’s name is Tom and is a pet. The owner’s name is Marvin and his wife took this picture. Tom has been trained whereby you can pick him up and carry him around, plus he will follow you around if you call him. The turkey of course was not killed but when Tom saw his Master Marvin in CAMO he started running for the hills in our great outdoors!
Got a digital shot from my bedroom window of this squirrel trying to figure out why he can't get into the bird feeder. I put it there a few days ago and of course, WHO would be the first to find it? The feeder has a spring action on it. When he was getting on it, it went down and it scared him and he laid across the top of the swing set totally dazd and confused!!! This is charming, just charming! Maybe he want be back and the birds can enjoy themselves, but then we have cats in the neighborhood...oh my!
