Old Cemeteries

It seems that one of the newest crazes these days is going around to various cemeteries and reading and/or copying various epitaphs.

A truly Happy Person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. And, one who can enjoy browsing old cemeteries - Here are some fascinating things on old tombstones!

Harry Edsel Smith of Albany, New York:

Born 1903 - Died 1942

Looked up the elevator shaft to see if the

car was on the way down. It was.

More Fawns, Does & Buck

Received these pictures today from, as Dave puts it, his "urban" deer. This is only one of two woods where his cameras are set up. The guy at the top looks like he was really posing for his picture! Charming, Just Charming!

I received an email from my Indiana friend, Dave, on July 3rd of some more cam pictures of new fawns. Imagine his surprise when he saw the fawns in his great outdoors!

Square Watermelons???

Steve sent me this email the other day on square watermelons and thought I would share it with you, if you have not seen it already. We know that round watermelons can take up a lot of room in a refrigerator and usually round fruit often sits awkwardly on refrigerator shelves. Some smart Japanese farmers have forced their watermelons to grow into a square shape by inserting the melons into square, tempered glass cases while the fruit is still growing on the vine. I would say this is Charming, Just Charming!

Vicksburg's 4th Of July Fireworks 2009

This was the scene last night of fireworks being shot off from a barge located in the Yazoo Diversion Canal behind the Levee Street Depot. The crowd was estimated to be close to 9,000 people by the Vicksburg Police Department officials. The Krackerjacks (Party Band of the South) performed music to dance by and to enjoy. Bob and I did not make it this year because he was not feeling up to it. I watched the PBS (Mississippi Public Broadcasting) TV station of fireworks at The National Mall in Washington, D.C. They had The Jersey Boys, Aretha Franklin and Barry Manilow to name a few, for entertainment. It was really enjoyable. (Picture courtesy of The Vicksburg Post)

Happy Fourth of July!

This is one of the many pictures I took of the fireworks display last year at the Vicksburg water front. I hope to get some more nice pictures tonight. The Krackerjacks, a rock band from Greenville, will perform in front of the beautiful old train depot (The Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad Depot) on Levee Street at 7:30 tonight. One Last Visit

Taken last night in Delta, Louisiana, where Suzi and family are staying with her husband, Dennis' Dad and his new wife, Anita. Pictured above with Suzi, Emma and myself is Suzi's Dad, Jesse.

Ian, my great grandson, playing with Molly, my daughter Debra and grandkids' cat, who are staying with us for the time being.

We had two nice visits yesterday with my family. Above is Suzi's uncle, my brother, Marion (Buster) and Emma's Great Uncle. They will be leaving out today driving to North Carolina for another weeks vacation before heading back home to Virginia.

Hot Koalas!

Not long ago I had posted some pictures of Koalas in Australia during a heat wave. Yesterday, some more pictures surfaced and wanted to show them to you.

I have also heard that Koalas are not sociable and don't come out of their trees or down to the suburbs very often. But more interestingly, they don't actually drink water at any time. All the food and water they need is provided from the eucalyptus leaves that they eat. That's why they sleep about 22 hours of each day, because the calories and liquid intake is not enough to keep them awake. However, they consume enormous amounts of leaves during the time they are awake.

During the recent Australian drought, there were few moist leaves available, so the Koalas came to their human neighbors for help. A great example of human-animal cooperation in our great outdoors!

Yesterday at noon we all met up in Clinton at a Chick-fil-A Restaurant to visit with Suzi's Godfather and family who drove up from Lacombe, LA to see Emma. Ricky was ordained a Deacon for the Archdiocese of New Orleans, on December 13, 2008. We are all so proud of his accomplishment. Ricky and his wife, Lynn, were amazed that Emma could count to ten and not be two years old yet. We really had a wonderful time and took a few pictures of this special occasion. Charming, Just Charming!

Yesterday, I got to see my youngest granddaughter for the first time in almost a year and my has she grown. After spending the day with her, she is still a little afraid of me and by the time she leaves I should be able to hold her. I can still get the kisses in. She is staying with her Maw Maw and step-Grandpa in Richmond, LA, so she is around them more than me. The family got together here in Vicksburg for the first time around noon yesterday and we all enjoyed that. It was so hot here at 100 degrees. Later I went over to Louisiana and helped babysit her while my daughter and her hubby (Dennis) went to his 25th class reunion at the Tallulah Country Club. I'm only putting a few pictures on here....I doubt if I can get all 18 I took on one post. I got a little carried away...but that's what Gran Gran's do!

A Mississippi Visit

My youngest daughter, Marian 'Suzi', with Emma and her hubby Dennis (who works for the FAA in Washington D.C.) are visiting for a week from Virginia. Dennis is also here for his 25th Class Reunion in Tallulah, LA. I am looking forward to spending time with my daughter and precious granddaughter, Emma. She has been practicing saying "Gran Gran" and gets it out as "Gan Gan" and that's close enough for me! Emma will be celebrating her second birthday on July 25th. Suzi is a stay-at-home Mom and is a good Mother and I am very proud of her as I am of all my daughters. Charming, Just Charming!

Wasp Spray?

Addie, my friend in Dallas, TX, sent me an email last night of using Wasp Spray as a weapon. She wonder if this would be considered a lethal weapon? She never would have thought it! Sounded like a good idea. She had a neighbor who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area who was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection. Thought this was interesting and wanted to pass it along.

A Celebrity Luncheon

Vicksburg native Ellis Nassour, left, conducted the interview of Debbie Reynolds, center, in New York a week ago last Monday at the Friars' Club celebrity lunch at which Reynolds was inducted as an honorary member. At right is Mary Louise Nosser of Vicksburg, who was in New York to attend the 30th Annual Mississippi Picnic in Cental Park the day before. Nassour is an author and playwright. Nosser is a licensed guide in the Vicksburg National Military Park.

I intended to post this yesterday but got side tracked. Carl really had a nice 19th birthday with a hamburger cookout. Jamie, Ian's Dad, grilled out on the deck but it was so hot that everyone ate inside. Afterwards, some of the grand kids and invited friends jumped in the pool to cool off. Even the water was hot....but at least it was wet. It was good to visit with family and to see my great grandson, Ina, again. He will be two years old in November and a little pistol.
