A Dixie Lady Deer Hunter

Article by Fred Messina, editor of "On Target Outdoors" from The Vicksburg Evening Post on Friday, January 19, 1990. Photo by Bob Phillips.

Bob Phillips came up the other day with a photo of his wife Marian and a deer she got on Brown's Point New Years Eve. The deer was an 8-point with 16 inches of inside spread that weighed in at 190 pounds. A nice trophy in anyone's book. However, the tale Bob told is that this was Marian's fourth deer this year and he claimed that he would have done better than he did if he had not spent so much time hauling Marian's deer out of the woods. Come off it, Bob. We all know who the hunter was.

Last Turkey Hunt Of Year In WY

This was the last turkey hunt of the year on the Solitude Ranch & Outfitters own by Mike Schmid of La Barge, Wyoming, my Facebook friend.

Barney Valentine (above) accompanied his wife Brenda Valentine to the Old West Turkey Shoot recently. While Brenda was involved in the event as one of Mike's special guests Barney hung out at the ranch with Mike's brother Jim and his son-in-law Heath. Jim and Barney hit it off great and the three of them enjoyed chasing turkeys. They didn't connect on one but made a new friendship.

After the event the Bass Pro team spent a couple days extra with Mike.  On a Monday afternoon Barney teamed up with Allen Treadwell and they came back with this dandy Merriam's gobbler. Barney was a pretty happy Tennessee turkey hunter. Brenda made a beautiful picture of Barney and his Solitude Ranch gobbler with Devils Tower in the background.

What a fantastic and awesome picture Brenda took and wishing my congratulations to Barney on a nice looking bird in our great wild and wonderful Wyoming outdoors.
