Getting Ready For Deer Season 2018-2019

Tomorrow is opening day for the 2018-2019 MS deer season for gun.  I was able to go to a deer camp today to zero in my rifle with my hunting friend, Charley Ring.   His family has a camp off of Ring Road south of town.  We both shoot a .270 and it was a perfect day to be in the woods.  So happy to get my rifle sited in and have no excuses in missing a deer this season.

Family Ring Deer Camp.

The skinning rack.

Charley shooting my gun first at 50 and then 100 yards.

Me shooting at 50 and 100 yards.

At 50 yards, Charley's shot to the left and my shot to the right.  Dead deer!

At 100 yards Charley's to the left 1st try and 3rd try after flenching twice.  Dead deer!

Took this picture from Charley's truck of a deer stand right next to his family's property.  A really nice stand.

A beautiful day to be in the woods and have hunted this field and saw a fawn and doe.

Charley getting ready to clean out his stand.  This is the stand I hunted a few years ago and saw the two deer but when I put my rifle up to shoot the sun glanced off my barrel and Mama doe was looking right at me and took off.

Charley got the wasps nest and cobwebs out of the deer stand and swept it out to hunt out of it tomorrow.  GOODHUNTING to all the hunters in our great wild outdoors!  Wish me LUCK this season!

Mama Lucille At 85 Years Old Got Her A Buck!

Mark Drury of Drury Outdoors TV show took his Mama Lucille hunting with cameraman Wade in the Missouri hardwoods at the young age of 85 years.

He is so proud of her shooting her biggest deer at 40 yards with a .223.  She said it was a fun time and very educational for four days

He thanked his Mom for spending her weekend with them and will forever cherish this moment in time.

Mark said we know that Pops is looking down on us every day.

Got him on Cam!

My congratulations to Lucille on a fine buck and at the age of 85 years.  I hope I will still be hunting in our great wild and wonderful outdoors at 85!  Way to go, Lucille!

Little Graham's First Pig

Graham's Dad, Brandon from Pierre Part, Louisiana said that his son hasn't missed an animal yet and he thinks he's the next American sniper.

He shot this pig at 130 yards with a red dot with no magnification and shot it right at first light probably around 6ish somewhere in Mississippi.  They did not get down until around 9:00 so it was already starting to get stiff and why it was not falling over.  Dad had to beak a stick and shove it in the dirt and stuck it in the pig's ear because he couldn't hold it up.  We know this little piggy did not go wee wee wee all the way home!

My congratulation to little Graham with a "winning smile" in our great wild and wonderful Mississippi outdoors!  :)

Eli's First Deer

Eli got his very first deer Saturday while hunting with his Dad and Mom of Lafayette Springs, Mississippi.  His Mom stated that he has been hooked on hunting and been a bunch of times but never shot.  Now that she has a .243 he can shoot it.  His doe weighed 100 lbs.

Looks like the kids are bringing home the meat in our great wild Mississippi outdoors!

Proud Mom, Tiffany taking a picture with proud Dad, Michael.  Mom videotaped looking for his deer with his Dad which was posted online.

My Congratulations to Eli on his very first deer.  His smile says it all!  Way to go, Eli!

Administrator Donald Robertson could not resist in making up this cute saying for Eli's deer.

What Joy!

My two youngest Granddaughters little Kate and Emma playing in the leaves at their home in Virginia.

I wished I lived closer to see them every day but at least I can enjoy the pictures that my daughter, Suzi sends me.  They bring me so much joy when they come to Mississippi to visit me or when I talk to them on the phone.  It looks like they are having a blast playing in the leaves in their front yard.  Gran Gran loves both of you so much!  xoxo

MS Confirms 2nd Deer With Fatal Disease

The second case of a debilitating deer disease has been confirmed in Mississippi.

The state Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks announced Tuesday that additional tests confirm a white-tailed deer found October 8 in Pontotoc County had a chronic wasting disease.

The contagious and fatal neurological disease causes deer to have tremors and other movement problems and lose weight.  The disease is already present in 24 other states.

An earlier case was found in January in Issaquena County.

The department is implementing restrictions in Pontotoc and Union counties, and in Lee County west of U.S. 45, to control the disease's spread.  Supplemental feeding, supplemental minerals, removing certain deer carcass parts, and trapping wild hogs without a permit are banned.

The department is encouraging area hunters to submit killed deer for testing.

Laney's Very First Buck!

I'm so proud of Laney getting her very first deer!  I saw her last night at my Great Grandson Ian's Birthday Party at the Margaritaville Hotel & Family Entertainment Center.  He had friends and family to come and celebrate his special day and afterward they all played arcade games.

While visiting with Laney's Mom, Amber she showed me a picture of her very first deer a six-point buck that she got while hunting with her Grandpa Frank.  I'm so proud of her and it reminded me of my first deer as well, a six-point buck in Claiborne County on opening day.

This past Saturday, November 3rd was opening day of rifle season for the MS Deer Youth Hunt.  I asked Laney to tell me the story behind her hunt and this is what she had to say.

She went hunting with her Grandpa Frank to a camp Hwy 61 South of town and they got in a stand about 4 feet off the ground.  She explained to me that there were several shooting lanes they could watch from the stand.  She saw this buck in one of the lanes and was able to get ready and when he crossed over into the next lane she aimed behind his shoulder and shot.  It was 4:25 pm.  With her Grandpa they tracked her deer and he proudly took pictures with her trophy.

I know how excited he must have felt for her since I have taken my daughters, granddaughters, and grandsons hunting with me.  My congratulations to Laney on getting her very first deer in our great wild and wonderful Mississippi outdoors.  She is officially a deer huntress now and putting meat on the table!  I'm sure she will have her trophy six-point mounted.  I did too!  Way to go Laney!

My Picture Published In Today's Paper

HALLOWEEN TREAT:  Marian Ann Love submitted this photo of three riverboats - the Queen of the Mississippi, America and American Queen - docked at the Vicksburg riverfront Wednesday.

I was pleasantly surprised that my picture of the three riverboats (an event that happens once a year so far) was published "in color" in our hometown paper, The Vicksburg Post.  I've only had one other picture in color and that was a sunset on the front page!  This did make page 2 and what a Halloween treat for our city of Vicksburg, MS.  Many thanks to our paper today who found it worthy for publication.
