A Dixie Lady Deer Hunter

Article by Fred Messina, editor of "On Target Outdoors" from The Vicksburg Evening Post on Friday, January 19, 1990. Photo by Bob Phillips.

Bob Phillips came up the other day with a photo of his wife Marian and a deer she got on Brown's Point New Years Eve. The deer was an 8-point with 16 inches of inside spread that weighed in at 190 pounds. A nice trophy in anyone's book. However, the tale Bob told is that this was Marian's fourth deer this year and he claimed that he would have done better than he did if he had not spent so much time hauling Marian's deer out of the woods. Come off it, Bob. We all know who the hunter was.

An Afternoon Hunt

This afternoon I took off and went down to my granddaughter and her husband's land to hunt south of town.  The temps were in the mid-40's and got on my stand around 3:15.  It has been awhile since I have had a chance to go hunting and was glad to get out of the house to go.  Only saw two yearlings walk out between 5:10 and 5:15 and enjoyed watching them.  Also, the owls, squirrels playing and barking and the birds singing their hearts out.  I also had a small stream running by my stand and was nice to hear the water trickling along.   An 8 point and a couple of does have been taken off of this stand this season.  Our hunting season will be over with by the end of January 2013.  My husband and I have been invited to hunt at the famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club with my blogging friend/mentor and his family soon.  We are looking forward to our hunting trip and hopefully harvest a deer and maybe a hog or two.  Below are a few pictures I took while on my stand today.

Yearlings came out at the far end of the road and walked from left to right..

Brian's First Deer

Brian Roberts is the grandson of Louis "Sonny" Logue, (Class of 1959), my classmate.  Brian is shown here with his first deer (doe) that weighed in at 101 lbs. at Shiloh Hunting Camp in Port Gibson, MS, yesterday.

Looks like he got initiated also.  My congrats to Brian in our great wild outdoors!

Christmas Party Pix

Granddaughter Lucy with her oldest brother, grandson, Stephen.

My great grandson, Ian with his Mom, Victoria (granddaughter) and Dad, Jamie.

My grandson, Ethan, was the "big surprise" guest to arrive home for the Christmas holidays from Fort Lee, Virginia, Air Force Base.

I'm so proud of my grandson and was so very happy to see him.

My great grandson in front of the Christmas tree.

We went outside to take a picture and he closed his eyes for me!  He's a little stinker!

He did keep his eyes open for this picture under my "Charlie Brown" Christmas tree.

Ian, taking his picture by Santa Claus!

He loved his gum ball (bank) car that I gave him and shared his gum.

My granddaughter, Lucy, who is growing up so fast.  She is in the 9th grade now.

My daughter, Debi who is the mother of Stephen, Ethan and Lucy, with her new friend, Matt enjoying a good belly busting laugh!

After The Christmas Day Storm

This picture was taken off my back porch of the sky after the storm had passed. It rain and it rain and it rain and got about 2 inches with about 400 Energy customers without power according to the paper.  We were lucky that we did not lose our power and that we escaped major effects of this enormous storm system that unleashed damaging tornadoes across the Deep South.  Last night was very windy as the cold front pushed through and the low for tonight will be in the upper 20's.

We had planned a big family get-together for Christmas Day but had to be postponed for one day since two of my daughters lived out-of-town and traveling would be very dangerous.  The best part, which was a BIG surprise, was having my grandson, Michael "Ethan" Kelly, home from the Air Force (Fort Lee, VA) for the Christmas holidays. Also, got to spend some time with my great grandson, Ian and with all my family except for another daughter residing in Virginia and the same system headed her way.

Rocky vs Flip

For hunters and nature folks...once you watch this video on the website (texashuntfish.com) you will witness a very rare battle between two extremely large "bucks" that have locked their horns and get into a vicious battle.  It has a happy ending. There is sound but not loud enough.

This is one heck of a fight in nature's realm.  An awesome video!

Claragrace's Trophy Buck!

On the Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks site on FACEBOOK, I saw this nice trophy buck that Claragrace Bozeman harvested on Deer Management Assistance Property (DMAP) in Madison County.  I know she is a very proud hunter and I want to congratulate her on her fine harvest in our great wild outdoors!  Way to go Claragrace!

Great Grandson & Santa

Featured on Pocket Ranger's Blog

I was contacted recently by Virginia, new media coordinator, who runs the blog for Pocket Ranger® apps, a line of mobile tour guides for America's state parks as well as fish and wildlife apps, and she wanted to feature me in an upcoming post.  I was deeply humbled that I was considered to be featured and commented that my blog was great and very thoughtful, and certainly something that resonate with my readers.  I was also given a brief question and answer to fill out.

A Hometown Christmas

I live in an historical Civil War town of Vicksburg, MS, on the mighty MS River.  I was born and raised here and never left home.  I wanted to share with you some pictures I took last Saturday night of a hometown Christmas all dressed up and getting into the spirit of Christmas.

Downtown at the corner of South and Washington Streets.  I lived 21 years at 2515 Washington Street, south of town, but our home no longer stands.

Santa and reindeer at City Hall.

Christmas Ball.

Holly

Candle with flower.

Looks like poinsettias!

Christmas stocking!

Parking area all lit up which used to be a 4 or 5 story bank here and was torn down.  You can barely make out St. Paul's Catholic Church in the background where I was first married and had all my children baptized with graduations and marriages.

Shooting star.

Christmas stocking.

Candy cane.

Another pretty candle with a flower.

Angel

The Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Station, now "The Depot" housing a museum and visitors center all dressed up for Christmas holiday.

"God's Christmas Gift," First Baptist Church on Cherry Street - every 15 minutes from the Family Life Center; majority of the program was outside.  My husband and I have been to this and it really puts you in the spirit of the REAL meaning of Christmas.

Luminaries at Glenwood Circle and area streets.

Mr. & Mrs. Robert "Bobby" Alvarado's lovely home on Cherry Street.  I know this couple very well and went to school with Mrs. Alvarado, "Myrtle," for 12 years and we are both in the same sorority together.

A lone luminary with a pretty lit bush in the background.
