Tragedy Hits North Of Town

Yesterday afternoon after we got home from Play A Day In May Away, I was in the kitchen when I heard on our scanner that there had been an explosion at International Paper Company. One of the two boilers had exploded and the hospital staff was soon alerted. One person was dead and 17 injured. Marcus Broome, 28, a contact worker, was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother lives in Vicksburg and was in total shock. He is the father of twin 4-year-old girls. His wife was at Jazz Fest in New Orleans when she heard of the news. All 17 injured in the blast, were taken to River Region Medical Center. Most of the injured were treated and released and five people were transferred to a burn hospital in Augusta, GA. About 400 people, including IP's 306 regular employees, were at the mill off Mississippi 3 when the boiler exploded. The blast is the first they have had in the 40 years they have been in business here. OSHA reps will be coming in to investigate and operations are on hold until inspections are completed. IP has manufacturing operations in North America, Europe, Latin America, Russia, Asia and North Africa. The company has about 51,500 employees, 33,100 in the US.

Things like this are always so horrible. I hope it was just a terrible accident and not the result of negligence on someone's part.

My heart goes out to the families of those who were injured or killed.

My heart always skips a beat when I read about factory mishaps.

The loss of life could have been higher, but the one that was lost will be greatly missed.

Hope all those injured will have a speedy return to health and that no further causualties will result from the more severe injuries.
