A Deer Hog Hunt

Bob and I were invited to go on a hog hunt Saturday afternoon while the young hunters were in the woods hunting. They have quite a few wild hogs at the Christmas Place Hunting Club and the herd needs to be thinned out. Rex and his daughter, Sarah, took us to his Dad's (The Chief) stand, called the Game Warden's Stand. They have seen a number of hogs off of this stand. We were excited to get a chance to do this, since we have never been on a hog hunt. As it turned out, around 5:00 we had a doe with two yearlings to walk out and about 10 minutes later another doe and a yearling. It was so nice to watch and enjoy. Bob brought his binoculars with him and we took turns watching the deer eat in their environment. It was getting pretty dark, but I went ahead and took pictures. (If you double click on the pictures you can actually see them). I'm surprised the flash did not spook the deer. We were grateful that we got the opportunity to go on a hog hunt and the bonus was five deer off of his Dad's stand in the great outdoors! This is a sweetthing!

The 2nd annual Whitetail Youth Hunt was held at the famous Christmas Place Plantation Hunting Club in the Mississippi Delta this past weekend. I had intended to take my grandson for a hunt on Saturday, but circumstances did not permit this, so Bob and I went. We, as always, spent a memorable day with the Howell Family and their friends. It was exciting to see the young hunters harvest a deer. This program is a fantastic opportunity for all young hunters. Rex and his family should be commended for the hard work that it takes to put on such an event like this. I'm looking forward to the next season in hopes that my grandson will get to go hunting in the great outdoors at the Christmas Place Hunting Camp.

Ready for Gun Season!

I finally got to shoot my .270 Ruger and hit almost dead center. Dead Deer! Greg shot his Dad's gun and the bullets holes are left/right of the centered one while zeroing in. Charming, Just Charming!

Yesterday afternoon Greg, Bob and I went down to my stepson's father-in-laws farm south of town. They have approximately 80 acres of land near the Mississippi River. We zeroed in all three guns for opening day of gun season this coming Saturday. Yay! It was such a nice afternoon to be in the great outdoors. On our way in I stopped and took pictures of two of the three horses on the farm. I love taking pictures of animals. My favorite is, according to Rex, cows!

Happy 44th Birthday Theresa!

My oldest daughter, Theresa Marie (Teri) is 44 years old today. She is presently working at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Magee, MS. She has worked in nursing homes for 21 years now. Theresa was actually due the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated but came early on Veterans Day. She has one daughter, Sonya, who is attending the University of Southern Mississippi, in Hattiesburg, MS and majoring in drama and theater. Happy Birthday Teri....Mama Loves You! This is a very sweetthing!

Becoming a Huntress!

I received an e-mail yesterday from a real nice up and coming lady hunter by the name of Holly. She lives in Northern California in the city of Sacramento and is a Faculty Advisor at CA State University. She has started a new blog about being a new woman hunter. Her blog is called, NorCal Cazadora - Becoming a Huntress. She writes that NorCal Cazadora is a rare bird in the world of hunters - a woman in an arena dominated by men. She claims that she is a late starter who didn't pick up a shotgun until the age of 41. This blog is her journey into this new world. She explains that Cazadora is Spanish for "huntress". Go over to her new blog and give her a nice warm welcome into the great outdoors of hunting. This is a sweetthing!

My First Anniversary!!!

Today, November 7, 2007, is the first anniversary of my blog here at BLOGGER. I have come a long way in one year. I started blogging because my next door neighbor Tricia had a blog called "Tricia Dishes." I really enjoyed reading hers, so I decided to start me one. I already had a MySpace site devoted to hunting, but I wanted to do more. That's when Marian's Hunting Stories, etc., etc., etc. was born. As you can see from the archives I did not blog from December 2006 to the end of January 2007. I lost interest in my blog that quick. On January 29, 2007, on my website, A Dixie Lady Deer Hunter, a nice guy came by from a forum and signed my guestbook. (When anyone leaves me a message, I always try to write them back and thank them). This person was also a Mississippian and through his e-mails and calls, he encouraged me to write more about my hunting experiences, etc. Since then, he has become my mentor and a very good friend to both my husband and I. I can truly say that he is a fine southern gentleman and you could not meet a nicer person. You all know him by the name of Rex/Editor over at Deer Camp Blog. If it wasn't for him, I would not be here today writing my first anniversary message to you. My sincere thanks to you Rex! :)

My First Deer Stand

Pictures of me on my first deer stand (Marian's Stand) taken the hunting season of 1986, which was located on the Big Black River in Claiborne County, at Jasper Bottom Hunting Club. The stand is no longer there because of the river overflowing its banks and logging. I was only about 50 yards from the edge of the river bank. Of course, if I did not hunt this stand, another hunter could sign up for it. At my deer camp we have a book to sign in and out of. If we harvested a buck you enter the weight and number of points and if a doe, the weight and if she was lactating or not. You sign out when you left the camp after hunting. I now have a new stand on the top field which is metal. It is within walking distance of the camp house. I have been a member of this camp for over 22 years now. My hunting dues is a case of Jack Daniels! Charming, Just Charming!

At 10:50 today my second great-grandson came into this world. His name is James Marlin "Ian" Hammack, IV. He weighed in at 6 lbs. 7 oz., 18-1/2 inches long. Of course, I am a proud great-grandmother. My Granddaughter, Victoria, is doing fine. This makes three babies born into the family this year after a 10 year dry spell. I am looking forward to seeing him grow. Who knows, I might get to take him hunting one day! I got him a little camo outfit to wear home from the hospital. I'm already working on it!

California Burning

Recently Southern California was consumed by wildfires that burned thousands of acres of land and homes. Here are a few pictures taken from the fires. There were over a dozen wildfires across Southern California, that forced the evacuation of thousands of residents. Fires burned in Malibu, Lake Arrowhead, Irvine, San Diego, and many other places. California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles, Orange, Poway, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties as a result. This was the worst case of wildfires Southern California has ever had. You can keep updated on the recovery from the fires by going to the website, Rim of the World.

Lets pray for all the people that have lost their lives and homes and give thanks to all the brave firefighters. (I will post more pictures on Sunday)

POWDER!

A very eventful day around here... A once in many lifetimes experience! I saw this lil' feller run out in front of a car--thought it was a lost baby goat. Stopped to get it, and WOW!! A real Albino Whitetail Deer. Just hours old, but doing fine. No Momma deer around. Another car nearly hit it in front of me. Well, he is THE neatest thing any of us ever saw. And such a 'freak of nature', that only 1 in more than a million are even born. He took his bottle of food, followed us around the house, doing great. So, we called the Zoo & Fossil Rim, who were both interested, but we're going to send him to a Rehab farm. Maybe he will make it in captivity somewhere and be appreciated. So rare... sure wanted to keep him tho. but, not the thing to do. And not LEGAL either. Here are a couple of pictures to show you. He was snow white, pink eyes, ears, nose and hooves. Kids called him POWDER. He was SO small. That is my shoe lying beside him... WOW..how cool is that??
