A Dixie Lady Deer Hunter

Article by Fred Messina, editor of "On Target Outdoors" from The Vicksburg Evening Post on Friday, January 19, 1990. Photo by Bob Phillips.

Bob Phillips came up the other day with a photo of his wife Marian and a deer she got on Brown's Point New Years Eve. The deer was an 8-point with 16 inches of inside spread that weighed in at 190 pounds. A nice trophy in anyone's book. However, the tale Bob told is that this was Marian's fourth deer this year and he claimed that he would have done better than he did if he had not spent so much time hauling Marian's deer out of the woods. Come off it, Bob. We all know who the hunter was.

Vicksburg Youth On The Hunt

Cami Ghrigsby shot her first deer, a 130-pound doe, while hunting with her father Jay at St. Alban's Hunting Club on November 11.

Nolan Gullett, 7, shot his first deer with a .243 rifle in Yokena.  Nolan is the son of Matt and Jennifer Gullett.

Robert "Beau" Hinson, 9, killed his first deer on private land in northern Warren County on November 10.  He shot the 155-pound spike with a .243 rifle at a distance of 70 yards.  Robert is the son of Robin and Gary Hinson.

Taylor Rae Pace, 12, bagged this 8-point, 200-pound buck while hunting with her father, Preston Pace, in southern Warren County on November 12.

Evan Mabe, 9, took her first deer on November 12 while hunting with her father on private land in Hinds County.  She shot this 115-pound doe at a distance of 130 yards.  Evan is the daughter of Levi and Kenda McMillian.
Emily Grace Redditt, 7, took her first deer on the opening morning of the youth hunt weekend. She used a .223 handi-rifle to make the 115-yard shot that took down the 125-pound doe.   Emily Grace is the daughter of Monte Redditt.

I'm so proud of all our young hunters in our great outdoors.  I remembered how proud I was to get my very first deer when I started hunting in my mid-forties.  These youngsters are so lucky to start at a very young age to enjoy such a great sport.  My congratulations to each and every one and may you have many more harvest of deer to come!

Here in Sweden we are allowed to take the hunting license with age of 15. Its education with tests in writing and practic shooting. Then you have to sit beside your parent when hunting with his/her gun. Age of 18 you can apply for license for a gun. You can´t by a gun if you don´t have the hunting license. Mostly the education is 10 weeks, every week about 2-3 hours in the evening. Then a practic shooting, saftey handling with a gun, test in different ranges you are allowed to shoot different kind of animals.

@Lindsjo taxor - Here in MS residents under the age of 16 are exempt from purchasing a hunting or fishing license. Individuals exempt based on these criteria may purchase a voluntary Youth Exempt license by providing their social security number along with a copy of their parents/legal guardian's driver's license to establish residency. Can be purchased online. For Hunter Education requirements all persons born on or after January 1, 1972, must satisfactorily complete a hunter education course approved by the Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks before purchasing a MS hunt license. My daughter, granddaughter and three grandsons took the course and so did I and was very informative. I recommend to any hunter no matter what age.

@DeanO...I will be sharing the Youth Hunts plus hunts by adults during the hunting season here on my blog. I would love to post your pix of deer with story when you get one and you will! GOODHUNTING! :)

@michael - So glad you got a deer at 19 and yes, these kids are real lucky to have gotten one at an earlier age. They are our hunters of tomorrow and it's wonderful that a parent or adult took the time to teach them and with the hunter's education in place..'it's even better. I love sharing the kids in our great wild outdoors! :)
