Stephanie and Kenric Ladner of Hancock County, Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, young son is holding an apple snail and said in the 39 years they had never found a snail this big in the freshwater of the Jourdan River and found two of them.
One had eggs recently. Apple snails are opportunistic feeders that consume a variety of aquatic vegetation, fruits, and vegetable, algae, remains of a decaying organism, and other snail eggs. Because of damage to crops, the channeled apple snails are listed as one of the world's worst invaders.
There are millions of them in the Louisiana swamps and in south Florida. Kill everyone you can and the only way to do that is to scrap the eggs into water and they will die. This is another non-native that should be reported and/or destroyed.
