Leah's First Deer

 

Joe Taylor's granddaughter smoked this 10 point buck yesterday morning.  She is 7 years old and made the perfect shot.  My congratulations to Leah, who lives in the great wild outdoors of Missouri. 

Hog Queen's #187

My Facebook friend, Kareen from Alpine, TX, did it again.  She got hog #187 last night and I wanted to share her harvest story with you in her own words.  

SD card showed a hog coming in at 8:15 p.m. so I was sitting out by 7:38 p.m. Nothing showed up for a while but then 6 javelinas came in. The coyote that I have been seeing on the SD card started howling and I recorded that and will post that later. Finally, all of the javelinas left and I thought nothing would come in but about ten minutes later I looked to my right and could see a hog coming out of the pasture to the corn. He was very skittish and would come in and eat one or two bites and then run off but not very far. My heart was pounding like always and I finally got ready with my rifle, safety off, earplugs in, looking through my scope. There he came, just into sight and I dropped him in his tracks. Big old ugly, hairy hog. #17 for the year, 187 total.

My congratulations to Kareen "Hog Queen" again for killing all those nasty hogs in the great state of Texas!

A Mississippi Monster Delta Buck

This is Scott Turner's Mississippi delta buck. A biologist scored him 183-3/8. What an awesome buck in our great Mississippi outdoors. My congratulations to Scott on a magnificent buck! A buck of a lifetime!

A Muscular Michigan Buck

My Facebook friend, Mike Persichini (Deer Whisperer), said that heavy rains yesterday and cool weather this morning had the deer going crazy.  It looked like they were all doing barrel races.  Awesome morning!  He covered 2 football fields in seconds.  Thanks so much for sharing your incredible pictures of deer in our great wild Michigan outdoors, Mike! 

Happy 51st Birthday Debra Ann!

I’m wishing my daughter, Debra Ann a very Happy 51st Birthday today. Debra is the mother of two sons, with one son in the Air Force serving our country, and a daughter that has given her two grandsons. She works as a nanny for two doctors taking care of their young daughter. She is a hard-working mother and I’m so proud of her accomplishments in life. I love her so much and hope her birthday will be a very happy one! xoxo

Remembering My Son, William David Boyd

October 25th and 26th of every year since 1964 have been sad days remembering my only son, William David Boyd. I was able to hold him briefly, then he was placed in an incubator, and baptized the next day. He would have been 56 years old but God called him home to be with him. He was diagnosed with hyaline membrane disease of the lungs and weighed 6 lbs. 2 oz. He was born before my oldest daughter, Theresa, was a year old on November 11th. When I’m called home, I will see my son and hold him again. Happy “Heavenly” Birthday, William David. I love and miss you so much! Mom

Hog Queen's #186

My Facebook friend, Kareen from Alpine, TX, did it again.  She got hog #186 last night and I wanted to share her harvest with you in her own words.  

SD card showed a hog coming in at 10:15 p.m. so I was sitting out by 8:58 p.m. Nothing but javelina and some coons showed up but all of a sudden the coons ran off and in came the three small hogs I have seen since they were born. They will come in and about 10 to 15 minutes later Mama will come in like she is sending them in to make sure it is safe. I thought about waiting but do you think I could do that? Hell no! I took a lung shot on one and he dropped and just laid there and then all of a sudden he got up and ran off! I got out of my blind and could see where he was bleeding where he had laid down and saw the blood trail and he wasn't any more than 20 yards from there so that makes number 16 for the year and 186 total, Yay!

My congratulations again, Hog Queen! So proud of you for killing all those nasty ole hogs in our great Texas outdoors.

Ribcage

I went down to the Vicksburg waterfront yesterday afternoon and took this pretty picture of the sunset as fishermen were in the Yazoo Diversion Canal enjoying the end of a beautiful day. MS River Level: 9.32 Feet - Change: -0.35 foot - Flood Stage: 43 Feet

 

Hog Queen's #185

My Facebook friend, Kareen from Alpine, TX, did it again.  She got hog #185 three days ago and I wanted to share her harvest with you in her own words.  

I was out by 10:00 p.m. as the SD card showed a sounder showing up by 10:23 p.m. Nothing came in but coons and a lone mule deer doe. I was about to give up but all of a sudden the coons and deer ran off and a sounder came in. There were no big ones and at one point they spooked and ran off but came right back in. That was when I made the decision to shoot one of them and I did just that. A medium-sized boar which makes 185 total and fifteen for the year. Yay for me!

Again, my congratulations to Kareen, The Hog Queen, on a job well done in our great wild Texas outdoors!  Way to go girlfriend!

My Facebook friend, Mike Persichini of Michigan is called the "deer whisperer" and you can see why.  It is amazing how close he can get to the deer taking photographs and feeding them.  They trust him.

Cory's Monster PA Buck!

Cody says - This picture speaks more than Cory could ever describe at this moment. Taken when we first got up to the buck, and definitely my favorite picture. Built-up years of emotion coming out in this picture. No one works harder, is more persistent, and puts more time in than my brother does for these big public-land whitetails. I owe anything I know to him and my father. Yesterday was Cory's day! Congratulations!  

I would like to take a moment to personally thank the many that have reached out to me and congratulate me on the last few days. It has been certainly overwhelming, to say the least, and I thank every one of you for reaching out to me. I spent nearly all day yesterday trying to return texts and phone calls and simply have not had time to sit down and publicly thank everyone. I am not a social media person and I don’t spend much time on it. Needless to say, there are no words to describe the last few days. It has been 100 blessings and I still cannot believe I was given an opportunity at the old buck. Those that know me to know that I spend a great deal of time scouting, shed hunting, and searching for old bucks in mountainous regions here in Pennsylvania. It’s something that’s been a part of my life for quite a few years now. The area I live in Northern PA contains literally 1000’s of acres of public land and those that live here, including me, are blessed to have all these beautiful mountainous public land regions to explore. It is basically a “playground” for anyone interested in spending the time and energy to explore it. In all those years and in all the many old bucks I’ve come to know, I’ve never ever come across one of this caliber. He is truly a one in a million specimen and just having the opportunity to hunt him was an honor, let alone take his life. My buddy and I have been after this buck for 3 years now and I will share all details at a later time. Up until this past week, he was a complete ghost, moving only at night according to trail camera photos. I also have 2 years-worth of sheds from him. For whatever reason this past week, he decided to “let his guard down”, and that was his biggest mistake. I got several daytime evening photos of the buck feeding on acorns. I typically don’t hunt these old bucks early season as all my past success has come during the “rut” phases, but I decided I needed to hunt him. Like I said I will share all details of the hunt at a later time. The moments leading up to the shot were BY FAR the most intense moments of my life. There is absolutely nothing and I mean nothing that can prepare you for those moments. Somehow I held it together. I saw several comments regarding the recurve bow or “traditional” tackle. 8 years ago my life changed for the better when I discovered traditional archery. I cannot express here the joys that traditional archery has provided for me in the last 8 years. It has completely changed my life all for the better. The memories I’ve gained and the people I have met who have the same love for the bow and arrow and the flight of the arrow have enriched my life so greatly. If you are even somewhat interested in shooting a recurve or longbow, I highly encourage you to at least try it as I almost guarantee you will see what you have been missing. I have to thank my Dad who is the best hunter I know for all that he has taught me throughout my life. There is NO WAY any of this would have happened without his guidance throughout the years. I also have to thank my brother for his help over the years and also his help on the recovery of the buck. Having him there to recover the old buck made it even more special. Lastly, I have to thank my wife for all that she puts up with. She sacrifices more than I could ever express here. I’ve left her alone at home way more times than I should have while I attend archery tournaments or spend time in the mountains and never once has she ever complained. And I’d like to mention one last thing here…and that is that I was just the lucky hunter. The old buck is the one who deserves all the attention. I cannot even begin to imagine how these bucks live to the ages of 10 to 12 years old in the heavily hunted areas of Pennsylvania, I don’t think we fully understand what they go through to survive. Surviving the 2-week long rifled season being sought after by high powered rifles and the 6-week long archery season. Not only that but all the other “hardships” they deal with. Four-legged Predators seeking them from the first minute they exist, the cold and long winters they deal with trying to make it through in hopes to see the spring months and also the heat of summer and complete discomfort with 1000s’ of insects constantly pestering them. They are the ones who deserve ALL our respect and admiration for they are indeed one of the most magnificent creatures God has given us. Again, THANK YOU ALL for the wonderful comments the past few days! It certainly has been an unbelievable experience that I will never, ever forget.

One Happy Girl

This young lady just harvested a red stag in Harrison County, Mississippi with an airbow.  She is one happy girl and I am so proud of her.  My congratulations on a job well done in our great wild and wonderful Mississippi outdoors!  Way to go!  

First Deer While Bowhunting

Vicksburg resident Jarrett Smith, 18, shot this doe while bowhunting in Rodney on October 2.  It was the first deer he has taken with a bow and arrow.  He is the son of Regina and Willie Smith.

Hog Queen's #184

My Facebook friend, Kareen a.k.a. "Hog Queen" killed another hog in Alpine, Texas recently. Her kill totals are up one more notch for the year. Here is her hunting story in her own words.

I am back in from sitting out. SD card showed boar coming in at 2:00 a.m. so I decided to sit out until 3:00 a.m. Heard the coyotes yapping and howling and the stars were so pretty. Finally, a little after 1:00 a.m. he was there and very comfortable so I took my time to put my earplugs in and take my safety off my rifle. I keep wanting a lung shot but he just kept presenting me with a perfect headshot so I took it and down he went. 184 in total and 14 for the year! Yay!!

My congratulations to Kareen "Hog Queen" on kill number 184 and number 14 for 2020! Way to go girlfriend!

Mr. Perfect

My Facebook friend Mike Persichini named this buck "Mr. Perfect"  that he took a picture of.  I would say so myself.  Mike lives in Michigan and called the "deer whisperer" taking pictures of deer with trail/video cams in their habitat.  Mike commented that some of his best days are taking pictures in the rain.  We thank you for taking pictures of wildlife for all of us to enjoy in our great wild and wonderful outdoors.  

Tiny Baby Deer Asks People to Rescue Her | The Dodo Wild Hearts

A tiny baby deer walked right up to people, crying for help. When it became clear that she lost her mom, they brought her to Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary in Ontario. Watch her grow up and run back to the wild with her best friend! Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary is a volunteer-based charity and is not government funded, they rely on donations from the public to help wildlife in need. View From Fort Hill In Vicksburg, Mississippi

A view high from Fort Hill in the Vicksburg National Military Park this morning. Fort Hill was the anchor of the left flank of the rear Confederate defense line. It commanded the bend in the river north of our city during the Civil War.

A Kentucky Buck Named "Moose"

Jeremy Huffman of DeMossville, Ky harvested a 200 and 3/8-inch buck with his crossbow on his farm in Morning View, Ky on the evening of Sept. 24.

Buckmasters Whitetail Trophy Records (BTR) scorer Hunter Schmittou measured the beast of a buck and gave Huffman the final tally. At 200+ inches, Huffman’s deer becomes the new Kentucky state record for typical bucks taken with a crossbow.

It took four years for Huffman to finally bag the buck he kept seeing on his cameras.

Going into the 2020 deer season Huffman was determined to end his four-year-long quest after the buck he named “moose”. During that time, the buck was only seen a few times, the majestic giant’s mere existence was confirmed mostly by trail camera throughout Huffman’s pursuit. After countless hours in the stand and a lot of patience, Huffman has finally put a tag on his buck of a lifetime.

“It’s kind of bittersweet,” Huffman said. “I finally got the deer I was after. It’s like what am I going to do now? For the last three years and into this season, that has literally been my life once hunting season comes in. It has always been, let’s go find moose.”

The big buck had a 22-inch spread and weighed 236 pounds on the hoof. A typical 7×6, 13 scorable points.  (Written by Mike Collins)

Pumpkins, Mazes, Hayrides, Bonfires, Oh My

My Granddaughters, Emma and Kate had a great time recently at the Belvedere Plantation that offers pumpkins, mazes, hayrides, and bonfires in Fredericksburg, VA.  Here are some pictures that my daughter, Suzi, and son-in-law Dennis took to share the fun that they had.

My Facebook friend, Kareen Beinhauer is the "Hog Queen" of Alpine, Texas, and trying to get the ONE EYE hog coming in.  She said last night she was out to hopefully kill ONE EYE, but he stood her up again!
