Stories of my hunting experiences with family, friends or whatever else I want to blog about.

A Dixie Lady Deer Hunter

Article by Fred Messina, editor of "On Target Outdoors" from The Vicksburg Evening Post on Friday, January 19, 1990. Photo by Bob Phillips.

Bob Phillips came up the other day with a photo of his wife Marian and a deer she got on Brown's Point New Years Eve. The deer was an 8-point with 16 inches of inside spread that weighed in at 190 pounds. A nice trophy in anyone's book. However, the tale Bob told is that this was Marian's fourth deer this year and he claimed that he would have done better than he did if he had not spent so much time hauling Marian's deer out of the woods. Come off it, Bob. We all know who the hunter was.

MDWFP Hosting CWD Public Meeting In Vicksburg, MS

MDWFP to Host CWD Public Meeting in Vicksburg

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks will host a public meeting to discuss Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) at the Vicksburg Convention Center in Vicksburg on Monday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. Information about CWD will be presented by leading scientists and MDWFP personnel will discuss Mississippi’s CWD Response Plan. Biologists and Law Enforcement officials will be available to answer questions.

On February 9, 2018, the MDWFP was notified that a single sample collected from a white-tailed deer in Issaquena County tested positive for CWD, marking the first time the disease has ever been documented in Mississippi. Upon notification of the positive sample, the MDWFP enacted the CWD Response Plan. The disease is caused by a malformed protein or prion and is known to affect white-tailed deer and other related animals, such as elk, moose, and reindeer. There is no known treatment for CWD, which can only be confirmed through laboratory analysis.
