Teaching His Daughters How To Fish

Steven Albright of Starkville, Mississippi spent the morning recently enjoying a cool cloudy day teaching his cute daughters how to catch a catfish on the Tennesse Tombigbee.  He said that they played hard and fished hard.  Here are some cute pictures he took of his daughters in our great wild Mississippi outdoors!  Making precious memories!

Steven said that this catfish bit off more than it could chew!

My congratulation to these two new Fishermans!

Happy 7th Birthday To Oliver Love

My Great Nephew, Oliver Love had a nice birthday party this past Saturday with a BarB-Que meal with all the trimmings, and ice cream, and cake.  A lot of his friends showed up and his family.  There was a huge waterslide in the backyard with a jumping room.  Oliver is sitting down at the bottom while his friend is flying into the slide.

Oliver opening up his presents with Mom overseeing.

Checking out one of his presents.

I heard he got more money than presents.  Racked up $275.00

Getting ready to hit the pinata!

Oliver the first one up to bat!

Dad and Mom watching over him.

Almost busted the pinata open.

Kids taking turns trying to hit the pinata.  The young boy with the blue towel around him ended up busting it and candy went flying everywhere and kids too!

Time to get down to business, make a wish, and blow out the candles.

I hope his wish comes true.

Oliver trying to eat his ice cream cake that was so hard.

Oliver struggled with it and I told him I love him and he said he loved me too!

Happy 7th Birthday, Oliver!

Why Lee Lakosky Quit his Daytime Job

"Literally October 1st walked into work and quit... I'm just not happy doing that." It's no doubt that Lee Lakosky harvests big deer year after year. But, it all started with a dream, a risk, and a whole bunch of hard work. Here's the story.

A Great Find

Chris Mann of Amory, Mississippi, an outdoor writer for Our Tupelo on Facebook was scouting for deer recently along the Tombigbee River and found this pipe washed up in the sand. After cleaning it up, it has the French flag on one side and the British flag on the other. He was not sure what time period it is from, but think maybe the 16th century? It is made from clay and the bowl is oblong instead of perfectly round indicating hand made. The French flag appears to have been hand-drawn with a stick or something. It was a cool find! Any anthropologists or archaeologists with insight? #MississippiHistory

My congratulations to Chris on a great find in our historic and wonderful Missississippi outdoors!

Running Loose

John Scarborough of Richton, Mississippi took out this guy with a pellet gun while running loose around the hunting camp.  This was a non-poisonouse water rat and now the hunters at the camp feel like their lives are over with because of John's kill.  I do wonder if they will have it mounted.  Congratulations to John on a job well done in our great Mississippi indoors!

Twelve Hogs and Counting For Kareen

My Facebook friend, Kareen Beinhauer who just shot Hog #182 and 12th for the year so far.  Here is her story in her own words from the Hog Queen herself of Alpine, Texas!

I'm back in from sitting out and I figured I wouldn’t see anything. The usual javelinas came in but all of a sudden they ran off. A few seconds later a boar wandered in so I slowly put my earplugs in and took my safety off. I thought about taking a lung shot but he offered me a perfect headshot which I took and he went down. 182 total, 12th for the year which I didn't think I would even get to, Yay!

I went to drag that hog off and took my measuring tape with me because on a hog hunting page somebody posted a picture of a chart. You measure the hog right behind the front legs and run your tape around the hog. The measurement will tell you how much they weigh within ten pounds. Before I measured I guessed he weighed about 250 and sure enough, he measured 45 inches which is 250. What a handy thing to have and now I will know how much they weigh without Roy having to bring the backhoe over.

My congratulation to the Kareen on her 12th hog for the year with a total of 182 in our great wild and wonderful Texas outdoors! I'm so proud of you!

Apple Snails Are One Of the World's Worst Invaders!

Stephanie and Kenric Ladner of Hancock County, Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, young son is holding an apple snail and said in the 39 years they had never found a snail this big in the freshwater of the Jourdan River and found two of them.

One had eggs recently.  Apple snails are opportunistic feeders that consume a variety of aquatic vegetation, fruits, and vegetable, algae, remains of a decaying organism, and other snail eggs.  Because of damage to crops, the channeled apple snails are listed as one of the world's worst invaders.

There are millions of them in the Louisiana swamps and in south Florida.  Kill everyone you can and the only way to do that is to scrap the eggs into water and they will die.  This is another non-native that should be reported and/or destroyed.

Keeping The Legacy Going

Seth Cook of Tupelo, Mississippi said his Remington 1100 did the trick Sunday morning.  His great grandfather left him this shotgun when he died 23 years ago.  It has killed many birds while he owned it.  Now it's his turn to keep the legacy going.  One day he will pass it on to his son.  He calls this bad boy, Odis!

My congratulations to Seth on a job well done during our MS dove season and I'm sure his great grandfather would be so proud.

"MASSIVE 700 lb HOG" Awesome Bow Shot!

I took this massive boar with my Hoyt Carbon Spyder 30. It weighed in at 725 pounds! It obviously had not been feral for very long, but it was very difficult to track and sneak upon. It fed quite a few families in need as well! My goal is always to put an animal down as quickly as possible, and not have it suffer needlessly.

AMAZING HEAD SHOT: Texas Hog Bowhunt

Have you ever wondered what to do if a wounded hog is about to charge and all you have is a bow? Should you take a headshot? Check it out!

I killed a 180lb. sow while it was eating in an open field. I was in a deer stand called the Taj Mahal and was deer hunting when I turned around and saw about 12-15 hogs. There were three big hogs and I put my .270 on her head while eating and dropped her in her tracks and put another round in and shot another hog running. It was an awesome hunt at the famous Christmas Place Plantation and Hunting Club in the MS Delta that I will never forget. Brought it home and had it processed and ate off of it for a year. Nothing like hunting in our great wild Mississippi outdoors!

Throwback Thursday - First 8-Point Buck!

My very first 8-point buck taken on New Year's Eve '89 at Brown's Point Hunting and Fishing Club on Kings Point Island, located north of Vicksburg, MS. It weighed 190lbs. I have it mounted and hanging on my wall. A very proud deer hunter in our wild and wonderful Mississippi outdoors!

Very First Alligator Hunt @ Christmas Place Hunting Club

This is the very first alligator hunt at the famous Christmas Place Plantation Hunting Club on the edge of the MS Delta where I hunt every year.  Berney Howell organized it and they caught two.  My hunting buddy Rex Howell of Deer Camp Blog sent me these two pictures of the alligators.   The camp has a 40-acre lake on 2,500 acres of hunting land. My congratulations to all the guys at the camp on a successful hunt in our great wild and wonderful Mississippi outdoors.

Berney Howell is on far-right and I don't know the other hunters.

A 13-Foot, 8-inch Alligator Taken @ Reservoir

After a two-hour fight, Hunter Fielder, from left, Michael Fielder, Josh Grubbs, Ricky Martin, Jake Harris, Clint Hill, Ashley Harris, Raye Harris, and Casey Martin show off the 13-foot, 8-inch alligator they caught on Ross Barnett Reservoir.
After a 2-hour fight, Hunter Fiedler from left, Michael Fielder, Josh Grubbs, Ricky Martin, Jake Harris, Clint Hill, Ashley Harris, Raye Harris, and Casey Martin.

Mississippi's alligator season opened Friday and it didn't take long for one group of hunters to get tangled up with a gator on the Ross Barnett Reservoir.

"He was 300 yards away and when the light hit him, he went down," said Ashley Harris of Canton. "All we saw was eyes for about three seconds. That's the only way we knew he was there."

Ashley and his crew drove their boats to where they saw the alligator and used side-imaging electronics to locate him. On one pass the gator was suspended. On the next pass, he was resting on the bottom. The group marked the spot on a GPS and then pulled out rods and reels.

I made a couple of blind casts and got a hook on him," Harris said. "The

the only way I could tell it wasn't a log is as soon as I hooked him he

went about 10 feet and slid off into some deep water.

"We got three more hooks in him. All these poles have a 150-pound line on

them and 20 pounds of drag. It's heavy stuff."

Harris, speaking Saturday after only a few hours of sleep, said time was

somewhat of a blur, but after about an hour of fighting the alligator, he

finally tired enough that they were able to pull him to the surface and get a

look at him.

A massive alligator

"We didn't know he was that big, but we knew he was a pretty good one

when we saw him on the fish-finder," said Michael Fielder of Brandon.

"When you see one on there you know it's a pretty decent size. When we

saw him we knew he was pretty large."

They also knew he was strong.

"We were worn out," Fielder said. "We couldn't budge him off the bottom.

"We had four lines trying to get him off the bottom and he wouldn't move.

It was like pulling a log off the bottom. Every once in a while he'd take a

couple of steps, but other than that, he wouldn't move."

The gator was tired enough to come to the surface, but he wasn't close to

giving up. Fielder place another line on the gator with a crossbow and the

gator started dragging the boat.

The fight wasn't over

"He took off and took us through some trees a storm blew down,"

Harris said.

"He had us all tangled up, but we had two boats.

"I got in the other boat and got another line on him. When I got the

other lines on him he really didn't go anywhere because he had so many

lines on him and was so tangled up."

After two hours of battling the big alligator, the hunting party was able to

secure him with two snares; however, he was so tangled in lines and limbs,

they couldn't get him into open water with their trolling motor.

"We had to crank up the 70-horse motor to pull him out," Harris said.

The alligator was dispatched and when they got him in the boat,

they realized what they had.

"We measured him at 13 feet, 9 inches on the boat, but when we stretched

him out he was 13 feet, 8 inches," Harris said. "I'm going to weigh him

sometime this week when I get scales.

"I think this is the biggest one to come out of the reservoir itself. He's

going to go 600, maybe 700 pounds."

Off to a good start?

Ricky Flynt, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Park's

The Alligator Program coordinator, said conditions varied on an opening

day, but a good number of large alligators were harvested.

"It's just hard to tell," Flynt said. "I'm going off social media posts.

"I'm going off other officers. The conditions were pretty good. Everybody

was seeing gators."

However, Flynt said hunters in the Delta may have experienced a setback.

"At least in the Delta, ramps are an issue," Flynt said. "The water is so low

and the ramps are silted in. It's probably concentrating hunters where they

have access. On social media, it still looks like some very nice gators were

taken last night."

Four MS Men Charged With Illegally Hunting Turkeys

Kenneth Britt of Wesson, Tony Smith of Wesson, Barney Bairfield of Brookhaven and Dustin Treadway of Brookhaven, face federal charges after investigators say they traveled across the country and illegally hunted turkeys.

The four are accused of traveling to Kansas and Nebraska--states where they were not licensed to hunt--and leaving trophy spurs and beards of over 25 wild turkeys.

The legal limit for killing turkeys in Kansas is two per person.

It is against federal laws to transport wildlife across state lines if killed against state law.

Britt also faces a felony of lying to a federal law enforcement officer, while Smith is accused of killing red-shouldered hawks, which is a violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

if guilty, Britt faces a total of seven years in prison and a $450,000 fine. Smith faces two and a half years in prison and a $215,000 fine. Bairfield faces three years in prison and a $300,000 fine, and Treadway faces a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

The fine sportsmen and women of this state can rest assured that, nationwide, conservation enforcement agencies, along with Agents of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will continue working together to stop the thievery and abuse of our valuable natural resources,” Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks Colonel Steve Adcock said.

Flowers For Paw Paw & Visiting Son's Gravesite

Yesterday, two of my four daughters, Theresa (Teri), Debra (Debi), and William David (Will) came to Vicksburg to put flowers on their Dad's grave.  He died on March 18, 2020.  While there we went by my son's grave to take Will by his namesake Great Uncle's gravesite.  Here are a few photos that were taken while there.

Little Will in Debi's lap, her first grandson.  Noah James was with his Mom, Lucy, and did not come.  Will and Noah are only a year and day apart in age.

My Great Grandson Will found a small cornerstone to sit on while we were there and was in deep concentration.

I'm sure this is all new to him and does not understand what is going on at a very young age.

Will at his Paw Paw's grave.   With the ground so hard and the wind blowing, we had to put the flowers up against the tombstone that was recently laid.

May you Rest in Peace, Jesse Aaron Boyd, Jr., born August 21, 1933, and died March 18, 2020.

A Whole Loaf Of Bread

My Facebook friend, Mike Persichini took these adorable pictures of Mom teaching one of her triplet bucks that the guy (Mike) throwing out peanut butter and bread is a good guy.

Someone commented, no jelly with the peanut butter and Mike replied that he did not want to spoil them.

It's too late for that!

Cutest thing I have ever seen!

Have to take time to rest after eating a whole loaf of bread in our great wild and wonderful Michigan outdoors!  Thanks so much, Mike for sharing.  A very uplifting picture of deer during these crazy times!
